hcho··on Alternative lightweight UI library to modern day frameworks
I work on such doms regularly. A virtually paginated tablewould render around 100 rows. 20 columns means rendering 2K vnodes for the plainest of cells. If a few of those columns render small charts it can easily add upto 100k.
hcho··on Erdoğan’s censorship now targeting media outlets in Europe
The conqueror and conquered relationship has been about the 40% of aforementioned millennium.

The rest they have been allies, mercenaries, enemies, trading partners, etc...

It's far more nuanced than a single relationship type.

hcho··on Erdoğan’s censorship now targeting media outlets in Europe
They share food, words, customs and attitudes. That's the common heritage.

Joining Ottoman empire is just a non sequitur.

hcho··on Erdoğan’s censorship now targeting media outlets in Europe
They lived in close proximity for a good part of a millennium. Do you think they haven't influenced each other?
hcho··on Archaeologists uncover ancient street food shop in Pompeii
That does not ring true. Crusades were mostly forgotten until the rise of Arab and Turkish nationalisms. They were then appropriated into nationhood folklore.
hcho··on Ask HN: What programming design pattern book has had the biggest impact on you?
Exactly. What's a monad, if not a design pattern.
hcho··on For the first time in Europe, registrations for EVs overtook diesel
I bet a lot of the owners are parents of toddlers. Getting a child in an out of a childseat is a great deal easier with SUVs. The extra cost in fuel is negligible for most people because they don't do mega miles.
hcho··on Symbian Won
The market have shifted. Before iphone, everyone was trying to build the smalles phone possible. Jobs convinced the world for brick sized devices and SymbianOS lost its USP - doing a lot on small batteriess. Had there been a wearables market back then, it could have had a second lease of life.
hcho··on Ghoti
That's not true I am afraid. Turkish borrows majority of it's vocabulary from Arabic, Persian, French and English. Wovels in those loan words never match the sounds. For example the word "hala" can either mean "aunt" or "still" depending on how long you sound the first a.
hcho··on Ask HN: What interesting stuff are you browsing?
The first wovel in "deuce" is the closest English comes to that sound.
hcho··on Programmers Should Plan for Lower Pay?
What makes you think people haven't switched?
hcho··on The Rise of the Electric Scooter
Mopeds are sub 50cc motorized bicycles though.
hcho··on Ask HN: AWS Uses Angular.js with React
Angular 1.x has this dreadful thing called digest cycle. Long and short of it, the rendering performance degrades proportionally with the number of things Angular has to watch for changes.

Some people retrofitted busier parts of their apps with react views to work around that. There are even a frw angular directives for that out there.

hcho··on Almost every speed limit is too low (2017)
Not a word about carrying capacity of junctions, exits, etc... Safety is a secondary concern when it comes to speed limits.
hcho··on They Were Promised Coding Jobs in Appalachia
Indeed. Not much difference between, say London and NYC. SV is an outlier, even with in US.
hcho··on They Were Promised Coding Jobs in Appalachia
Is there any location that comes close to SV?
hcho··on They Were Promised Coding Jobs in Appalachia
At will employment in UK pays compareable to US.
hcho··on To ORM or Not to ORM
Doesn't alchemy have an execute method, to which you can pass a raw sql?
hcho··on Ask HN: What are your go-to checklists?
Handkerchief
hcho··on Insurance market for football evaporating, causing major threat for NFL
I'd like to see some data on that.
hcho··on Pictures from the Eastern Bloc in the 80s
Parts of Poland were under Prussian rule and had some accumulation of industry, infrastructure and expertise. Russia was an agrarian country before communism.
hcho··on Ask HN: What makes great real-time, turn-by-turn navigation software?
Be "locale" aware. All the navigation software insist on using street names. In the UK that doesn't help as street name signs are generally located in the street. By the time you can see the sign, it's too late to make a turn.
hcho··on And Monads for All: The State Monad
Chaining is as old as hills and can be used to avoid callback hells. What monads are really is a type respecting chainable object with 3 methods: value, map and then.
hcho··on Scooters are taking cars off the road, a survey says
I do not feel safe sharing a bike path with a guy with zero handling skills on a heavy ass bike. What is so hard to get?
hcho··on Scooters are taking cars off the road, a survey says
Both of which are quite a bit incovinient than flipping a switch. Hats off to them indeed but an argument for unlimited electric power based on them is a bit rubbish.
hcho··on Scooters are taking cars off the road, a survey says
You need to get up that hill first, which prevents most of those who didn't do their time on the saddle to get to higher speeds.
hcho··on Bullshit asymmetry principle
Turkish has a very similar proverb. I wonder if it is a literal translation.
hcho··on Ask HN: Why this bloat in Angular?
Because disk space is cheap.
hcho··on White label opportunities for a solopreneur?
I wouldn't touch profit sharing with a 10 foot pole. You'd be surprised by how creative they can get at inflating expenses.
hcho··on Ask HN: How would you monetise a social network without ads?
Snapchat meets Dropbox. Every post and upload gets deleted after a while. If the OP wants to keep them alive after that, they need to pay.
