headShrinker··on 100Mbps uploads and downloads should be US broadband standard, senators say
I’m in the same boat with spectrum, 9Mbps up, which works out to 1.44MB up in real world example. It takes me upwards of a full day to upload a 30 minute 4K YouTube video! It’s shockingly bad. I called to upgrade and the only option is business class for $200 per month offering 35Mbps up.

StarLink beta welcome email just arrived and I’m counting the days till I cancel Spectrum completely

headShrinker··on WHO scientists: NYT misquoted us to fit a prescribed narrative
Not surprised you are getting immediately down voted. My post is as well. There seems to be bias HN users as well, no amount of facts or historical reference is enough to correct it.
headShrinker··on WHO scientists: NYT misquoted us to fit a prescribed narrative
“Chinese officials urged the W.H.O. team to embrace the government’s narrative about the source of the virus, including the unproven notion that it might have spread to China from abroad, according to several members of the team. The W.H.O. scientists responded that they would refrain from making judgments without data.”

‘“It was my take on the entire mission that it was highly geopolitical,” Dr. Fischer said. ‘

“lack of detailed patient records both from early confirmed cases, and possible ones before that.”

‘“We asked for that on a number of occasions and they gave us some of that, but not necessarily enough to do the sorts of analyses you would do,” said Dominic Dwyer, an Australian microbiologist on the W.H.O. team, referring to the confirmed cases.’

‘In the end, the W.H.O. experts sought compromise, praising the Chinese government’s transparency, but pushing for more research about the early days of the outbreak in Wuhan in late 2019.’

After following this for over a year, witnessing China manipulating or withholding information, reading the article in question, and reading all of the associated tweets, it is clear every team involved has inherent biases.

The WHO investigation team is just as much political as it is scientific. The team needs to seem cooperative in order to get more information, which they desperately need. The team said they would not come to any outcomes without all of the data first yet they did exactly that by saying, the virus likely came from food that was imported and it is not likely that it came from the lab. China is clearly still trying to cover up. The US is still trying to investigate any possible origin story, but don’t seem particularly keen on a lab origin story. It’s mostly far right Republicans like Tom Cotton who originally proposed and perpetuated the lab origin theory in the first place, not exactly New York Times’ bread and butter butter customers.

NYT does not have a prescribed narrative of a lab origin story. WHO scientist have a very strong interest in continuing to gather information from China through cooperative means. So I’m not surprised they would throw shade on a New York Times article saying that they were greeted with lots of hesitation from China. The only part of this I don’t understand is why there is a the Hacker News post with links to scientist’s tweet that all but confirms the bias and intent already illustrated by said NYT story.

TLDR: WHO scientist are not happy to see themselves being quoted as having difficulty working with the Chinese, as they need to continue working with the Chinese. They would probably like the New York Times story redacted, so they are claiming to have been misquoted... nothing to see here folks, moving along

headShrinker··on The Progressive Purge Begins: Tech’s stampede will lead to more populist anger
Funny how you mention all the things the 'left' is doing while omitting an actual coup d'état where more than a few people died. "Bringing the country together" is only possible when the extremist no longer have the loudest voice.

I'm not on board with all the virtue signaling coming from tech and the left, but you lost me at 4 years of continuous lies and storming the capital.

headShrinker··on Twitter deletes China embassy's Xinjiang 'emancipation' tweet
Agreed. With each movement and gyration I feel a metaphorical boa-constrictor wrapping tighter and tighter around our freedoms. I can put myself on both sides of most arguments, while my emotional attachment is to a democratic socialist leaning. The implications for tech determining how, where, what and why to every aspect of our daily lives is deeply concerning. Freedom of speech has always had limits and those limits are essential to democracy. Those limits were deeply debated among legal scholars for decades before decisions were made.

Now I feel we are making quick brash moves in a moment of excitement and drunkin power, with no judicial oversight. In our collective hangovers we will begin to realize the true ramifications of tech companies deciding what is fair speech and fair thought at its inception, way before a movement, momentum or Legal judicial oversight is even possible.

headShrinker··on Twitter deletes China embassy's Xinjiang 'emancipation' tweet
This really should be the top comment. China’s comments on our democracy are always filled with so much irony it’s laughable.
headShrinker··on From its name to its drug interactions, there’s a lot going on with grapefruit
> “But Zoloft, Viagra, Adderall, and others do not. “Currently, there is not enough clinical evidence to require Zoloft, Viagra, or Adderall to have a grapefruit juice interaction listed on the drug label,” wrote an FDA representative in an email.”

There is some pretty good research on the effects of grapefruit with viagra bioavailability.

headShrinker··on Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses
I used to have a dot in my gmail address then I started receiving messages to my address without the dot. The messages were from people I didn't know to people I didn't know. I thought there was something wrong and I was receiving other peoples messages.

And this is where it gets weird... I was.

Just not because of the dot. My gmail handle is pretty short, 6 chars. First name last initial, pretty cool. I got it during the early in the first beta year, (gmail was beta for like 10 years.) However 10 years later I'm now receiving emails in german, parking tickets from cities I've never been, paid subscriptions, access to gmail and facebook accounts because people set my gmail handle as their recovery address. I can even unlock a guys car from the manufacturers web UI whom I've never met. The best/worst by far is the time the FBI reached out to me, which I thought was some bad phishing attempt and replied mildly taunting them. However, it was in fact a real FBI agent who wrote back noticeably annoyed at my flippant response. There was a vailed threat that if I don't take this seriously things would happen. A lump formed in my throat. I called them and for 5 minutes it was kind of scary. I found out a doctor had been using my email handle for oxytocin prescriptions and they were investigating this doctor... I explained that I had received other messages for this doctor and approximated his age and name, explained my short desirable email address, at which point the agent broke their stern professional tone and we shared a little chuckle.

headShrinker··on Ask HN: What are your favorite YouTube channels to learn stuff?
> girlfriend leave him around which time he started being super mopey

That tends to happen.

I often wonder what enables people to leave such scathing reviews of someone else's work. Reviewers like you had nothing to do with the production or promotion of videos and often don't pay anything to watch them. If a user feels a channel is going awry, they have no resistance to belittling the creator and doing so with a total lack of empathy.

Sure the anonymity is a huge factor that doesn't make someone care enough to write about it. It's as if you felt a sense of ownership in Cody'sLab and he let you down when he began to display the negative affects of his real live in the videos he created.

Your feeling of ownership over something you have done nothing to earn is entitlement. YT creators are just people and they don't get paid a lot. They are constantly chasing an algorithm created within a labyrinth for which they have they have no control over. They feel they need to create and post weekly or they will be penalized. Once they achieve Internet influencer status they find it is a very lonely depressing place to be and everyone watching has demands yet provides no money and no help to create. It's frankly disgusting to see people behave this way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1mv0vwb08Y

In this video Cody'sLab clearly spells out that he's going through a hard time in his life. He's allowed to be human. If you don't like it just move on and shut your mouth. Have some dignity and allow others around you to reclaim or maintain their dignity and self-respect.

headShrinker··on Mariana Trench: Deepest-ever sub dive finds plastic bag
Meant as a casual flippant joke but your right, people should ignore that colloquialism
headShrinker··on Mariana Trench: Deepest-ever sub dive finds plastic bag
But plastics aren’t carbon neutral and most aren’t manufactured to be reused. They’re made from buried dino bone. On the other hand, paper comes from trees which pulls carbon from the air so if and when that carbon reenters the air, the cycle is complete. Paper is in fact carbon neutral, minus any of the machinery used to manufacture or move the product. Pulling hydrocarbons from underground by its very nature is carbon additive.

Don’t throw them in the ocean, don’t throw them in anybody’s backyard, is the problem we now are running into China doesn’t want our trash anymore. Recycling plastics is harder than ever before. Also recycled plastics lose their elasticity which is part of their strength so only 10% of used material can be re-manufactured into new product.

headShrinker··on A city for the rich, built poorly: The construction of Hudson Yards
The real problem with Hudson Yards is that it’s walled up so it’s separate entity from the rest of the city. It completely breaks congruity with the rest of the island. This was likely a purposeful design choice similar to how Lincoln center was walled off before it’s redesign. The walls make you feel that what’s in side the walls is protected from the rest of the city as if the city and it’s people are hostile. At least that’s how it makes me feel as it dominates the only view of the city I have from my apartment window 10 blocks from it.

We aren’t a hostile people but are upset about how this was funded:

“As I reported back in 2017, records obtained by CityLab under the Freedom of Information Act reveal the gerrymandered map that Empire State used to qualify Hudson Yards for EB-5 financing. This particular TEA snakes up from the West Side and includes Central Park. (Think about that: a map of Manhattan that claims Central Park as an economically troubled area.) Beyond the park, the qualifying zone for Hudson Yards captures several census tracts in Harlem, where public housing projects boost the overall unemployment figure.” https://www.citylab.com/equity/2019/04/hudson-yards-financin...

headShrinker··on The FDA fails to adequately screen or monitor products
> the Reagan FDA removed the review process for new AIDs drugs during the 1980s epidemic

Just a quick historical correction: Reagan administration did no such thing. The FDA would not release potentially helpful drugs that were untested or unproven even as 100,000s of gay men lay dying in such a horrific way. Gay activists begged and pleaded while Reagan did literally nothing to help. He didn’t even mention the words gay or AIDS until 1986. The outbreak was in full bloom by 1983. Act Up was a grassroots organization designed in part to pressure the government to allow the use of drugs with limited track record. There was a modicum of success as AZT was approved in 1987 following Act Up protests on wall street were over 100 people were arrested

I’m curious where you heard that Reagan fast tracked AZT and similar. Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was in some ‘legit’ history books.

Source: “On March 24, 1987, 250 ACT UP members demonstrated at Wall Street and Broadway to demand greater access to experimental AIDS drugs and for a coordinated national policy to fight the disease.”

headShrinker··on Major study debunks myth that moderate drinking can be healthy
In limited quantities it can be a sleep ad. Anti-social is drinking too much. Stop conflating over drinking affects with moderate drinking affects.

> DESTROYS

Stop with the hyperbole. No it doesn’t and google doesn’t bring up good sound science, it brings up clickbait, “experts”, and tons of hearsay/case study. Real science on moderate drinking is hard to perform, because there are so many other factors at play..... such as genetics, diet, exercise, smoking, air pollution, water pollution, antibiotics, The proliferation of sugar and refined grains, the over use of pharmaceuticals, persistent inorganic compounds, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, growth hormones, and radiation. But concentrate on negative aspects of alcohol because it seems to fit your agenda. Meanwhile there are millions of happy people who have good friends, sleep well, have a great job, eat healthy, have decent monetary stream and can have a drink or two without turning in to a sloppy abusive mess. People who drink alcohol in moderation tend with live longer than abstinent sober people... how do I know that? I googled it

headShrinker··on Major study debunks myth that moderate drinking can be healthy
I get your point but like it or not alcohol is very complex and has many benefits as well as deficits. What organizations are doing now to alcohol with their studies is the equivalent of what people did to marijuana in the 40s and 50s. They decided alcohol was bad and then they went about producing propaganda and attributing science fortify their claims. In limited quantities alcohol has been shown to improve sleep, reduce stress, thin blood, and increase social behaviors. All of these are huge markers for life longevity and lower mortality. If you’re really concerned about poisons and risk factors you would look at the American diet and realize just what havoc it’s wreaking on its population, i.e. diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and heart disease. Statistically you will likely die of one of them
headShrinker··on Major study debunks myth that moderate drinking can be healthy
> and best to be avoided

In any quantity? Prove it

The problem is everything is a poison in quantity. Moderation is key with anything.

The agenda was clearly indicated. Please reread my parent post, Reduce alcohol consumption.

We consume many extremely dangerous poisons throughout the day and there is not a ton of research of the effects of those molecules. Or there is and almost no follow up action.

headShrinker··on Major study debunks myth that moderate drinking can be healthy
As I tried to point out in another thread, the WHO, AMA, AHA, etc in 2005 designated alcohol as the next target to reduce disease. Those 3-letter acronyms are funding majority negative alcohol effect study as it agrees with their literal ‘global agenda’. That’s why researchers are producing negative alcohol effect studies and why they are so popular. Researchers want to get published. It’s also clear that much of the work is meta study or simple questionnaire. In other words, much of the new negative alcohol publications aren’t based on actual science. See? No tin-foil hats required

As for this study...

> Between April 1993 and December 1998, 63 257 individuals completed an in-person interview that included questions on usual diet, demographics, height and weight, use of tobacco, usual physical activity, menstrual and reproductive history (women only), medical history, and family history of cancer. The institutional review boards at the National University of Singapore and the University of Minnesota approved this study.

They asked people a bunch of questions about their behavior and “usual diet” in actuality exact diet would be a more accurate indicator of disease precursors... diet controls so much of everyone’s lives and deaths more than any other modern daily life input. Unless they are consuming large amounts of alcohol aka heavy drinkers.

Source study: https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/circulationaha....

headShrinker··on A comparison of population cancer risks between alcohol and tobacco
If alcohol was a pill manufactured by a Pharma corporation there would be no studies on its adverse affects and doctors would revere it as a miracle drug.

15 years ago the AMA made it a Public Health Initiative to shut down alcohol consumption.

headShrinker··on HIV Is Reported Cured in a Second Patient
> The correct medical diagnosis was Gay Related Immune Deficiency

The medical “GRID” diagnosis was wrong, while “HIV” was attacking gay men, it was also attacking straight people. They were being ignored because it was eliminating gay people. Hospital staff kicked gay people out as HIV diagnoses came in. My friends held their friends in their arms without medical care as they died because a government and medical association did nothing. If gay people had rights they would have been able to have more successful monogamous relationships. If they had government assistance they could have aided in stopping the spread. For 8 years the government did nothing. Clever trick to call it GRID, then once it blooms in straight populations change the official acronym. “Oh it happens in straight people too?!” Damn right.

> Of course anyone can get AIDS, but men who have sex with men have a much higher risk of contracting than any other group with the exception of IV drug users.

headShrinker··on The Mate X is Huawei’s 5G foldable
I think you are vastly over simplifying what the iPhone was to the industry. The iPhone wasn’t just a native browser, it was also the iPod, Messaging with a full keyboard, and an intuitive integrated phone with visual voicemail. Also Apple through the iPhone freed us from being under the thumbs of our carriers and they’re terrible adware software. At the time I hated my phones so seeing the iPhone wasn’t just an easy and natural progression, it’s something I needed. A folding screen seems like engineers creating something that has no need. I don’t want it. It seems like 3-D TV “let’s do it because we can” not because it’s a good idea.
headShrinker··on Bernie Sanders Is Running for President Again
I trust Sander’s political positions over all other candidates, and if we get a good three years of Bernie and 1 year of his choice of VP, I’m ok with that. He’s clear and right about most issues and he’s right that climate change is the number 1 issue and he’s the only one saying that.
headShrinker··on Bernie Sanders Is Running for President Again
Age has little to do with a serious discussion about a viable president unless pragmatism is your centeral criterion. Clinton was the pragmatic choice... she lost. Warren and trump are old, Clinton was old.

The central criteria for choosing a president should be their choices and moral compass, a strong voice and leader, the ability to turn a movement toward generating money for the candidate and a finger on the pulse of what’s actually going on.

headShrinker··on Apple Said to Launch 16-Inch MacBook Pro with All-New Design in 2019
I’m confused because your post has almost nothing to do with the OP and Apple really never had a hardware advantage in the laptop industry as with their desktop and server offerings. As for labtops, they were never the fastest processors GPUs or RAM, never had the biggest fastest storage, always had huge compromises and we’re always expensive. Apple’s true advantage was the willingness to upset a plurality of its users by removing all but the most “necessary” parallels, slick tight design, high quality materials, and of course a simple non-MS, non-Linux OS. All of these are still Apple specific today. An added bonus, Apple always had the highest resale and they still do.
