helmholtz··on What's new in Matplotlib 3.7
Bah. Each time this comes up, people are quick to bash on Matlab. I won't stand for it. Matlab is not many things. It is certainly not all things to all men. But it is Fucking. Productive. for the kinds of quick numerical analyses that engineers often have to do. There is a function for everything and the kitchen sink, the syntax is simple as hell, there is a real IDE, and it gets out of your way.

I've tried all the rest. I've tried Julia. The tooling, my god, it is woeful. The famous Time To First Plot. I've tried Python. Doesn't hold a candle to Matlab for the ease with which you can manipulate matrices and vectors.

Matlab is far from perfect, but fuck it, it's an amazing tool for being productive.

helmholtz··on I was banned because of a security flaw in Facebook’s password recovery system
Nah. Had the same thing happen to me. I once asked dang to delete my account, and he stated much the same to me. In his defence, he was polite, and offered to rename my account to a random name, dissociating me from it. He also

On the other hand, I agree with GP. It's surprising that you cannot delete an account. That HN stay "readable" without the [deleted] is clearly secondary to the possibility of having an account be deleteable. Imagine if I were part of an at-risk group.

helmholtz··on Shrinkflation, SanDisk Style
It was a joke by the inimitable Mitch Hedberg.
helmholtz··on TikTok ‘deinfluencers’ tap into trend for saving money
I regret reading this "article". 58000 views on one video, a tag that has 158 million views, and a whole lot of tempest in a teapot. I learned nothing of value from this.

People hating consumerism is not new. Just like nothing in this article is.

helmholtz··on Shrinkflation, SanDisk Style
> I saw a billboard for a lottery, it said "estimated lotto jackpot 55 million." See, I did not know that shit was estimated. That would suck if you won and they go, "oh, sorry, we were off by two zeros. We estimate that you are angry!"
helmholtz··on How Spotify's podcast bet went wrong
The problem there is you need to install the Google app in addition to the podcast app, something I refuse to do. I just don't get why podcast search is so appalling, and why it's not a bigger deal. It drives me bananas.
helmholtz··on How Spotify's podcast bet went wrong
Read my lips: "Episodes". I want to search through bloody episodes! I want it to go through it's entire index of ALL episode titles, show-notes and transcripts and find me relevant podcast episodes where the phrase I searched is relevant.

I don't want discovery, I don't want AI, and I certainly don't care for any sharing things. I want to be able to find content. And I don't want to go join a series on Episode 592 and go backwards. I'm interested in a topic: Jennifer Aniston, Alex Honnold, Dieter Rams, GUI libraries in Rust, C++ game development, Financial Independence. I just want it to show me individual episodes!

It'd be like searching google for "GUI library in Rust" and it showing me the Rust website and saying "good luck out there!" It should just search the bloody websites and show me the relevant webpage.

helmholtz··on How Spotify's podcast bet went wrong
By contrast, Spotify's Episode Search is the best in the business, bar none. At least on Android. All the other options are so fucking bad, it makes me mad. Let's say I want to search not for a podcast, but all podcasts featuring "Alex Honnold". Well, when I type that in to Spotify, it gives me loads of podcasts he's appeared on, with the option to start playing the episode immediately.

All the other apps that I've tried, AntennaPod, PocketCasts, Podcast Addict, are in stone age. How do these other apps expect me to discover podcasts? They are just glorified RSS feeds, these other apps.

Having said that, I don't want to pollute my music with my podcasts, so I don't use Spotify for podcasts anyway :)

helmholtz··on The Future of Thunderbird
My god, I absolutely agree. On Outlook, you can "Pop Out" the draft of your own email, leaving the original email intact in the background ready for side-by-side view, but that's the only solution I know of.
helmholtz··on The Chemistry of ‘Yes Minister’ (2017)

    > Sir Humphrey: I gather there's an airborne battalion in the air.
    > Jim Hacker: Sounds like the right place for it.
With the best shit-eating grin ever. I love Yes Prime Minister with all my heart. And the event leading up to it:

    > James Hacker : Hello? Yes, Ronnie. I want the president of St George's Island to extend an invitation to Britain to send an airborne battalion on a goodwill visit. No, just a friendly gesture. Goodwill. Yes, at once, please. Thank you.
    > [hangs up]
    > James Hacker : He seemed to think that 800 fully armed paratroopers was an awful lot to send on a goodwill visit.
    > Israeli Ambassador : No, it's just an awful lot of goodwill.
    > James Hacker : [phone rings] Oh, yes, Paul. You know you have an airborne battalion on standby in Germany? Never mind how I know. Well, since it's not being used, I want them to fly straight off to St George's Island. [Pause] Sort of between Africa and India. A goodwill visit. Just showing the flag. They have been invited. Yes. Leave in... six hours. Yes, an *instant* goodwill visit. Tell your press office to announce it at once. No, no, leave me out of it. A *routine* visit. All right - a routine *surprise* visit. Well, say they were invited earlier, but the NATO exercise got in the way. Now they're not needed, they're going anyway. All right. Nobody knows it's not true. Press statements aren't delivered under oath.
helmholtz··on Visual design rules you can safely follow
You missed the motivation behind my diatribe. Wanting black on white is fine (it's what I do on my text editors). I just hate that up and down this thread, that's all I get to read, although the list is full of other nuggets that I would have loved to have seen fleshed out here.
helmholtz··on Visual design rules you can safely follow
It's wearisome how predictable HN is. I guess I've spent too much time on here (and continue to do so!). Every single time something vaguely design-related comes up, the entire discussion is about how thou shalt not steal my god-given right to use pure-black-on-white. Programmers apparently detest anything even remotely not #000, but fuck me is it ever repetitive and boring.

I loved this list.

helmholtz··on FreeCAD Day 2023: Report and continued discussion
Whoops. My apologies. Thought when you said "No catia", you meant "Never again" or something along those lines. Didn't realise you'd never used it.
helmholtz··on FreeCAD Day 2023: Report and continued discussion
People talk shit about CATIA all the time, and I never understand why. There are not many things that can do what CATIA does. Big assemblies, things with a huge number of moving parts, are all CATIA when they're not NX, because you actually can open them and move them around in it. Formula 1? CATIA. Large Hadron Collider? CATIA. Airbus? Guess what?

CATIA is rubbish. But everything else is way worse.

helmholtz··on Reducing technical debt by valuing comments as much as code
Making it strictly worse. TOO_MANY_REQUESTS? How many is too much? In what scenarios?

The code comment in the GP is pithy, explanatory, and reads in plain English. Yours is ripe for misunderstanding.

helmholtz··on Berkeley Mono Ligatures Release
1920x1200? 96 DPI?! Both those fonts look like absolute garbage, and how could they not? Only, in my opinion, Berkeley Mono actually looks more passable of the two. Something about the one on the right makes it look ethereal. Like it's behind the display. But don't let that detract from the fact that looking at code at 96 dpi is absolute garbage. Perhaps you're broke, in which case I retract my stupid comment. But if not: https://tonsky.me/blog/monitors/
helmholtz··on Make a Resume in LaTeX
That's a bit too much of a blanket statement. Latex isn't special. Everyone I know has used it, 100% of them have struggled with margins and fonts and images and equations needing to be rewritten three times and so on. I would not find a Latex resume even remotely novel or interesting. I certainly wouldn't downplay it, but Latex isn't instant-streetcred either.
helmholtz··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
> Is there a right to stay employed?

People have spouses, kids, mortgages. They relocate for work. They pour a lot of their time, energy & emotion into it. It causes people strokes, and hairloss. People bring the stress of their work home, and marriages suffer for it.

Your comment is rather glib. Praise these companies? No thanks.

helmholtz··on YouTube Addiction
Profound statement. Relatedly: "I still have 6 hours before the deadline. I'll spend the first two watching YouTube, and then I'll be ready."
helmholtz··on YouTube Addiction
Depends who you're talking about. Those of us who've literally skipped work to play video games definitely find it easier to watch others play rather than dip our toes in ourselves.
helmholtz··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
Sorry, but sadly not. Rather after Hermann von Helmholtz, who made some pretty sweet contributions to thermodynamics.
helmholtz··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
Man, HN is bursting at the seams with "intellectually stimulating discussions" to whet the appetite of even the most committed intellectual mastorbator. I liked the guy's username and made a remark that it fit the situation well. Rather like r/beetlejuicing. It's nice if HN also takes things a bit lightly from time to time. Not every thread needs to be strict.
helmholtz··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
Brilliant.
helmholtz··on What is negative engineering?
You insure _against_ something. You ensure something. GP is right.
helmholtz··on France bans short haul domestic flights in favour of train travel
If you're going to be dismissing well-meaning political actions with hand-waving and vague insinuations that it's ecobullshit, one would hope you could do better than just a shrug and a "beats me".
helmholtz··on France bans short haul domestic flights in favour of train travel
My man, you still haven't told me what this regulation is going to affect. What are the side effects? I'm not talking about energy infrastructure in Europe, nor am I interested in a wider discussion about 'eco-bullshit' or 'pseudo-environmental policies'. I'd just like to see your take on the unintended consequences of this policy that you are able to foresee. Furthermore, if the airplane traffic is indeed this negligible, then why does it even bother you in the first place?

I'm a bit sensitive myself, and apologies if I sound harsh, but HN has a permanent anti-regulation erection and seems to attract know-nothings who love to argue that all regulation is bullshit and the free market will fix everything, every time an article on a government intervention or policy is posted. It drives me bananas.

helmholtz··on France bans short haul domestic flights in favour of train travel
Your comment is high on inflamatory polemics but lacking in substance. If you'd listed _what_ side effects you do foresee, that would have been a much more interesting comment.
helmholtz··on How I make a living working on SerenityOS
> https://amp.theguardian.com/music/2013/jun/22/amanda-palmer-...

So, she seems quite alright then. A bit egotistical, perhaps not the wisest with the 1.2M USD, a bit 'arty', but nothing toxic indeed.

helmholtz··on How I make a living working on SerenityOS
And, might I add, paid a fitting tribute to Terry Davis.
