hcks··on Google to invest up to $2B in Anthropic
It’s not crazy money, it’s just workers getting a fairer compensation
hcks··on Google to invest up to $2B in Anthropic
Google doesn’t pay very well, actually
hcks··on My Left Kidney
The whole benefits of kidney donation to a stranger comes down to an effective donation of $10,000 using the same logic.

How is it effective when he could have probably raised 2 times that amount by working in place

hcks··on Toxicological analyses reveal the use of cannabis in Milan in the 1600's
Or maybe it’s just a dumb drug that stinks and makes you into a schizo?
hcks··on People who made the original Super Mario Bros shipped Wonder 38 years later
I mean they’ve been shipping the same game every year for all this time too
hcks··on People who made the original Super Mario Bros shipped Wonder 38 years later
Yes, when I think small not at all overrated game studio producing very original gameplays I really think Nintendo
hcks··on Psychedelic Mushrooms Hit the Market in Oregon
There’s a bunch of fake studies that won’t replicate in 20 years when we’ll try to understand why we started frying peoples brain
hcks··on Psychedelic Mushrooms Hit the Market in Oregon
1/ please stop deterring people from undertaking the medical treatment recommended by professionals

2/ there is increasing evidence that psychedelic therapies for mental illness were all based on hype and don’t actually perform any better or at all

hcks··on We're entering a pretty strong El Niño
The whole cringe around the name of the thing is enough to know it’s probably not real in any practical sense
hcks··on Engineering Statistics Handbook (2012)
Any other recommendation with the same focus?
hcks··on The C4 model for visualising software architecture (2017)
In my experience diagrams that are pedestrian enough to be automatically generated from the codebase don’t add much value
hcks··on It's easy to screw up on breaking news but you have to admit when you do
This doesn’t make any sense.
hcks··on Ketamine's effect on depression may hinge on hope
This is insane, people are really unwilling to let go the idea that illegal psychoactive drugs may have any beneficial effects for depression.
hcks··on Interviews in the Age of AI: Ditch Leetcode – Try Code Reviews Instead
I don’t get why people always hate on leetcodes.

Anyone can train and get good at it, it makes interviews short and not time consuming, it’s a standard accros industry so you can focus on studying it and not have to read one book for each company you apply to.

What would be a better alternative? Hiring based on connections? Take home assignments that takes 15 hours to complete? Domain specific knowledge grilling?

hcks··on Interviews in the Age of AI: Ditch Leetcode – Try Code Reviews Instead
meetings, design doc reviews, capacity plannings and allocations and alignments are not supposed to be used as ways to hide mediocrity
hcks··on Interviews in the Age of AI: Ditch Leetcode – Try Code Reviews Instead
Google, Meta, Apple, OpenAI, Citadel are incompetent organisations. Wow lads
hcks··on Interviews in the Age of AI: Ditch Leetcode – Try Code Reviews Instead
It’s just a proxy measure for IQ really. They could have handed out Ravens matrices and got better outcomes prediction.
hcks··on C Is Not a Low-level Language (2018)
Funny how the top comment on "hacker" news is an *unsubstantial* comment about how, actually, TFA is wrong.

Even worse, adding a comment on how actually you shouldn’t be curious and understand how things really work.

hcks··on Jobs working with the Rust programming language. No crypto
I mean when you pick a job based on the language you’ll use and it’s the same language crypto companies love you have to ask yourself some questions (esp if you hate crypto)
hcks··on Why aren't there more 80% jobs?
Wages in the USA have not stagnated, actually
hcks··on Why aren't there more 80% jobs?
1/ each additional employee comes with additional costs: management, communication, onboarding, HR, office space, etc..

2/ People in a 40 hours contract usually work more than that. Employers can try to seek out employees that don’t mind working more than paid for.

3/ People who’d look for 80% jobs are (from employers perspective adversely) selected to be people that will monitor their hours worked and not give away their time for free.

hcks··on EU member states still cannot agree about end-to-end encryption
I wish euros could explain to me why they speak of "their data" as if that was their souls
hcks··on 'Terminating Internet Access over Piracy Claims Is Drastic and Overbroad'
Please explain how enforcing their right to be paid for what they sell is destroying the internet
hcks··on Why do so many people think they are in a bullshit job?
> ‘I was recently able to charge around twelve thousand pounds to write a two-page report for a pharmaceutical client to present during a global strategy meeting,’ he said. ‘The report wasn’t used in the end because they didn’t manage to get to that agenda point.

12k is approximately nothing to a multinational firm.

The feeling of bullshitness and alienation from corporate workers stems from the difference between what their time is worth to themselves (subjectively a lot, you only live once, etc) and what it’s worth to their employer (in $, nearly nothing to a multinational).

hcks··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
1.5% chance of becoming a billionaire per try is good odds, actually. Also doesn’t take into account all the outcomes you become merely a millionaire (likely over 5% in the case of YC?)
hcks··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
Im pretty sure the 500k employee at Google is vastly vastly more free to leave his desk than the small business owner making that much.
hcks··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
The "FAANG bubble" itself employs like 100k engineers and many many more startups and Fortune 500 companies pay >90% as much.
hcks··on Finding a Tech Job Is Still a Nightmare
Yes yes I’m a plowing ox, put a collar on me and let me pull the heavy heavy weights for my masters.
hcks··on Personalized learning can feel isolating. Whole class learning can feel personal
Tankies getting mad when someone spends 0.1% of the annual public education budget to try something out.
hcks··on We’ll call it AI to sell it, machine learning to build it
What's the point of this comment seriously.

Making universal function approximators is trivial. It's not where the value lies.
