helge9210··on LLM code generation may lead to an erosion of trust
I checked with HR at my company and got an answer I'm not allowed to announce the following: anyone submitting the code or asking a question about the code without disclosing the fact that the code in question was generated by LLM would be cursed.
helge9210··on SpaceX Starship 36 Anomaly
Expressing new opinion is OK. Expressing a change of opinion in the format "Before ..., but now opposite after ..." smells like propaganda.
helge9210··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
My apartment rental agreement had a clause all "all disagreements are to be resolved in rabbinical court". Reach of the religious courts is unlimited.

Even civil courts are allowed to refer to holy texts if the law is not clear.

helge9210··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
"Jewish State" literally means religious norms and holy scriptures are considered a law. Rabbinical courts are part of the Israeli legal system, which operates religious courts in parallel to the civil court system.
helge9210··on SpaceX Starship 36 Anomaly
The pattern "I used to be [...] fan, but|however|... because of [...] I'm not anymore" is like em dash in the world of propaganda.
helge9210··on The Myth of Developer Obsolescence
> biggest control-freaks

"control-freak" not necessary. For any known sequence/set of feature requirements it is possible to choose an optimal abstraction.

It's also possible to order the requirements in such a way, that introduction of next requirement will entirely invalidate an abstraction, chosen for the previously introduced requirements.

Most of the humans have trouble recovering from such a case. Those who do succeed are called senior software engineers.

helge9210··on Burrito Now, Pay Later
Without an internal passport a person would be detained at the first train station and, in best case, returned back to the farm.
helge9210··on Burrito Now, Pay Later
Correction: slavery in Russia/Soviet Union ended in 1974 when all the rural residents got passports and with it the right to leave the collective farm and change the profession.
helge9210··on Exercise before bed is linked with disrupted sleep
From the diagrams it seems only the maximal level of exercise strain is significantly affecting sleep.

> Exercise strain was quantified using summated-heart-rate-zones scores (SHRZS).

Aerobic exercises at maximal level are not every day thing and by themselves do require up to 72 hours of recovery. Even for elite athletes it would be maximum once or trice per week, depending on the mesocycle.

> The present study had limitations that should be considered. [...] The summated-heart-rate-zones score (SHRZS) method for quantifying exercise strain may underestimate the relative metabolic strain of strength training that involves very brief durations of high-effort movements. Future research could examine the effects of different types of evening strength training (e.g., Olympic lifting).

For weightlifting volume (number of sets) and intensity (weight attempted) of the exercise combined with maximum HR would be a better measure.

> We were unable to control for potential confounds known to impact sleep, such as bright light exposure.

In my experience, at the end of preparatory phase (at the maximum stress) any light leaking into bedroom will make it difficult to fall asleep.

helge9210··on Pydrofoil: Accelerating Sail-based instruction set simulators
Naming things is still one of the two hard problems of computer science.
helge9210··on The 'freaky and unpleasant' world when video games leak into the physical realm
Hopkins-Brie Ontology Syndrome (usually just called Hopkins-Brie Syndrome) is a mental illness caused by overexposure to virtual reality, in which the sufferer becomes increasingly unable to distinguish between the real world and the virtual world.
helge9210··on U.S. pauses all military aid to Ukraine
Statehood of Russia (only since 1721; originally Principality of Moscow established in 1263) is coming from Mongols.

With Kyiv under control, they can claim history and culture of Rus (also known as Kyivan Rus').

This is the fundamental ideological reason for the war going on since 1657.

helge9210··on CDC Study Finds Silent Bird Flu Infections in Dairy Veterinarians
I'm not arguing about the properties of the virus. I'm arguing against the need to worry.
helge9210··on CDC Study Finds Silent Bird Flu Infections in Dairy Veterinarians
Is it sarcasm? There were always viruses evolving to spread between humans.
helge9210··on CDC Study Finds Silent Bird Flu Infections in Dairy Veterinarians
Enemy tanks rolling along your street. A mandate to stay indoors with food delivery organized by the army and finding out your family is not on the list to get any.

There are a lot of more dangerous threats than another flu virus.

helge9210··on Firing programmers for AI is a mistake
Excel is a programming system with pure functions, imperative code (VBA/Python recently), database (cell grid, sheets etc.) and visualization tools.

So, not really "no-code".

helge9210··on SQL or Death? Seminar Series – Spring 2025
To have the first element, you have to describe a relation of order. It's not ordered by default.
helge9210··on ADHD Didn't Break Me–My Parents Did
(Disclaimer: not discussing the author here. These are the thoughts based on personal experiences, resurfaced as the result of reading the post)

Planning for the past (what if my parents would do things differently?) is a sign of depression (not clinical advice). Blaming the parents is not productive and doesn't lead to solutions to the problems at hand.

For me, taking responsibility on deciding what needs to be done, how to get better at doing what needs to be done and how to get better at getting better, shifted the focus significantly.

helge9210··on Ear muscle we thought humans didn't use activates when people listen hard
Science around human body movements is in its infancy. Motion capture can't differentiable various muscle group activations, resulting in the same motion pattern. Electric activity sensors are not sensitive enough to capture individual muscle movements. And there are not enough interesting subjects (top athletes, performers etc) available to scientists to improve models and methods.
helge9210··on One in four 2020 Tesla Model 3 failed the Danish periodic inspection in 2024
With the mileage my Model 3 has comparable ICE car would require 3 to 4 service visits where all the defects (worn brakes, lights, geometry etc) would be fixed as part of the maintenance process. I had only one service appointment to fix noise on rear suspension (factory defect) where wheel were realigned.

It would be more correct to compare number of defects found during the test and during ongoing maintenance.

helge9210··on What Is To Be Done? The book that helped spark the Russian Revolution
He didn't agree with what communism did to him personally. On the other hand, he is totally for the Russian Empire.
helge9210··on What Is To Be Done? The book that helped spark the Russian Revolution
Chernyshevsky -> Lenin -> Solzhenitsyn -> Dugin

This is the trajectory of the Russian intellectuals striving for the "better world".

helge9210··on US-based ultra runner arrested in India for carrying Garmin InReach
Like Israel did 15 years ago with Kindle/iPads: upon arrival you give up your device for "safekeeping" and pick it up as you leave the country.
helge9210··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
Same in Germany. There are minimum requirements on the living area for children.
helge9210··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
> Not sure why 2019 specifically, it's 2024.

Because in 2019 real estate was not only expensive by itself, but also all the future growth was added to a price.

Today in 2024 you can buy very cheap in some places (north, for example).

> there was a stock-market crash in 1983

Not just stock-market. By the time of the crash, Likud laid waste to the whole economy to undermine "the left".
