henrikgs··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
Well the arguments are many, and the counter-arguments also many. The point of my comment was not say that the (typically European) system is better, but it's not like described as parent commenter where you cannot fire people and are stuck with too much staff. That is not the case. I wasn't really arguing for it being better for the company and/or society.

Relevant skill could be proper cause. You can absolutely fire someone for not having the skills you need and hire someone else with the right skillset.

henrikgs··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
That's not how it works at all. Of course you can fire someone with proper cause, you just can't fire someone __at will__. Lack of demand for the position is proper cause. If you don't need staff you can fire them, but you cannot fire someone and hire someone else in the same position.
henrikgs··on JupyterLab 4.0
I'm guessing the las one should link here https://rise.readthedocs.io/en/stable/ and not to voila two times?
henrikgs··on Thoughts on the Late 2016 MacBook Pro
It should be both

henrikgs··on Achieving Hunter-Gatherer Fitness in the 21st Century: Back to the Future (2010)
Well yeah.. "of course" would I say. Doesn't "everybody"? You have to assume something when you write a paper or debate. It would be pretty tedious and difficult if you have to debate every basic existential questions every time you write or say something. It seriously dampens the progress.
henrikgs··on Thinking, Fast and Slow (2011)
It's bold in a sense that most economic models regarding consumers as rational actors becomes irrelevant or plain wrong. Everyone knows it is a simplification and only partly true, but claiming its dead wrong really often was quite bold.
henrikgs··on MIT indefinitely removes online physics lectures and courses by Walter Lewin
Anyone seen both Lewin and Susskind[0] got any thoughts on the differences? I was thinking about starting on one of these.

henrikgs··on A Few Questions About the Culture: An Interview with Iain Banks
That seems overly simplistic. Sometimes it's easier to get motivated if you have already seen the results or what the taxes/regulations can do. It's much easier to be motivated to pay taxes for public health care when you have seen it first hand, and not just listened to a politicans pipe dream.
henrikgs··on Antares rocket explosion: The question of using decades-old Soviet engines
Not the rocket, the engines. And yes, they are decades old. The project that produced the NK-33 engines was abandoned i Soviet in 1974, so they are at least 40 years old. Aerojet bought a stockpile of them in the 90's.
henrikgs··on Rental America: Why the poor pay $4,150 for a $1,500 sofa
Except it probably does. There are a lot of research suggesting that being poor is stressful and mentally draining, rendering you more likely to make poor decisions.
henrikgs··on Mac App Store: The Subtle Exodus
No, they changed it from 15 minutes to two hours.
henrikgs··on Vint Cerf on Colbert
Anyone got a link for outside of US? Or do I need proxy/VPN to see this?

Edit: Found it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ann2q4VPiF8

henrikgs··on Raspberry Pi – a rapturous reception
2 year anniversary today
henrikgs··on Ubuntu Edge price dropped to $695
$830 with a limited $600 early bird option. Later they added several tiers ranging from $625 to $820 with limited slots in each. I think $625 and $675 sold out.
henrikgs··on Here's the Most Idiotic and Brilliant App Ever
Actually, Sergey Brin made the same app and showed it at the Android G1 launch :)

henrikgs··on A Most Peculiar Test Drive
Tesla has a showroom and service center in Norway, and I believe there are 2 importers. Official Tesla and an independent importer.

Part of the popularity is price. Cars in Norway are heavily and progressively taxed on CO2 emission, horse powers and weight. This makes big strong cars extremely expensive, but normal cars are also relatively high taxed. EV's are exempted all those taxes, not just the one on CO2 emission.

Some base prices: Tesla model S 85kWH: 106 250,- USD

Mercedes Benz E 300 4MATIC (252 horsepower): 138 178,- USD

If you want something with similar horsepower:

Mercedes Benz E 500 4M (408 hp) 225 339,- USD

Audi S6 (414 hp): 236 910,- USD

(1USD to 5.6NOK conversion)

I think outfitting an Audi S6 or MB E class from base to acceptable level of accessories would be much more expensive than with the Tesla Model S

Also, electric cars can use the bus line and skip traffic where available

The volume slider on the BBC player goes to 11. Brilliant.
henrikgs··on Dropbox – A nebulous future
Aerofs is something like that https://www.aerofs.com/

It is a really nice product, somehow I keep falling back on Dropbox in actual use though.

henrikgs··on It will take a 'baby elephant' to knock over this bike [video]
The video says it has 2 where one of them is for redundancy, but still....
henrikgs··on Norway is building thorium reactor
According to an article in a norwegian newspaper[1], there are much bigger challenges in extracting the thorium from the ore in Norway. The thorium in India is supposedly easier utilize.

The technology today requires use of a lot of nasty chemicals to extract thorium. I think this is a big issue for the government in addition to running nuclear reactors.

henrikgs··on There’s a Lift for that
Top review on iTunes is a 5 star praise from Evan Williams. It has a clear disclaimer at the top, but I can't decide if I think it's cool or cheesy for a well known investor to do that.
henrikgs··on SpaceX test firing the Falcon 9
Looks like it. This is extremely exiting stuff in general but I agree with you on this stream in particular.
henrikgs··on Learning VIM while playing a game
No it's not over, use what you learned from her to advance in the game
henrikgs··on Writing and Speaking
pg strike me as a good speaker. Yes the "uhm" thing was a bit too much on the pycon video, but I think that is easy to get rid of with a little bit of training

"Sometimes I have to pause when I lose my train of thought."

A lot of people state this as a fault in their presentation skills, but is it really? It can be quite powerful and captivating with pauses in an ever streaming chain of talking, and I really don't think the audience mind.

henrikgs··on Mountain Lion: John Gruber's personal briefing
To nitpick, nowhere in that text does it says they got a personal presentation, just that they got their hands on Mountain Lion early
henrikgs··on Norway: an Eden with wifi
Actually Statoil (biggest Norwegian oil company, partly Government own, mentioned in the Bloomberg article above) just found a major oil reserve in the North Sea this autumn. The forecast is 0.9 to 1.5 billion barrels, and is the largest found in the North Sea ever
henrikgs··on Stanford to host more online classes
Copy pasting like a madman here, sorry about that.

From AI class FAQ;

Will the videos be available without enrolling? Yes, however you will not have access to any other features of the course including homeworks, exams, discussion groups, and posts from the professors.

So I guess you're out of luck as far as the web app, quizzez etc. All the videos are on Youtube so they will be available after the class has finished

henrikgs··on Stanford to host more online classes
From The DB class FAQ:

Q: Will the materials still be available after the course is over?

At the very least, all of the materials in the OpenClassroom repository will be available, including videos with embedded quizzes, lecture notes, course materials, software guides, and extensive do-it-yourself exercises with solutions.

henrikgs··on Stanford to host more online classes
For the ongoing courses it will be available, so I guess it will be the same for these also. The thing you miss out on taking them later is the structure of the class with deadlines (very good incentive to really sit down and learn!) and personal letter from the teachers
