heartles··on $200 retail whole genome sequencing now available
The sample file they provide lists 12 errors, so likely at least that.

EDIT: Unless I'm reading the results wrong

heartles··on Helm: Personal Email Server
You learn something new every day, I always assumed the green meant OP, like how reddit uses blue. I didn't even notice the change in username Thanks!
heartles··on Helm: Personal Email Server
I mean, my thought is that if a high volume of spam causes other email servers to block Helm, then it makes it unusable to the good actors in the system. I didn't see the CEO address this.

Or, maybe I just misunderstand smtp idk

heartles··on Helm: Personal Email Server
No offense, but given that you are making a product that has a much higher potential to enable bad actors than usual, isn't it kind of you/your company's job to try to solve it?

EDIT: Just realized I responded to the wrong person :(

heartles··on Why We Should Watch Less News
I will say, that's one reason why I've been tending towards NPR/PBS for my news source. It seems more likely to me that I am the customer when there aren't any advertisers (besides the occasional "supported by" blurb that lasts a few seconds).
heartles··on Google, but for colors
I think so, it's not returning results for me either.
heartles··on NASA is bringing cryosleep chambers out of fiction
That makes me wonder, what kind of bandwidth could you get out there? Obviously latency will be bad, but if bandwidth is good enough they might still be able to download a data pack daily containing messages from loved ones, news, and the occasional movie
heartles··on YouTube Stars Being Paid to Sell Academic Cheating
Ha, that story reminds me of an old Onion video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYaZ57Bn4pQ

Same concept taken to its extremes.

heartles··on Boeing and Airbus, the new ‘super duopoly’
There's also an argument to be made for Bell labs, back when Bell had a monopoly on the phone lines there were some amazing developments to come out of Bell Labs
heartles··on Carl Kasell Has Died
I agree, at least "NPR Newscaster Carl Kasell has died" would've been appropriate
heartles··on Netflix, Long an AWS Customer, Tests Waters on Google Cloud
Depending on the details, that could be considered a trust and then you'd be in the same boat as if you were declared a monopoly.
heartles··on America should borrow from Europe’s data-privacy law
Given that the quoted sentence ends with _...although fair use examples exist (in the background of a personal vacation photo, for example)._ I assume your scenario would fall under this
heartles··on Economist behind Uber study admits error, adjusts numbers
I assume they mean the extra costs in those areas due to driving, for example, driving for Uber will cause you to use your car much more, which can wear your car down faster.
heartles··on MoviePass CEO says the app tracks your location before and after movies
Afaik, none in the US let you bring food in, but it's trivial if anyone in your group has a hoodie or a purse
heartles··on Taiwan ban single-use plastic straws, plastic bags, disposable utensils by 2030
> The best option is to stop using straws. They're completely unnecessary unless you have a physical disability.

I will note that straws are useful while driving, as you can drink without obscuring your view of the road. There's an argument that you shouldn't be distracting yourself from the road like that, but that's sort of a different discussion.

heartles··on Why I don't use my real photo when messaging with customers on my website
While I think the other commenter on this post stated their point unhelpfully rudely, I agree that I think you're writing the child off too quickly. I'd imagine that giving up on a kid at this stage would only make it less likely that they realize how terrible they are being.

Even if adults don't know that a kid is being shitty, they can still lead by example towards a happier outcome

heartles··on Senator asks FBI director to name the cryptographers who support backdoors
Agreeing with other comments, that seems like a problem with warrants in general, not with some supposed technology. If cops can get a warrant to raid anyone's house then of course they'd be able to get a warrant to raid anyone's phone in this situation. The solution to that issue would be to fix how warrants are granted to make them less prone to abuse. But that seems like an entirely different debate.
heartles··on Senator asks FBI director to name the cryptographers who support backdoors
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assumed the criteria for "exceptional criminal investigations" included the obtaining of a warrant to access said data.

Suppose some magical system like this was possible "breakable encryption, but only in the presence of a warrant". What are the arguments against this?

heartles··on What It Felt Like in Hawaii When Warning of an In-Bound Missile Arrived
> polygamy, child abuse, and endless fast and testimony meetings

Speaking anecdotally about my experiences in Oregon with Mormon friends, this feels like a gross misrepresentation. I haven't seen any of these situations pop up, and certainly not in any way that would cause it to be systemic.

heartles··on Call of Duty gaming community points to ‘swatting’ in Wichita police shooting
Do your best to avoid pissing off or making yourself known to crazies, and do your best to make sure that any actions that might piss off crazies or make you a public figure can't be traced back to an address.

It's not a great solution, and there might be other ways, but this would be the common advice. It's not exactly feasible all the time though.

heartles··on A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance
If it's FTC robotics, they typically use an app framework that manages the wireless connection and enforces some game rules (ex: autonomous vs driver controlled period), and they just program in Robot behavior around that.

Or at least that's how it was when I left a couple years ago.

heartles··on Can Programming Be Liberated, Period? (2008) [pdf]
I'm not sure if we hugged it to death, or if the website's down for maintenance, but looks like the site is unavailable.

Thankfully there's archive.org snapshots: https://web.archive.org/web/20171226133115/http://www.wisdom...

heartles··on Consumers are frustrated by endless streaming services
For most, probably never. While installing Plex/Kodi on an old machine isn't that hard, it's well outside of the comfort/effort zone of most people.
heartles··on The AI Guru Behind Amazon, Uber, and Unity Explains What AI Really Is
This feels to me more like an ideological talking point than a statement with evidence to back it up. Can you explain what you mean when you say that human intelligence can create new information?

My first thought is that humans can draw conclusions from information given to them, but that sounds more like deriving information from other information.

heartles··on Court OKs child porn prosecution of minors distributing pictures of themselves
Implying that Snapchat is mostly for sexting is doing a disservice to the platform, isn't it? In my experience (which is just an anecdote, idk if there are stats on this) Snapchat has been ~95% showing dumb jokes to friends
heartles··on The Efficacy of Reddit’s 2015 Ban Examined Through Hate Speech [pdf]
> I can make fun of my wife and my kids and my friends, call them funny names. It doesn't mean I hate them.

That may be true. But it's also very clear to those that visited the sub that FPH was far beyond just "funny names" and definitely lived up to it's name.

heartles··on Show HN: A tool to compare news from liberal and conservative sources

heartles··on Medium and the Scourge of Persistent Sharing Bars
Exactly! The number of services that actually need to be an app to accomplish their goal is staggeringly low compared to the number of apps out there. I would far rather use a well-designed website that works for everyone with a web browser over a bloated, ugly app.
