Doesn't work quite the same way in reverse though. "Every energy corporation deserves to be paid for their pillaging of the earths resources." Failure to pay for said pillaging has slightly different results.

he_is_legend··on Programs are dead, and JavaScript has killed them
Try doing this on a 5 year old project. You'll very likely end up in dependency hell.

There is a solution though - use of nvm and .nvmrc (to control the version of node and npm that you use), and use of npm ci (which installs packages as they were at the time, rather than installing newer versions than specified in package-lock.json (because too many devs rarely ever pin versions) instead of npm install / npm i).

nvm (Node Version manager): https://github.com/nvm-sh/nvm npm ci: https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/v6/commands/npm-ci

he_is_legend··on Tell HN: Tired of Hearing about ChatGPT
Almost the entire AI / ML landscape is still stuck on the pretense of: "lets feed it a trillion pieces of data, correct the most obvious defects, and call it a day", which leads to some terrific results, but mostly really poor and low quality results. It is fast becoming the buzzfeed of software. Generated images are full of obvious glitches. Chats with AI are full of logical mistakes and very weird changes of topic. Generated text is a lot of the time borderline unreadable. What exactly is the end goal here? Release early, release often, release all hopes of being taken seriously?
he_is_legend··on Norway: Landlines will no longer be supported
A landline will usually still work when there is a power outage - VOIP and fibre not so much.
he_is_legend··on A few tech startup CEOs in my country had started saying Elon's methods are fine
Maybe I am posting on the wrong forum, but a lot of people seem to have this magical notion that CEOs make everything in a company happen. Elon single-handedly made those rockets land on a raft in the ocean. Elon re-invented electrical cars all by himself. Elon made a Mars habitation dream possible. Except Elon did none of those things. He was the CEO of companies whose staff did those things, following his vision. Staff. People. It always takes a team. The team of people that he is currently attempting to grind into dust at Twitter.
he_is_legend··on Ask HN: What made you finally grok Git?
The trick(s) to git is not using `git add -A`, and being diligent (as in checking before you commit) about the changes that you are committing. Only add and commit what is relevant to the task that you are working on. But it's even simpler than that. Before you commit anything, check what you are about to commit. Is it what you expected? Is it relevant? Does it work? Has it been tested? Is it likely to pass a code review?

he_is_legend··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
Is that legally speaking? Ethically speaking? Or financially speaking?

he_is_legend··on Galaxy S23 will be equipped with 200-megapixel camera
> Android One is a family of third-party Android smartphones promoted by Google. In comparison to many third-party Android devices, which ship with a manufacturer's customized user interface and bundled apps, these devices run near-stock versions of Android with limited modifications, and a focus on Google services (although they may still feature software enhancements to support the features of included hardware, such as cameras)

See https://www.android.com/one/ and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_One

he_is_legend··on Ask HN: Bluetooth kinda sucks. Why don't we have something better?
> if I go downstairs with my work laptop then I'm going going to drape an ethernet cable across my living room just so my connection is 1 Gbps still instead of 400+ Mbps

Are you missing the word "not" in there somewhere? Or being really obtuse? Your comment makes little sense as is. Initially you encourage hard wired unmoving appliances, but then also get behind draping a cable across a room to make sure movable appliances also get the best possible bandwidth?

Many of those farms are exporting their produce to foreign countries. This includes growing alfalfa in California, and exporting it to Saudi Arabia (where the monarchy has set a policy of growing less alfalfa, wheat and corn to reduce pumping of groundwater from the depleted aquifers of the Arabian Peninsula). So essentially they are exporting water from one desert to another via the medium of alfaalfa.

he_is_legend··on Jack Dorsey on his “most important contribution to the internet”
Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me - so i put various bits of my preferences and identity data into a personal data silo, and use that data silo to connect to various web services. Next thing you know each service will add a set of permissions which they can request and you can allow or deny and thus "keep you safe", until after a while every service starts asking for more and more permissions and more and more of your personal data. And they've already got you locked in by storing all your emails or photos or whatever, so you agree and they just get all your data. And nothing was solved.

The answer to walled-garden internet institutions isn't amalgamating all your personal data into one database so the walled-garden vendors can more easily grab that data. It's decentralisation and diversity (as in more choice) of vendor. Once again a Silicon Valley / venture capitalist darling fails to understand what data privacy means, and just bundle up their latest data grab in a shiny marketing package.
