Being a CTO was so boring...

hcrean··on How to (and how not to) design REST APIs
They are attempting to argue that 404 is ambiguous, so we should avoid it. They do not to my eyes meaningfully highlight a replacement outside of some very specific cases.

I strongly disagree with this stance as I don't think 404 is ambiguous at all. Although it would be useful to know at what point in the broader hierarchy of a specific resource requested the unavailability starts: Ultimately 404 just means the specific 'tip of the spear' resource requested is not found.

hcrean··on Aftershock of the New: Woodblock Prints of Post-Disaster Tokyo (1928–32)
Those are all examples of building from scratch; not rebuilding, such as after an earthquake or a sinkhole or mudslide... etc
hcrean··on Aftershock of the New: Woodblock Prints of Post-Disaster Tokyo (1928–32)
I wonder what makes the Japanese so much better at rebuilding than the western world: They repair almost everything on crazy timescales.
hcrean··on UK government surveilling social media of teaching assistants
Animal Farm taught us that the educators of the next generation wield some of the greatest power in society; It is possibly a bit naive not to expect some level of automated surveillance directed towards them.

A social media movement sweeping though the education system could potentially be just as destructive to society as an economic cold war or a poor foreign policy.

hcrean··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
Unfortunately your knowledge of industrial manufacturing processes might not be as strong as you think it is. The immediate evidence to consider is that people cast their own Warhammer desktop war-gaming miniatures at home: The feature accuracy of these is much higher than the milling accuracy of cheap ARmalite knock-offs.

Please, dear God, don't anyone tell them about sand-casting...

Explanation for non-mechs: Make a shape out of wood with a chisel, push it into sand to make a void, melt Alu in a glorified BBQ, pour into sand to make a perfect replica of the wooden template. You can turn out 100 high quality "mechanical parts" in alloyed metal in the same time it takes to 3D print one in PLA.

hcrean··on Textual: Rapid Application Development framework for Python
There are many options, but Pyinstaller is in my experience the easiest one in this space.
hcrean··on What’s Wrong with the “What’s Wrong with Men” Discourse
Many men subconsciously associate talking about feelings with emotional manipulation, and emotional exploitation by people who want a different behaviour. It is rarely, starting in early childhood, about helping the person.

Without emotional discourse the social rules that people need to follow are radically more simple.

hcrean··on Thermochromic Breadboard
That is a clever idea, but I tend to find overheating is too sudden to notice from colour changes.
hcrean··on PyPI will require 2FA by the end of 2023
python3 -c "import pyotp ; print(pyotp.TOTP(\"<My secret token>\".lower()).now())"

This code snippet can be used for standard TOTP 2FA

hcrean··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Pi for audio frequencies is lovely and square, Pi at radio frequencies has distinct rise and fall and "just taking a moment to think about it" segments.

A spectrum analyser has probes!?!? This might be where I am going wrong... But the bench scope is largely in agreement about the distinct phases of a cycle at RF freq.

hcrean··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Pico caps and appropriate impedance miss-match can be used to round-off square waves.

But yes, if you look at high-speed Pi GPIO with a Rigol it looks more like an EKG readout than the thing you might see on a logic analyser. Smoothing it enough to feed a line-amp is very lossy.

hcrean··on OpenAI’s policies hinder reproducible research on language models
I think right here we have an example AI reproducibility problem. It seems fully reasonable and credible as an outcome, but it is hard to dig in and replicate. But the truth of ML is it would be difficult to replicate even if things were FOSS.
hcrean··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
It sort of does: Whereas normally the person operating the camera would immediately identify the neighbour's Bombay Black 'Mr. Pickles'; now we have some fuzzy footage being sold to the tabloids that might be a puma roaming the wolds of north Wales... Or the aerial equivalent.
hcrean··on As a US Navy fighter pilot, I witnessed unidentified anomalous phenomena
There is a genuinely terrifying explanation that fits all of the data-points: That something about routine exposure to the physical effects of flying military jets effects a pilot's perceptual accuracy.

This is also definitely something that would be on the hush rota; if your seasoned missile operator just reported overtaking Santa's sleigh at Mach something, it wouldn't inspire much confidence in either the new recruits or the public.

Combine that with targeting systems that likely have a strong false-positive-bias and you have a recipe for Earth having been visited by little green men.

hcrean··on Digitec Galaxus now displays warranty score and return rate
Also a thing in parts of rural England. I have a walking route that takes me via ~12 of these stalls because they are the ones that sell local Honey. All are money-in-the-tin operations.
hcrean··on Written by GPT or Human?
If it is wrong (looks right, but is unsound) it is likely written by GPT. If it is wrong (looks right, but is unsound) it is likely written by a Human.

Tough call...

hcrean··on Routine vaccinations drop among U.S. kindergartners for the third year in a row
It is almost unperceivable to people who truly have faith, that other might not believe in the same higher authority as them.

This is a story as old as time.

hcrean··on Voxengo developer finds math is engineered

hcrean··on Logic Is a Special Case
A DevOps engineer at a company I used to work for was very unhappy at the way management handled the day to day running of certain parts of the job. When he raised his feelings about it he was told that it was unprofessional to bring it up or talk about how he felt. Not long after this he left the company, and they were unable to successfully recruit a new DevOps person for about two years; at which point a system that had not been patched in that time was hacked, and the company is no longer with us.

Why is this Victorian Workhouse idea of suffering in silence considered professionalism? If professional is defined as the thing that brings the most success to the business unit or company, surely failing to discuss feelings in the workplace is the antithesis of professional.

hcrean··on Fosshost Is Shutting Down
You would choose a company that thinks Open Source is "literally cancer"[1] to support your FOSS project, rather than an unknown person: You need more faith in humanity.

Is Github more stable as a platform, sure. Does Github ban a higher percentage of projects than are effected by unreliable 3rd parties, unquestionably!

My own personal experience is that about 5% of the FOSS projects I have hosted on Github have received a DCMA takedown notice, normally from people trying to monetize in the same domain. (Including a website for a local sports club and an Android app for learning fingering of an obscure musical instrument). Less than 0.3% of all FOSS projects I have hosted elsewhere have received a S&D or DCMA or any equivalent...

hcrean··on Ask HN: How's the job hunt going? (For those laid off)
Are you choosing the right environments to work in? What do you find is the reason for instability in employment?
hcrean··on Where has the passive radar code gone?
Engineers are people who are driven to find and implement solutions. Sadly we don't always agree with the correctness of the chosen solutions.
hcrean··on Ask HN: Comment here about whatever you're passionate about at the moment
As a Yorkshireman: We understand and acknowledge that people do not all have good taste when it comes to tea. We therefore either assume you don't want to kick anything off (start a fight over tea), or that you acknowledge and are working on your failings in the tea department...

hcrean··on Microsoft bakes a VPN into Edge and turns it on
It is all fun and games until one of the downloads from your site picks up malware in transit and the user goes "why did this web admin infect my computer? Sue!"

This genuinely happens a lot in the 2020s.
