herdrick··on When buying the dip doesn’t work: An analysis of the dot-com crash

  - Cement is extremely perishable.
  - Contruction projects need cement at very precise times.
  - When that precise time will occur is hard to predict -- construction projects have a lot of delays.
  - In a city there are a lot of construction projects at any given time.
So using software to coordinate cement mixing and delivery has a lot of potential to reduce waste -- or that is, it did back in the dot-com boom when CEMEX started working on that. If you heard about that back then, you were hearing about something with a lot of promise! From what I remember it worked out really well.

herdrick··on Ask HN: How do you organize your knowledge?
Everything starts in my emacs scratch buffer (the default file opened upon startup), which is an org-mode file, and when some category of stuff gets big I move it into its own file in Dropbox. The content is just links and written-out thoughts and questions.

Welding tanks are different, and not in shortage.
herdrick··on LA: Ambulance crews to not transport patients with little chance of survival
You would carry it into patients' rooms and ambulances in tanks.

I can't believe they're rationing oxygen. I administered welding oxygen to my girlfriend every day for about 6 weeks when she had Covid. It's cheap, easy, and perfectly safe.

I assumed that when things got bad someone would just suspend the regulation requiring medical certified oxygen.

The parent comment is right. It's not just the spark; heat and pressure are also part of what ignites your air/fuel mixture.

How is the 'write a byte to disk' loop faster than the empty loop? Maybe xrange() is dominating in the empty loop example.

herdrick··on NHL suspending play immediately due to virus
Yeah, it would need to be combined with a (long overdue) closing of all bars.
herdrick··on NHL suspending play immediately due to virus
True. Public health emergencies are about making hard choices.
herdrick··on NHL suspending play immediately due to virus
It's great to cancel the in-person fan experience, but it's bad that they're cancelling the games. The more things we have to keep people at home watching TV, the better.

In fact I think emergency 'friendly' off-season college football and NFL scrimmages should be organized. (Other off-season sports too.) The increased spread caused by a few healthy young people getting the virus from each other would be more than outweighed by keeping sports fans at home.

herdrick··on How Pandemics Change History
If we don't reduce the current 'doubling every 7 days' growth rate, then at the end of the epidemic most of them will.
herdrick··on GNU Recutils

your database is a human-readable text file that you can grep/awk/sed freely, and a line-oriented structure makes it perfect for version control systems.
But in fact it's not great for grep/awk/sed/, etc. For those tools to work well, you'll find you need to keep each record on its own line.
