helge9210··on [dead]
> there isn’t yet any evidence that he’s committed a crime

The main propaganda message, covered with enough "lubricant", so to speak.

helge9210··on Author warns about 'epidemic of self-censorship'
A person is schoolteacher by profession. The same person holds a personal belief. The same person writes about personally held belief. There is some distance between job/profession and expressing personal beliefs.
helge9210··on Jewish revenge after the Holocaust: How one group plotted to kill millions
> Not the same people

(Not) funny fact: statements "not the same people" and "the same people" are considered both true at the same time.

helge9210··on Ask HN: I will become a father tomorrow, what advice could you share with me?
1. Mother smells tasty. Father is not. To give the mother at least four hours of uninterrupted sleep, she should sleep in a separate room, while father sleeps is nearby. (Received this advice from a nurse with first daughter. Worked over twenty years on all three.) 2. postpartum depression is a thing. Usually I start to keep an eye three to six month after. 3. Father testosterone can go lower. Will be back to normal six month to a year later. 4. First two months, when baby remains at the same spot where you leave it, are the best, don't miss them.
helge9210··on Was the internet designed to survive a nuclear attack?
Having active-active storage infrastructure within 300km radius creates only 1ms latency. It might work.
helge9210··on Where Online Hate Speech Can Bring the Police to Your Door
Yes. You'll stay in jail until you remember it. /s

UK doesn't have a concept of presumption of innocence. So guilty until proved otherwise

helge9210··on Over 50% of CEOs say they’re considering cutting jobs over the next 6 months
Performance boost from a lower coordination overhead might worth it.
helge9210··on Data salaries at FAANG companies in 2022
I lived/worked in Israel (no US experience) and now live and work in Germany.

I would say European engineers are adequately priced relative to the value European companies are able to derive from their work. And FAANG are just matching the market.

helge9210··on Balancing “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” vs. “Release early and often”
> PM says build it the naive way

Why PM has an option to choose here?

> will fail for cases 1,2,3

a) tip QA to test these cases

b) add cases 1,2,3 to "Known issues"

After all that is the reason they call it "beta": "Cause it beta then nothing"

helge9210··on 'Extremely rare' Rameses II-era burial cave found in Israel
Assuming it was never opened before.
helge9210··on 60-80% of Tweeters posting on Russia-Ukraine war are bots, 90% pro Ukraine
I know some people who moved out of Russia in 2008 or earlier, because they were not OK.
helge9210··on 60-80% of Tweeters posting on Russia-Ukraine war are bots, 90% pro Ukraine
> because they could not stay in a country that wages wars

Because sanctions affect their personal well-being. The war started at 2014 and they were OK with it for eight years.

helge9210··on Shopify lets staff decide cash-stock pay mix as shares dive
Stock price is calculated as a sum of future cash flows (dividends D, for example) discounted by time value of money (risk free rate r, for example): sum(P_n), where P_n = D / (1 + r) ^ n and n is a year. When rate r is up P automatically down.
helge9210··on Modi brushes aside US sanctions, immense potential for India-Russia partnership
> the Western-led anti-Russia war

Russia invaded neighboring sovereign nation with the goal of annexing the territory. Dichotomy is simple: If you want to live in a world where this is okay, you can support Russia.

helge9210··on The Sick Society
> It’s actually a miraculous demonstration of just how effective martial law can be in stopping diseases, I guess, and how effective quarantine could be when properly instituted and rigorously upheld.

In case of endemic disease the question is "Do I want to live under martial law till the rest of my life?"

helge9210··on Google employee resigns after ‘retaliation’ for protesting Israeli contract
Let's leave Palestinians for a second. Israeli settler living in occupied territories can vote in Israeli elections. Israeli living in Germany cannot. Both are living abroad, but have different laws applied to them. Having different legal systems for different groups of population is apartheid.
helge9210··on Mikhail Gorbachev has died
There is a saying in Russian that can be translated as "That one died. This one will follow".
helge9210··on Why are you so busy?
> As the company gets bigger

In first startup I was working we were four engineers and our whole shared context could fit into two whiteboards and Kanban board in GitHub.

Next one was a couple of hundreds of engineers and a lot of coordination activity directed by iron fist of program managers.

Next one was fifty engineers but with the same amount of coordination activities (for the sake of the process) and much less progress.

And the current one had ten people in engineering, three chapters (backend, frontend, DevOps), incident board, 1-1s, retro, planning, refinement, weekly, quarter retro and planning and sprint review.

Fun fact: at current place no one knew the term "cargo cult". When I explained the meaning some colleagues considered it offensive.

helge9210··on Why are you so busy?
> I know that most feel that they absolutely HAVE to do these things, since there are part of the business process/ definition of done/company guidelines etc...

Anecdote: at current position I've noticed 100% of my team time goes to "these things". As a team lead I tried to figure out the actual necessity. After I've "lost" the half of the team insisting on doing all the rituals the remaining half started to deliver actual value with much less stress.

helge9210··on A bike tour of Dresden, the heart of Germany’s semiconductor industry
AfD is not relevant anymore. They are openly pushing Russian economic interests now (Nord Stream 2, lifting sanctions) and so became a used asset.
helge9210··on JetBrains Research
Since escalation in Ukraine (war itself started in 2014) they conducted a massive relocation of personnel out of Russia to EU.
helge9210··on Ask HN: Is WWIII already in its early stages?
In my opinion, the World War is ongoing, when every country sees the opportunity to enter a fray and exit in a better position.

"Perceived opportunity" here is the key and actual warfare is less relevant, because in normal situation entering a war has obviously negative outcome.

So, it looks like we're in already.

helge9210··on Housing is at the root of many of the rich world’s problems (2020)
This looks like a positive feedback loop. People move to locations where there are many jobs available, so end of employment would not require moving to another location. More jobs are created, where there is higher availability of candidates.
helge9210··on A little exercise each day improves muscles more than one big weekly workout
There is a factor usually left out: tendons and ligaments.

Lacking blood vessels they can't improve as fast as muscles (tendon/ligament improvement/repair is happening thanks to electric potential gradient generated by piezoelectric effect of stretching/compression), but are part of muscle control system. If a tendon signals overload the attached muscle won't be able to generate full power.

helge9210··on Ambulance returns patient with broken leg to accident scene in Japan (Covid-19)
> Lesson, I guess, is to refuse any Covid tests

For the individual making a rational decision there is no upside, only an unlimited downside (getting refused a treatment for the unrelated condition) as the result of COVID-19 test.

helge9210··on Chrome was delivered without any sprints at all (2021)
> So yeah, you can be 19+, an officer, leading people into combat.

More like 30+.

On average, conscripts are basically useless for the first three years. Only those on extended contacts can be (somewhat) relied upon.

> Or leading a software project.

Software engineering units use 5+ years extended contracts in addition to mandatory 3 years. Plus very heavy selection.

helge9210··on Arctic melting four times faster than rest of the planet, study says
My colleagues eat in twilight (eating area didn't have windows) to lower the energy consumption and limit CO2 release. Yandex is burning 12000 liters of diesel to power their data center for an hour.
helge9210··on A 17-year-old designed a novel synchronous reluctance motor
> That was the end of our homemade thermite project

I call it luck.

I decided not to proceed, when understood, that I have no way to put it off.

helge9210··on How to stop being “terminally online”
I wonder, if the lack of capital letters is a part of the message.
helge9210··on We don't do that here (2017)
There is a reason a new person was hired. For example, to start doing something "they don't do here".
