hcho··on North American English Dialects
The century old central media establishment stopped pushing a single dialect decades ago. There's no accepted dialect.
hcho··on Toyota plug-in hybrids to offer 124-mile electric-only range
120 miles of urban driving? Are you a taxi driver?
hcho··on New industries come from crazy people (2021)
I think you are underestimating how bad rest of the world had it during those years. UK for example was still rationing food.
hcho··on Ask HN: Am I missing something (modern webdev)?
> What's wrong with building simple web applications that get things done and don't require build tools, secondary (or tertiary) languages or meta-languages (like SCSS, ERB, JSX, Jade, etc)?

Successful projects have a tendency to stop being simple as time goes by. Users start asking for more features, scaling issues crop up, etc, etc.

hcho··on Niches are overrated
Some say it's the reason religions pop up.
hcho··on Choose your status game wisely
white anglo-saxon protestant. old money types in US context.
hcho··on Ask HN: What Roles/Skills Do You Struggle to Hire For?
I wonder if something is getting lost in translation. With no particular order:

Hearing the word ideation would cause an allergic in people who are sensitive against Americanisms.

British are also notorius for their indirect way of expressing their thoughts and feelings. Instead of saying they do not believe in your idea or your ability to execute it, they'd prefer to use compensation as a get out.

hcho··on Agriculture gave rise to one of world’s most mysterious language families
Multiple layers of creolization is the most likely explanation of common grammatic features and distinct vocabularies.

There's a language called Gagauz, spoken in Moldova. It has a Turkic vocabulary and Indo-European grammar. It was, in its infancy, likely to be a Romanian substrate, Cuman superstrate creole.

An Proto Altaic substrate with various superstrates must have played out quite a few times.

hcho··on The Gunpowder Plot
Former. The latter became a thing after V for Vendetta.
hcho··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
I wouldn't be surprised if most of those states have laws for unfair dismissal as well. Companies develop an internal process to cover their backs for such eventualities. Running that process to the end is the costly bit.
hcho··on Why not generate React code from Figma? (a.k.a. why did PageDraw YC18 fail?)
I suspect, genarating components from designs is a pain point for narrow subsection of companies which use React. I also suspect those which have this problem are not in a place to pay. Startups with limited runways, agencies with shoestring budgets are not the most lucrative.
hcho··on A journey through the troubled former Yugoslavia
So the Catholic-Orthodox secterianism is due to Islamist expansion. Gotcha.
hcho··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
Some species gravitate towards an r selection stategy when the living conditions are unfavourable. It might well be encoded in our lizard brains.
hcho··on Proposed acquisition of ARM Limited by NVIDIA: public interest intervention
It has to be said the current HMG is radically different than the previous one.
hcho··on Adding is favoured over subtracting in problem solving
Are you maybe thinking about cranksets? All it takes to remove a pedal from the crank is an adjustable spanner.
hcho··on Adding is favoured over subtracting in problem solving
Or just remove the pedals and tape one of the cranks to the chain stay so they don't spin and catch the trousers. Did this with my daughter's bike and it held up fine for the month she pootled on it until she was ready to pedal.
hcho··on Adding is favoured over subtracting in problem solving
I switch between toe clips(for commuting) and cleats(for longer rides) at least once a month. Why would you need to handle the chain? Pedals are attached to cranks.
hcho··on Adding is favoured over subtracting in problem solving
Eh? They are bolted on with screws and get regulary replaced. It's not any difficult than removing training wheels.
hcho··on Ask HN: Do algorithmic coding problems efficiently reduce false negatives?
That would still tell me something about the candidate. That they don't double check their assumptions is not a great sign.

For the record I always encourage candidates to start with the simplest solution and tell them we can then chat about improvements after we get the basics right.

hcho··on Ask HN: Do algorithmic coding problems efficiently reduce false negatives?
I would not call adding two binary numbers algorithmic.

Having candidates write code is always a good filter. You'd be surprised by the amount of people who can't write a nested loop with a decade of experience under their belt.

hcho··on A forgotten medieval fruit with a vulgar name
Mespilon is the original Greek name, which made its way to Latin too. It might be sounding alien to you because of the sound changes.
hcho··on A forgotten medieval fruit with a vulgar name
The word is actually of Greek origin. Who spread it is difficult to tell.
hcho··on Annie of Annie's Mac and Cheese
We have kettles and water boils in about 2 mins.
hcho··on Egypt prepares to start move to new capital, away from the chaos of Cairo
I appreciate the richness you bring to inference.
hcho··on Egypt prepares to start move to new capital, away from the chaos of Cairo
They would be beholden to political machinations which get them elected and not do a very good job at it.

There are a lot of things with HoL but being unelected is not one of them.

hcho··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
Not during at least three quarters of the mentioned period and not for every location even today.
hcho··on Drivers locked out of their cars at Royston Tesco
None of the cars I owned had this. I hadn't fiddled with the rented cars keys so those might have had it.
hcho··on Drivers locked out of their cars at Royston Tesco
None of the cars I have driven in the last decade had physical keys. Owned a Nissan, Mercedes and Toyota, rented various BMWs, Peugeots etc...
hcho··on The Viking Invasion of Leicestershire (2012)
Are they not making British Empire shows?
hcho··on AstraZeneca/EU contract
And yet British have James Dyson, Richard Branson and so on...

Old money vs new miney strife is an age old thing and I can assure you none of the tech barons is rubbing shoulders with former barons let alone American gentry.
