henriquemaia··on Evidence that fish have feelings
I'm currently reading it and I reiterate the suggestion. It is very compelling. Plus it is very well written, which makes reading it a very pleasant experience.
henriquemaia··on The Bicycle: Growing Popularity of the New Vehicle (1874) [pdf]
I ride 30km per day back and forth from home to college. I'm 43, I ride an old steel bike (ca. 20kg). I do this out of necessity, since it's the cheapest and most convenient way to travel around the city I live [1]; but I also do it out of love for the joy it provides me. Granted that the city's overall elevation helps a lot (it's almost plain here, but many people still think I'm crazy for this choice of transportation).

As others have pointed out, weather is only a bummer when you're not properly clothed (I'm over-generalizing here, but you get the picture). It also helps to live on a place where the average temperature never goes down below 24ºC [2]. On the down side, it rains a lot here. When I say a lot, a do mean a lot.

Bicycles are fun. I couldn't imagine myself living without one.

If critical mass is what you need to github it, please do. I am also interested.

Thanks!

henriquemaia··on A Simulation in Emoji
Thanks for the suggestion. It also works on Arch Linux.

henriquemaia··on English has been my pain for 15 years (2013)
If you use Chromium (or Google Chrome), you can use this extension. It has helped me greatly with my pronunciation.

henriquemaia··on The Triumph of Stupidity (1933)
Written in 1933. In the same year, Heidegger joined the Nazi party.

Now go figure who was the most prescient of the two.

henriquemaia··on Coming soon: chicken meat without slaughter
> And precisely what is the sustainability of lab meat? What makes you think lab meat will be more efficient that raised meat?

Yuval Noah Harari, on the second video (ca. 0:40) states the reasons why he thinks cultured meat will have a smaller ecological footprint. He says: "When you don't have to raise an entire cow in order to get a steak, when you don't have to raise an entire chicken to get a schnitzel, you just need this particular piece of meat, these particular cells, it reduces considerably the amount of water, the amount of fuel, the amount of nutrients that you have to invest in it, and also the amount of pollution that you are creating."

henriquemaia··on The International Flag of Planet Earth
I concur. When I see some spacecraft bearing the flag of one particular country, I feel something is missing, for I myself also feel part of quest for a greater understanding of our boundaries with outer space. A flag of the earth would create that sense of unity you referred to.

Or it is _news_, but in a 19th century pre-telegraph kind of way.

henriquemaia··on Aboriginal storytelling accurately records sea level rises 7,000 years ago
Since we are land animals, a lowering of the sea would provide more grounds to be covered by humans; more space means less interaction and less conflict.

Maybe the sense of wonderment in finding new grounds is not enough to be folk-told throughout generations. As in the news, we tend to stick to the bad news rather than the good ones.

henriquemaia··on Breaking the communication barrier between dolphins and humans
"They’re a kind of alien intelligence sharing our planet—watching them may be the closest we’ll come to encountering ET."

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.

henriquemaia··on Dear Dad, Send Money – Letters from Students in the Middle Ages
"The city is expensive and makes many demands; I have to rent lodgings, buy necessaries, and provide for many other things which I cannot now specify."

The list of bars and parties a student has to attend before graduating grows too long to be put on a letter.

henriquemaia··on A Crisis at the Edge of Physics
Thanks for sharing your article on this matter. It's very enlightening.
henriquemaia··on In College and Hiding from Scary Ideas
I think the article's author, with that very detailed description, intended precisely to stress the huge gap between both attitudes in conflict: the child's mentality of those defending the need of a safe space on the one hand and the grown-up mentality of those organizing the debate on the other.
henriquemaia··on Universal copy/paste in Linux
I have used Parcellite in the past, but recently I've found copyq, a much more complete clipboard manager. But, as you said, if it not for the clipboard manager, I would certainly embrace the solution posted here.
henriquemaia··on Human DNA enlarges mouse brains
It may sound weird to some, but this is the first time I learned about those characters. I wanted to point this out in oder to stress the usefulness of the comment I am replying to.
henriquemaia··on Do the English Use More Words Than the French?
I have the same experience in Portuguese (my native language). Romance languages tend to be more verbose (also anecdotal personal evidence). But, in a way, my feeling is that modern English has substantially more words than Portuguese – which, I suppose, makes sense. English is under a much greater creative pressure due to its wider audience (English as a global language).

Using your example sentence (armchair laboratory):

[0] É quase sempre mais curto em inglês do que em português. [1] It's almost always shorter in English than in Portuguese.

11 vs. 9 words.
