herbst··on 13 Months Sober (2025)
I am "sober" no idea for how long. Alcohol never was important or a regular thing for me, stopping to use it was just a natural extension from getting an adult
herbst··on CAPTCHAs don't prove you're human – they prove you're American (2017)
No idea why you got downvoted. This is one of the most absurd and controlling thing the US does from the Perspektive of a non US person.
herbst··on CAPTCHAs don't prove you're human – they prove you're American (2017)
To be fair liberal and conservative is still used in it's actual sense whenever I hear it here in central Europe. US politics is barely a topic, even less something people actually care about.
herbst··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
I totally see the use case. I just think it's a book I wouldn't want to open when my aim is to keep the software rational and sane.
herbst··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Germany had it's Bundeswehr the whole time since it joined the Nato 1955 same year the US occupation officially ended. And there are not even remotely 200k us Troops in Germany anymore.

No idea where you get your Infos from, bit a short googling would show that this is simply not true.

herbst··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
Did you? Isn't the whole point of of excel to just make a new sheet if you have a another form of data structure?
herbst··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
Same thoughts here. The comments in here make it sounds like a good idea. But isn't the whole idea behind excel (and any spreadsheet really) to have all data flat into sheets. For me the idea alone seems to break the whole concept
herbst··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
I mean spreadsheets are amazing, but excel is still a shitty piece of software (in my books)

I really don't need a tablet at all when all the software I have on my Linux laptop is arguebly not worse and definitely more stable. That's the moral I have taken.

I still like my iPad. The pen is amazing, and the sound is so good I use it as TV without extra speakers in my caravan. but I usually don't recommend it to anyone. Especially no one that has any form of fixed budget.

I would probably just get a cheap old one if I had known that I won't use most music/3d software on it anyway. I wouldn't have spent so much extra for the big hard drive, etc.

I never been to a "faded old restaurant" that was actually good and not only the same shitty frozen food every other cheap Chinese place offers.

Good places around here usually do actually care about presentation. None of these kebap/pizza places is particularly good either, it's the mass production places with average to bad ratings.

Other people already answered the non US reason. However I fell for this. I got myself an expensive iPad because I assumed it's actually like all the apple users are saying.

However, a lot of apps are unstable. Support is horrible to non existent for some. No refunds even when the app doesn't work at all directly after install. Most professional apps have a buy price AND a subscription price at this point. Most actually working apps are not apple exclusive these days.

It's definitely not as green over there as some apple people make it out to be.

Windows also is unnecessary complicated for a singular install but works kinda well for a network and central administration by someone who likes to read the docs (or whatever you read for windows)

Sounds like a good replacement

Can you name examples how the EU or Germany is US addicted? From my POV in central Europe this has changed long long long ago.

Doing some trading with a shitty country doesn't imply any dependency

herbst··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
I agree 100% but you need to do more than 2 sentences put into Chatgpt and send the result to your print shop
herbst··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
I don't mind AI art, generally.

However. The amount of pizza/kebap places that did an AI redesign of their shop AND MENU is crazy. The amount of cars that advertise small businesses using basically Disney style straight out of an AI. Like nearly every local event is basically just "Chatgpt make me flyer" with factual errors in the texts, even the in my local hospital that's what info flyers look like ...

And seriously. Didn't they look at there kebap? It looks nether apetizing nor like a kebab, why would they print that oversized and glue it on their business? Something very real they build over years with hard work.

It's like individuality is dying in front of our eyes

I got some hate from pointing out WhatsApp is the same evil corp as Facebook recently. People don't want to hear that
herbst··on Show HN: How long do I need to work at my salary before I can coast, or retire?
I have been in the lucky situation where very little work was more than enough.

You start to do things just because you can. I did wood work, house renovation, gardening, rebuild a motorcycle, a caravan and later a car. Started to DJ, music production got into 3d printing and engineering, ...

Not working on the car after work for months or years. But turning my life upside down and do nothing else for 1 month.

I love doing things in weekdays instead of weekends.

At this point I can't even start to comprehend how people can do anything for them next to a 40 hour week job.

herbst··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
This so much. I am still confused how well tabex works and how few people know about it.

Combine with a dopamine booster for the first weeks (or masturbate a lot) and quitting suddenly feels easy.

I bought it online but directly from a Polish or Slovakian pharmacy.

herbst··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Tabex (laburnum extract), something to boost dopamin for the first weeks and probably the actual will to do so. Quitting was actually easy that way.
herbst··on GitHub is having trouble counting things
Soon most will have forgotten how essential and stable github was at some point in the past.
herbst··on Show HN: SeasonMap – when to travel where? visualized with climate data
I spent many many many hours researching these numbers again and again the last winter seasons. Generally I think it's really useful and I saved it for the the next months.

However I would heavily suggest working on the design so it doesn't shout being AI generated so instantly. If you haven't said you spent hours debugging it I would have instantly closed it because I wouldn't have guessed it works actually this well.

herbst··on One Phone. One Computer
I mean you can do that with any android and a installed Linux distro. It was also more or less the exact vision of the Ubuntu phone but people didn't care a lot.
herbst··on Maintainer rejected AI contributions, we forked it and added video acceleration
The comments on twitter are weird as well ..

I mean the real issue I see is as maintainer I wouldn't want to open the door to that because I don't want to read through thousands of lines of AI generated code in future just to seed out the good one.

herbst··on Can we stop with the uptime percentages?
Fast is future. Slow is ded. We are fast now
herbst··on Ask HN: AI Panic, you buying it?
From my perspective it looks like working to deep in AI makes you crazy. No other way to explain all the weird bullshit these billionaires throw around.

Sure AI sucks, but not to that degree (yet)

herbst··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
Even that only makes sense if endless consumption is a given good thing.

If I need something I usually have a need first, then I research then I buy. It's never the thing in the ads in between that turns out to be best.

herbst··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
I am sure you aren't wrong. But in the exact 2 cities I was thinking about the non roundabout one definitely has the "better" public transit and definitely more people using it daily. (Salzburg AT Vs Thun CH)

Thun has just a really good street system and city layout generally I guess.

herbst··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
I mean sure I also hate that as a biker, however it's the one thing that keeps my mind from drifting off so I guess it's necessary.
herbst··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
In fact it's illegal to take more than 3 rounds in Switzerland.

If you have weapons and a child. And you have that child unsupervised do their own thing with theoretical access to your weapons. Would we call it "child going rouge" if it decides to play with the weapons and shoot someone?
