hedberg10··on Elon Musk Decries ‘M.B.A.-ization’ of America
No, it's a thinking error. People achieve competency in one area and then conclude that it applies to all areas as well.

"I have a masters in biology, I know whats wrong with this country's finances". The soft narcisism of credentialism.

hedberg10··on How to Think for Yourself
The reddit trap. Upvotes are supposed to be given for a good reply, even if it's against your opinion, not a reply that you happen to agree with. Same with downvotes.

Never happens, thus censorious fence sittery.

hedberg10··on Cracks in the Great Stagnation?
The American self hate / leftist meme ("America is only great because it robs other people") is fascinating. There are very good arguments against it.

I wouldn't assume the opposite and become a boastful patriot either, but maybe the big leaps taken in the past were so good that people got lazy. You didn't need to innovate or only innovate for money (which isn't nearly as effective a motivator as being annihilated by Germans or ICBMs). There is also the argument of low hanging fruits, but I find that it's easy to undervalue the inventions of things you already know very well.

There is no grand narrative anymore. Things are just chugging along. Covid is a new narrative and voilá: mRNA vaccine.

hedberg10··on I tried out-training my diet for 18 months
Don't believe it. It's simply portion sizes. Just look at McDonalds meals. It's shocking how much they've grown. It's been a while since I looked it up, but a normal meal in the 50s was what is today a kid's meal. Hamburger (1), small (!) fries (that might not even be sold anymore), and a small drink (250ml).

Want to eat pancakes? Eat a small amount. With butter. It's fine. Don't eat a stack that is shown in ads.

Want fries? Eat two normal potatoes fried in beef fat. Not potatoes the size of a human head.

It is conscious work to retrain your stomach, but it is possible. I'm saying this as somebody who just ate 2 slices of bread (1 sandwich) and now feels like I can't move, where before I'd easily eat 6 slices. That was my breakfast (at lunch), I haven't even had an earlier meal.

No bodily exhaustion, no pain, no excessive time commitments, no money (you even save money!), no feeling the need to punish and taking revenge on yourself, just being conscious.

Works well with alcohol consumption, too. Ask me how I know how those big red wine glasses which fit 25% of the bottle are bullshit, same as pints. Those are two portions, easily. Look at old photographs: The glasses are tiny.

When you watch "The Office" you think Michael Scott is bad and cringy, fake firings and all.

Then you get into the real world. I've had to explain, as a very junior employee, that joking about firing someone is bad. And maybe this behavior would have something to do with morale. This person oversaw about 250 people and had been for 10+ years.

It is. When you read it in isolation here, it's fine. If you have to read pages and pages of it and you have to concentrate/have half your brain working on the logic of the code, you don't want to annoy your brain with details like these.

hedberg10··on Charisma: Now You’ve Got It, Now You Don’t
I think she just focused on narcissism for a whole month, as well as it being somewhat of a specialty of hers. It's also a pretty big Youtube niche. If you watch the Med Circle content she is pretty succinct and well versed on other mental health issues as well.
hedberg10··on Charisma: Now You’ve Got It, Now You Don’t
Dr Ramani is pretty awesome, but all her views are heavily skewed towards narcissism and it's dangers, rightfully so, since people seem to underestimate that trait.

It all depends how you define charisma. If it's "larger than life" it can be and is often abused, if it's "easy to be around and suave" that comes closer to what I would think charisma is.

hedberg10··on The Anti-Social Novelist
The world is a mirror. If you invite people into yours and react in any way, they have a tiny slice of control over your day. You get infected by their negativity or positivity - that is what you mirror and put out and that is what comes back to you. So you need to be aware and in control of what you let in. The concept of the pendulum in reality transurfing. Voodoo, but helpful to me.

So if I'm being really mean: Many reviews serve only that purpose. It's not about the [thing]. It's about subtly influencing a life - yours. Narcissism, if you will, though much more subtle than usually understood and manipulative for sure. The critic puts himself above the creator, usually these days the critic has no hope in hell in creating anything equal, but gets to feel superior anyway. "I am not able to create a painting like da Vinci, I shall submit this pissoir."

Also if you are that hypersensitive: Look into avoidant personality disorder. And "Stalking the Soul" by Hirigoyen[1].

hedberg10··on How I remember what I learn
It's a skill to notice when to simply look something up.

It's much easier to just get frustrated and blame some humans. That makes the time between an incident and simply looking something up even longer. Some people might never simply look something up as their frustrations exceed their lifetime.

hedberg10··on Alcoa 50k ton forging press
Press light alloys for every aircraft ever since WW2. The Americans discovered that Germans were able to build better airplanes because of die forging presses like this (larger pressed metal pieces spanning the whole fuselage, instead of smaller pieces and more rivets)[1].

So the Air Force initiated the press program, leading to this thing. It's on the list of mechanical engineering landmarks[2] and it's my dream to see it one day.

People don't know how important this thing is.

hedberg10··on YouTubers are upscaling the past to 4K, but historians want them to stop
Well, technically you're right, but I don't think the pigments in our skin made huge evolutionary advancements in ~100 years. I'd guess people were working more outdoors, but that's it.

So if you were to recolor a film you can take skin colors from today. But an advert, car color or fabric is incredibly difficult, even if you have the original, since the material will have degraded. Even if you repaint it with the original paint it will look different, since the paint will have changed, or if you use new paint the process to manufacture the paint (->led).

It might as well be another universe.

hedberg10··on YouTubers are upscaling the past to 4K, but historians want them to stop
"The colours that suddenly flood into the streets of 1910s New York aren’t drawn from the celluloid itself; that information was never captured there."

I've tried to make that point, but I failed many times. Let's try this crowd: We know what colors human faces have, so we can nail those, but coloring a film from, say, the 1950s the way photos from that era looked, is not what the colors back then actually looked like. That's just how camera technology was able to capture them at the time.

So even if you captured color back then, it probably wasn't very realistic.

I don't think people should stop experimenting, I find these videos fascinating and loved Peter Jacksons film, but the past didn't look like you think it did. You're just used to it because all the photographs from the era look a certain way but they were limited.

hedberg10··on The long lost manual for the Zuse Z4 has been found
Just because Germans are taught not to be proud of their history using the above method (perfectly sound argument), doesn't mean they aren't. It's just more quiet and subtle.

hedberg10··on Dreading a dark winter lockdown? Think like a Norwegian
It's not big jackets. It's the jacket etiquette. You must take the jacket off, otherwise it'll be too warm with all the people crammed in there and you will sweat, essentially making the climate in the car worse & smelly, then going outside where you'll get sick, since you're now wet. I don't get why people choose to suffer.

I will wake up at 5 to avoid that and the masses on public transport if I actually have to go to the office.

hedberg10··on Work on What Matters
Does anybody else think work in bigger companies is just snacking and only snacking? With the faint hope that all 20.000 employees' snacking somehow is more then the sum of all parts and assembles to a high impact 10 story Powerranger/Gundam?

People sit on their niche, defend it to the death and let it take up all their time. That's how it was in every big organisation I've seen. Understandably so, people didn't want to be seen as lazy or expendable, they wanted to defend their self-worth. That's how you get to Parkinson's law and the cult of busyness (and stress, lots of stress, even though there was no reason for it, it's just work, maybe explaining the increase in depression/burnout).
