hereforcomments··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
Hi Chris, I absolutely love it! This a https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/005/574/tak... moment.

The functionality is great, do some clean up and it will be an amazing product. E.g. instead of pressing start and stop, user could hold space while speaking.

hereforcomments··on Look ma, no React: I recoded my portfolio site with vanilla everything
I've just joined a team recently and had a chat with the head of product. We will work on a tiny internal app, it has 3 pages: sso login page, Excel template upload page where earlier uploaded templates are shown as a card and if you click on them it opens a dashboard: a map with markers, a bar and a pie chart. This is the whole thing.

This guy asked what we will use in the front-end. I said react and he was like "amazing, good job, it will be great" and the talked about we should always use react. So yes, there are places where react is used without question.

Also, we will use snowflake as a backend while indexing would make everything a lot faster and the budiness logic is done by 800+ line sql (stored procedure).

hereforcomments··on A mathematically correct way to tie your shoes
I love it! In 2011 I got fed up as I had to tie my shoes multiple times a day. So I did an onlie research and learnt that practically for twenty-x years I used to knot the granny knot. I also learnt to tie my shoe like this https://youtu.be/wMuNjnNyaiA
hereforcomments··on Harvard’s new computer science teacher is a chatbot
Exactly! Like most top universities. And especially MBAs. I wish I knew it earlier and made better use of it.
hereforcomments··on Estimation isn’t for everyone
I'm a self-taught developer at global market leader company. I worked on the business side for years and built quite a few internal apps end-to-end completely alone. I had no choice but to follow good practice to maintain them alone.

I was quite reluctant to join the dev team, it never had a good reputation, but eventually decided to give it a go. Agile and estimations, spill overs, etc is such a pain in the ass, it feels like a pseudo-science. A lot of people spend a lot of energy on just this administration while we are way behind on many other things, like proper unit testing, good quality documentation, well established CI/CD. And everybody is focusing so much on the estimates, tickets like this was the end goal. I want to change their approach but there's a long way to go.

hereforcomments··on Ask HN: Those with success using GPT-4 for programming – what are you doing?
When I finish writing a method, function or larger chunk of code that works well but could be simplified or optimized, I ask it do it and it's surprisingly good at it.

Sometimes I ask it to write complete classes for me. My longest prompt was full page long and it wrote a county-city autocomplete from a database: the back end in Go, the front end in plain vanilla JS with a non-jQuery based lightweight library (I asked it).

hereforcomments··on A guidance language for controlling LLMs
Facebook's "leaked" LLM.
hereforcomments··on Effect of LSD on reinforcement learning in humans (2022)
"My whole mouth went numb" This is a very strong indication for taking NBOME instead of LSD. From the article: "Looking back, I'm pretty certain that what I tried was not LSD." LSD would never numb your mouth. Just Google "LSD mouht numb reddit". Also, there's no lethal does of LSD, NBOM can easily kill you or screw you up just like in the article.

Everyone should always test thier substances before taking them to prevent these stories.

So do not fear LSD, fear NBOME.

hereforcomments··on Voila – From notebooks to standalone web applications and dashboards
Just use Google Colab. It's completely free. I used to teach 300 people on it while sharing my notebook with them and live streaming my sessions.
