hedora··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
The remaining non-corrupt members of the executive branch (or the state governments) would uphold the oaths they took, lock potus and friend in boxes, and ship them off.

As for Israel, as I understand it, the next election will mean domestic jail time for the incumbents unless the polls are wildly wrong.

At that point, it would be easy for Israel to start climbing out of lawlessness too.

True, but oil is a mostly inelastic commodity (consumers can’t really respond to price changes quickly, and neither can producers).

So, if passenger demand halved overnight, prices for long-haul transport would implode. Even with the straits closed, tanks in the supply line would start to hit capacity, and spot prices could even go negative again.

It’s in the article. They link to something explaining the range.

At first I thought that’s why the graph zeros where it does, but it’s Y axis starts at 200M.

hedora··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
The reserve is effectively empty at 250M-300M barrels, and currently sits at 284M. The rapid deceleration to 400K could mean that there’s no quick way to keep withdrawing the remaining reserves.

Hopefully, it hits effective zero, and people start buying EVs.

As a bonus, maybe the military will stop wasting gasoline to murder civilians, since we’ve already established they value oil over absolutely everything else, including human life.

hedora··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
Though note that, for some reason, the last 250M barrels are not physically extractable from the SPR, and the red line has dropped to 284M.

Iran and the Houthis both have to stop the war before all the Middle East supply chains start turning back on.

The US is winning on so many fronts these days, it’s getting hard to track. /s

Diesel touched $8.99/gal this week. I want to know what happens when the sign runs out of digits at $10.

Is it tied to the cash register? Will the pumps run out of digits too? Will they still be able to sell gas?

One thing I can say: My F150 won’t care. It runs off solar.

hedora··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I’m in the US, and won’t buy booze from red states. I’m really getting to know our local (and also Scottish / Irish) distilleries.

I don’t imagine I’d buy any American imports if I was overseas.

hedora··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Wait for climate change to really get started.
hedora··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Send all collaborators to the international criminal court. (In the US, especially congress critters and members of the executive branch.)

Also, blockade Israel proportionally to the Gaza blockades. I doubt they would have kept murdering red cross members in Gaza once the supermarkets started running out of food.

hedora··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
So, basically, the government (and, now Nvidia) wants to be able to kill switch all computers moving forward? (including stuff like vehicle and aeronautic control systems, cell phones, and cameras)

What could possibly go wrong?

hedora··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
I’ve repeated it a hundred times security = confidentiality, integrity and availability.

One reason to strongly prefer Apple over Google is that (as I understand it) you can still walk into a store with ID and recover your online identity.

hedora··on Bonsai 2 27B: Near-Lossless Compression in a 9x Smaller Footprint
RAM requirements? My current rule of thumb is “a byte per parameter”, but I doubt this runs in 1/9th that (~ 3GiB).

Also, perf speedup?

hedora··on Keys Not Included: recovering the signing keys for US driver's license barcodes
I imagine a good forger would add wear marks to the barcode so it doesn’t scan for a plausible reason.
hedora··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
The hospital thing is standard practice in the US. The Canadian hospitals likely have to lie to get reasonable payouts from US insurance companies.

For instance, I once needed $600 of tests at the ER. The hospital billed $80K. The insurance company paid $7K. I paid $100.

Sure, the $600 does not include the ER overhead, but the $7K was still insanely inflated. The important thing is that the money ultimately came from insurance premiums, so every middleman was able to reliably extort all patients.

hedora··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
It would need to be actually negotiated and stuff, but the opposition quote is just agreeing with all the public statements I have seen from the EU and Canadian leadership.

So, I guess the opposition supports associate membership in everything but name.

hedora··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
I think it is support for the actual thing. Functional economies benefit startups, even if the startup is in the US and the functional parts of the market are overseas.

I have a litmus test for democrats. If they pass, it could dig out in a decade or two. If not, it is probably game over:

Do you support pursuing criminal charges for current members of the executive branch and their counterparts in private industry? Do you support pursuing maximum sentences, including asset seizure and the death penalty? Do you support suspending or otherwise not honoring presidential pardons? Will you cooperate with ICCC warrants?

If you think my litmus test is too harsh, consider the fact that the Bush family made its fortune by illegally selling to the Nazis, was caught literally organizing a military coup in the US, and was instrumental in ripping out a perfectly good national passenger train network.

In response they got a slap on the wrist and used their illegal gains to control the white house. Twice.

Your argument is that some vague hypothetical bad thing could happen to Canada if they diversified their trade partners, so they should just accept economic terrorism from DC and not attempt to support the parts of their economy that already rely on imports/exports?

That is a strange take.

hedora··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Yeah, but the federal government is completely ignoring the constitution.

Which amendment contains the clause claiming the rest of the contract survives if parts are just unilaterally deleted by one side?

Don’t forget granting partial control of that other strait to the Houthis a few days ago.

Closer to home: there have been a record number of firefighter fatalities this year. It is partially climate change, and partially redirecting national guard troops to harass folks in DC and pick up litter.

According to this morning’s news, he’s also micromanaging of firefighting efforts to make them less effective, more expensive, more dangerous, and to maximize future fire risk.

Basically he’s dictated head on attacks to fire fronts, and complete suppression. All experts and firefighters agree it is better to contain the borders of the fires instead, and only fight fires on the interior if it makes ecological sense or protects buildings, lives, etc. (After all, the burn on the interior is necessary for forest health, and also removes fuel.)

Then there’s the NASA thing, where he didn’t want to pay $10M for building maintenance, so instead put $10B of active missions at risk, and threw out > $100M of specialized equipment (or auctioned it off at tenths of pennies on the dollar; probably to US adversaries).

In other, less covered news, Trump and Rubio are misusing their positions to loot Cuba:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/17/trump-marco-...

They are currently targeting civilian populations there by weaponizing access to necessities. They have intentionally created multiple humanitarian crises, then rerouted food and energy imports through Florida companies for private benefit.

This is a long way of asking: Can the US west coast become an associate EU member too? Here in California, the Sierra Nevada and deserts of the southwest are already 99% of the wall we’d need to protect our border from maga zealots.

hedora··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
I read the comment as: Trump’s policies are all forcing the US into stagflation so hard the fed has to do this, knowing it’ll cause a recession.

Fed actions typically take a few years to be felt, regardless of administration.

hedora··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
Exactly like “biden’s” inflation from the zero interest rate policy.
hedora··on Douglas Adams and the exterminated Doctor Who adventure
I recently discovered his text adventure bureaucracy.

They should sell copies. I’m sure some foundation model company would happily hand them more than enough to establish a self sustaining foundation. Also, then there would be multiple copies. They could even give torrent access to libraries.
hedora··on An update on Wayback Machine access
Are there any decent/reputable residential proxy companies? I’m pretty sure I’ll end up needing one occasionally, for those days when my residential IP has a poor reputation score.
hedora··on An update on Wayback Machine access
My use of wayback has skyrocketed recently due to anti-bot measures.

I often cannot get past captchas, and archive.org is one of the fallbacks I try.

However, archive.is, etc are more reliable.

I wish the internet archive acted more like a library system, where multiple organizations could mirror the content.

They are a big single point of failure, and I’m shocked Trump/SCOTUS haven’t intentionally burnt the archives down yet.

hedora··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
On 26, for me, the baseline is (1) press the siri button on carplay maps (2) speak destination (3) it shows a screen with a map and blue dot showing my destination, and siri says “Sorry, I do not know where you are.”

The version before that, it’d send me to the wrong destination but typing the speech recognizer output verbatim into maps worked.

So, maybe 27 siri is better? (How could it be worse?!?)
