heartag··on /e/OS: A complete "deGoogled" mobile ecosystem
Agree that the website should do this. But adding here that the answer is "Mostly, yes." e/os/ includes microg by default, which replaces some of the Google Services with open source implementations.

heartag··on In Praise of the Cybertruck
It's ugly in comparison to the cyberpunk aesthetic it failed to capture. We live in a golden age of available cyberpunk design and art, yet the cybertruck only draws inspiration from an elementary school line drawing.
heartag··on Ask HN: What does the outcome of the race mean for tech? Particular startups?
I worked for a startup designing solar panel meters during the 2016 administration, and know firsthand how damaging it was. The tariffs put in place affected raw materials for the panels, but somehow not the finished products from overseas that we were competing with. The entire R&D branch had to be frozen out until it was over.
heartag··on America's Future
The country's most immature hacker wants to talk politics with you.
heartag··on Elon Musk's disaster relief promises: Should we believe the hype?
Musk's attacks on the real heroes of disaster relief is insane. And completely separately, the scummy half-truth behind his free internet claim is insane.
heartag··on Nightmare trying to recover hacked Facebook account
Getting a human to help is impossible at Facebook, and it's on purpose. I lost $200 to a scammer on Marketplace, and the only recourse was to go through my credit card company.

... Don't buy things on Marketplace that offer shipping. The seller will give you a real tracking number to an unrelated package with the same zip code destination, which means it is much harder to claim that the package never arrived to you.

heartag··on Ask HN: Do you track how your email address is used?
Fastmail offers per-service generated addresses. I think it's kind of fascinating to watch my email address that went solely to my local credit union start sending me spam somewhat related to my employer.
heartag··on Ask HN: How much is your side-project costing you?
Not a side project, but I just spent $500 on two UPSs for my homelab to run... Nextcloud and tt-rss.

At least I'm also not having fun and frustrated about the hosting software.

Hi Tris!

heartag··on Disabled man received $600/mo to visit Oregon businesses he then sued
Title is fairly misleading. ADA puts hurdles to enforcement by making a person sue to get the legal minimum accessibility infrastructure.
heartag··on LosslessCut: The Swiss army knife of lossless video/audio editing
I just found out about this app recently and love it. Hard to believe I ever fired up a full blender instance and video project to cut clips, much less regularly.
heartag··on Launching a Missile from a Submarine Is Harder Than You Think
It's a good read. But I'm honestly baffled by the number of typos.
heartag··on Ask HN: If you drive a car, what car is it and why?
1998 Honda Civic. Somewhere over 350k miles, the odometer is broken.

I bought it for $1200 in 2011 and just never stopped daily driving it. Granted, I love doing the maintenance myself, and I easily have a few thousand dollars in tools for it lying around. Gets about 35mpg too.

I know my situation doesn't fit yours at all re: safety features and comfort. But I'm an advocate for any car that's paid off.

heartag··on Is Elon Musk worth his £44B Tesla pay package?
But he hit those marks by lying through his teeth about capability and timelines. And now Tesla cars aren't selling to the point the holding lots are visible from space.

heartag··on Elon Musk says Tesla shareholders voting to back $56B pay deal
Time to strap in for another decade of willfully misleading speculation presented as "on track for next year."
heartag··on Gravity Without Mass: UAH Study Proposes Alternative to Dark Matter
Hey, look, it's my alma mater. Back in the news for wonky gravity physics research. Gotta love it.

heartag··on Recovery after HP tech support bricked my father's laptop
Thanks for sharing. I love how detailed that writeup is. And you used the tools that I wasn't smart enough to employ for mine.
heartag··on Recovery after HP tech support bricked my father's laptop
The laptop was purchased with upgraded RAM, so there wasn't any OEM sticks to swap in. That is a good idea if possible though.
heartag··on Recovery after HP tech support bricked my father's laptop
I agree. The situation was me trying to use materials on-hand, but it makes the writeup less useful.
heartag··on Recovery after HP tech support bricked my father's laptop
I feel like a lot of companies went that way. I have one of those HP calculators, and it was fantastic.
heartag··on Recovery after HP tech support bricked my father's laptop
I should have included the year, apologies.

heartag··on Comparison of OSS photo management tools
I unironically have been making a text file of photo management tools I wanted to go through and try before picking one to settle on. Thank you for this comparison chart!

Edit, the text file contents so far:

• Damselfly • Immich • Lychee • Media Goblin • Photo-Stream • Photoprism • Photoshow • Photostructure • Photoview • PiGallery2 • Piwigo • Pixapop • Photobox

heartag··on Ask HN: Arch Linux vs. Ubuntu, Thoughts?
I've been using Arch for over a decade at this point. It's broken on me a handful of times and needed a live USB to recover, but overall has been incredibly robust.

My advice is to try everything out and then use what you like. Ubuntu is great and stable.

heartag··on On Memorial day, will you thank someone for their service?
Something that adjusted my cynical attitude as a college student was reading "Don't Blow Yourself Up" by Homer Hickam. He was an early role model of mine as a child watching October Sky on repeat, and in the book he describes being judged for his time in the military regardless of what he did or how he felt about it.

And just in case you're going to run into someone who will chastise you for thanking them this weekend: Memorial Day is dedicated to the dead, Veterans Day to the living / all veterans. So attending a memorial service may be an appropriate way to mark the weekend.
