So you are the guy that reads Hacker News profiles. Well, for your entertainment: I wrote the software that increased and decreased the brightness of the stars on the set of the fake moon landing in 69 - to make it look more real, you guessed it.

About 10 years later, I was born.

Another 10 years later, you could find me in-front of a SNES. 10 years on, I was studying for my CE diploma as a side-project to Quake 3 and partying. Or both. And finally, yet another 10 years later, I am old.

hendrik-xdest··on Why I'm a Pirate
The concept is a bit different, at the moment. Creating copies of copyrighted material _could_ be possible with scanners, printers, CD and DVD burners ... The fee you pay on those and other devices is rather to pay for illegal copies that are created of copyrighted material you own. Not for creating hardcopies of illegally acquired content.

At least that is what is supposed to do. In reality ... well you might want to learn German for that and read this interesting tidbit about the rights holder association of Germany (GEMA): hxxp://www.musiker-online.de/Newsdetails.newsdetails.0.html?&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=267&tx_ttnews[backPid]=10&cHash=226c5da554

hendrik-xdest··on IPhone 4 in pure CSS3
Interesting. These icons don't work in the latest Firefox but the ones used for the iPhone Demo do.
hendrik-xdest··on Louis C.K's email to his Beacon Theater Show customers
Does anybody else get the feeling there might be some clever marketing agency behind all this?

Louis persona seems so well thought out and is applied in every aspect. I never met the guy but it is astonishing how well he is following his known character in every public appearance.

Maybe he is just a well organized micromanager of himself. But if you think about the slight change of tone from his "Louis C.K." show on to his "Louis" program that brought him all his success. I just can't believe that this is all him on his own.

hendrik-xdest··on Microsoft decides to automatically update Internet Explorer for everyone
There are quite a lot of companies that have applications that rely on IE6. I, personally, know of a few financial institutions that can't update. This might not be necessarily related to their systems not being able to work with a newer version, though. Some office drones are just incapable of doing there job if the color of a button changes. I kid you not.

Other companies have a long(!) cycle when evaluating new software releases. I have heard of an insurance provider that rolled out IE7 just this year.

hendrik-xdest··on Microsoft decides to automatically update Internet Explorer for everyone
And here I thought that all non-updated IE versions were installed in environments where Sysadmins blocked the updates (and will in the future). It would be interesting to see a number of how many installations this change could really target. Like, how many IE 6 to 8 are actually in the wild. Can't be that much, imho.
hendrik-xdest··on How Badoo built a billion-dollar social network on sex
Badoo is big in France, Spain, Italy - how much more Western Europe can it get?
hendrik-xdest··on Apple RIP Logo design
I don't think it is the same: http://ow.ly/i/iHzx

(I don't know if they wanted to be funny or what but it's very crude and inappropriate to open with "iDeath" and that image).

hendrik-xdest··on What's wrong with this code, really?
Dependent on the state of mind, one might even have done something like this (as I can't tell the language used in the example):

this.MyControl.TabPages = new Array();

Try to find something like this when the problem you are confronted with is that a server has to be rebooted every few hours because it eats up memory.

hendrik-xdest··on Book on Third-Party JavaScript from engineers at Disqus (YC 07)
Thank you, financial disasters of the past. For the Europeans: If you order the printed book with the 50% off voucher with the cheaper postage fee, you still won't pay much more than 25 Euros. Oh, and thank you for making that book. That's a title that was definitely missing from my bookshelf (yeah, we still have those in Europe ;)).
hendrik-xdest··on Unsolicited Redesigns (Khoi Vinh responds to NYTimes redesign)
This is mostly the same reaction I had when I read the redesign article. Andy blatantly chose to define what is news to drive his design. For example he defined that the most read articles list is not news. Like, the front page of Hacker News is not news because it is a list of elements that have been ordered by how many people read, comment or upvote them and not by the news value specified by grown journalists.
hendrik-xdest··on Progressive Internet Explorer
You obviously haven't been working with companies in the financial sector. Those Fortran developers you always hear about, this is were they are working. Many companies in that sector use rather old systems that can't be replaced. Some of those systems rely on IE6 or IE7.

I do work for a company that targets that sector and we calculate with a user base of about 50% that still use one of those browsers. Yet, we want them to have all the bells and whistles that the web offers today as well. This will change (and is changing) but rather slowly. Some might even say it barely even moves.

hendrik-xdest··on Progressive Internet Explorer
I use PIE for a charting software we created at my company. Here are some problems we had:

The latest release of PIE is used for IE7 and IE8 but we had some issues with it in IE6 where it would throw JavaScript errors. In addition, there is a problem with hidden elements (style="display: none") for example PNGs with transparent backgrounds or elements that have a linear background and rounded corners. If those become visible without reloading the page, the styles might not be applied correctly. You may find black images instead of the PNGs or missing element styles. This cannot be reproduced regularly, though. I found a beta version somewhere in the message boards that fixes the issues but does not work well with other versions of IE.

We never had any performance issues although we quite heavily use layout elements from CSS3.

BTW: The main website can be reached here http://css3pie.com

hendrik-xdest··on The W3C asks for help finding Prior Art to two Apple Patents.
Imho the best example for this is that the Motorola Droid comes with multi-touch features in Europe, as opposed to the Droid of all countries were Apple holds the multi-touch patent.
hendrik-xdest··on Chosen: A javascript plug-in that makes long select boxes user-friendly.
It looks to me as if there is a z-index problem and the position is not upheld correctly in IE6. In IE9 there is a difference in the linear gradient color. No catastrophes there, imho.
hendrik-xdest··on Chosen: A javascript plug-in that makes long select boxes user-friendly.
Best plug-in of the year, so far.

Apart from what it says, I do not see problems in IE7 or IE8 (there is some style issues in IE9, though). Also, it is nearly working in IE6. I think I'll try to diddle around with some z-index and CSS stuff to get it working. Can't be much more than that.

hendrik-xdest··on Learning Perl 6th Edition available
Great that they removed the preface from the example chapters. Now, you can't find out what has changed in this edition. I saw a reference to StackOverflow in the introduction that I guess wasn't there in the previous version. But apart from that I have no clue if I should get it ...
hendrik-xdest··on John Resig joins the Khan Academy
It's a bad day for Mozilla. Resig and Dion Almaer announce their leave for KA on the same day.

"CloudPerfect is a creative new way of getting you upvoted on Quora. Between trolling /b/ and marriage, people believe they can't learn how to paint. This is where CloudPerfect comes in, with lots of coffee and an army of monkeys, CloudPerfect will revolutionize your social experience."

Sounds reasonable.

hendrik-xdest··on Ask HN: I'm an unknown indie developer. How can I promote my web app?
I tried your app and liked it. But there is no way to get in contact with you easily. Try to offer a simple contact form to send in feedback. And - I can't believe I am saying that - make it visibly beta.

Because I would really like to use grapevin but have run into some technical problems. First, if I add a track I do not get any feedback of it's addition when using the latest non-beta Firefox. Secondly, if I click a song from the "Edit Playlist" page it will always play the first one and not the one I clicked. Before you do any extensions test your app extensivly. It will help spread the word when more user are satisfied with the service.

The next step in my opinion would be to include more music sources, of course. There is already a lot that is recognized. You might want to consider displaying a different "Missing cover" grafic when the song is available from Grooveshark, though. For example "Das Racist - You Oughta Know" does not show a cover but has the song. While when putting in an unknown German band it displayed the same icon. One always has to check his live page if a song can be played or not.

In my opinion, if you get the feedback function up and do not have any financial targets, it's best to let it grow on it's own.
