helge9210··on Putin’s Cinema Fund Rejects Movie Piracy, Fuming Cinema Boss Demands Barbie
Somehow the assumption is that without Euromaidan, Ukraine would still be intact and not in a war.

"Not in a war" part is correct. The government was preparing to give Ukraine to Russia as a whole. Ukrainian paratroopers has an exercise in Summer 2013 to subdue an insurgency in Western Ukraine.

If Russians are afraid to get to jail or get shot, they can always commit self-immolation in protest. (There was a case actually last year, but not against the war. Only against conscription.)

Technically speaking, it became mafia-run the moment Eltsin got guarantees for himself and his family and agreed to give-up power to mafia-KGB-chimera representative Putin.
helge9210··on The Yandex leak: How a Russian search giant uses consumer data
> I cannot in good faith demand

While some people (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasyl_Makukh ) sacrificed their lives in protest of Soviet Russia invasion into Czechoslovakia, timely public statement is the least he could do.

> too hilarious, and what are they going to do? If they pressure you, you’re just going to take a job somewhere else and then they’ll have no one to do actual work

I've never reached this stage as an IC and got directly into it (to resolve the problem) once as a manager.

In my experience, at this point the professional relationship is already dead and most of the times should have been ended long before.

helge9210··on Russia’s army is learning and improving on the battlefield
And we're back to my point of the lack of improvement in the society due to fear of disruption of the status quo.
helge9210··on Russia’s army is learning and improving on the battlefield
USSR did run to the finish losing medals to put the first human to space. USA did the same to put humans on the Moon. You can safely ignore these data points as anomalies. Can Russia consistently innovate in any technological field?
helge9210··on Russia’s army is learning and improving on the battlefield
Crimean War was lost. Russian-Japanese War was lost the same way. WWI way lost by Germany, but Russians lost even to Germans. WWII was won as part of the Allies by sacrificing Ukraine and using the extensive support from the US. Looks like a pattern to me.
helge9210··on Russia’s army is learning and improving on the battlefield
They still don't have running water and indoor sanitary facilities in most of the rural areas.
helge9210··on Russia’s army is learning and improving on the battlefield
Army is a reflection of the society. For the army to improve radically, the society itself has to learn and improve. If it didn't happen for the last 200 years, why would it happen now?
helge9210··on Satellites reveal widespread decline in global lake water storage
> It is incredibly hard to create a fresh water from salty one.

Fresh water is created from the salty water by evaporation all the time.

helge9210··on OpenAI’s Sam Altman nears $100M funding for Worldcoin crypto project
I had an interview with Worldcoin a year or so ago. The crypto part looks like printing monopoly money. The Orb itself is a remarkable peace of technology though.
helge9210··on Greater than 90% chance of El Niño persisting into Northern Hemisphere winter
Planet isn't going to be destroyed. Some areas might become uninhabitable (like Sahara desert or Arabian peninsula), but some other areas might end up better suited for human life or more desirable.
helge9210··on Startups Are Scooping Up Big Tech’s Cast-Off Workers
> people delivering services

This is a misunderstanding. These people are not "delivering service". They are doing "governance and administration". And administration size on Germany is acting like a ratchet: growing sometimes, but never shrinking.

helge9210··on Startups Are Scooping Up Big Tech’s Cast-Off Workers

It feels like this is the main goal.

helge9210··on EU urged to protect grassroots AI research or risk losing out to US
> What roadblocks am I supposed to be experiencing that wouldn’t be there in the US?

Suppose, the startup went bankrupt (idea not relevant anymore, market conditions changed etc.) What would be the cost of abandoning the current one and spinning up a new one in EU for the founder?

helge9210··on Vacations in the Soviet Union
> they didn't give him any anesthetics

This is a description of the most of the Soviet health services.

For example, dentists were using short metal pipe on a thumb when treating kids, so they don't bite or close their mouth.

helge9210··on Millions snap up new Germany-wide public transit ticket
I live and work in Germany for almost two years now.

I witnessed at least two panic attacks caused by the implementation of your suggestion to "encourage them to start thinking themselves instead of blindly executing top-down commands".

helge9210··on Millions snap up new Germany-wide public transit ticket
> Why can I not do that online with my ID? > Why is she even typing it at all

Social function of work. If you do it yourself, what will she do?

If you come up with a solution freeing hundreds of people doing some monkey jobs some in Germany will consider this evil, since people are losing their means of earning salary. This is more difficult with the officials, since they have guaranteed employment.

> 75k is a very, very good salary in Germany

I'm sorry, but it is not. Salary, that is only 3x of minimal wage can't be considered good.

This kind of sentiment is one of the reasons the German companies don't have access to engineering talent.

helge9210··on Why is Israel neutral amid the Russia-Ukraine war?
I don't have to read about it. My grandfather is Holodomor survivor. My other grandmother was sent with family from Odesa to Birobidzhan (Far East).
helge9210··on Why is Israel neutral amid the Russia-Ukraine war?
It is a felony in Russia to mention that WWII started in 1939. Only allowed narrative is The Great Patriotic War started in June 1941.
helge9210··on Why is Israel neutral amid the Russia-Ukraine war?
As both Ukrainian and Israeli I have an opinion on this.

If Israel supports Ukraine, it will undermine the claim on occupied territories and Jerusalem. If Israel supports Russia, it will risk to lose the support of USA (like Iraq after being ally of USA against Iran). Also there is significant amount of Russian agents in Israeli political landscape (basically, all Russian speaking politicians).

helge9210··on Why is Israel neutral amid the Russia-Ukraine war?
Soviet Union was an ally to Third Reich up to 1941.
helge9210··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
> The only advice I've told them is to get out of any online stuff and hit bars.

It took me a while to understand, that "bars" here do not correspond to "outdoor exercise equipment".

> that most men are emotionally and sexually deprived.

Recently I saw Mozart's "The Magic Flute" for the first time. Papageno character heavily resonates with this observation. So, the problem is not new.

helge9210··on The lost medieval sword fighting tricks no one can decode
For example, most of "modern" wushu (so called kung fun) styles disappeared in the last 60 years starting from the Cultural revolution and ending last fifteen years, where in some families grandfather, father and son died one after another in a couple of years.

But the real reason is a lack of cultural context. No one needs to spend four hours a day training to be able to earn a living using violence anymore.
