haywirez··on Dropping Acid
Nice to see this topic up here! Check out Acid Defender, a super fun 303 web audio game I came across a few days ago:

haywirez··on Show HN: Predict how well people will react to your writing
I tested it quickly with a draft text and found it useful, but only for changing a few single words. Hemingway[0] is a tool along the same line that checks readability levels, maybe combine the approaches to address things at sentence levels too?

Is there an English primer on how to build WeChat apps? What's involved?
haywirez··on End of Service for the Weather Underground API
Anybody knows a good, worldwide weather "niceness" rating API with a free tier? The only scoring system I found was the Hugo Poppe method[0], but seems like I'd have to implement it myself.

haywirez··on Globally, Almost Four Out of Ten Music Consumers Are Pirates
Similar experience. I did the blind tests as well, and surprisingly often chose 320 kbps mp3s that I thought were FLACs because they sounded "crisper" (I mostly listen to electronic club tunes). I did and also witnessed other DJs play out tracks I know for sure were 192kbps mp3s on huge sound systems (sadly no other version ever exported), the place went 100% wild because it's all about the music in the end...that said, would be great to ditch mp3s for OPUS in streaming and have catalogues in FLAC/AIFF.

Edit: a LOT if not most of new music at this point contains samples ripped from Youtube. Something to consider also.

haywirez··on Show HN: A website that converts any IPFS file to HLS and reups it to IPFS
Don't use bull, use NATS[1] - happy with it so far with the Node SDK.

haywirez··on Show HN: A website that converts any IPFS file to HLS and reups it to IPFS
What did you end up using for queueing conversion jobs?
haywirez··on The Rise and Contentious Fork of RSS
This is already solved by HLS - all you'd need is a .m3u8 file in the feed. Industry insistence on DRM issues is what's preventing it from taking off, but "indies" could do it.
haywirez··on The Rise and Contentious Fork of RSS
Tangentially, this is also a great argument in music business discussions against the finality of Spotify, Youtube and other centralized streaming platforms. People are doing just fine consuming podcast RSS feeds using players when the UX is smooth; there's no reason why that couldn't be the case for music or other verticals in general (direct artist-to-fan).
haywirez··on The danger of target=_blank and opener
Isn't nofollow largely ignored by ranking algorithms? Seems like those links were still giving some link juice even a decade ago.

No, the point is that the API couldn't be used for this. So it automates a browser.

haywirez··on Wikimedia warns EU copyright reform threatens the ‘vibrant free web’
I feel like there isn't enough focus on this point - mandating extra elements (filters) inside an otherwise direct line of communication is always a bad idea. The best case scenario you get is the telephone game...
haywirez··on A treasure trove of skate culture is being saved
Fantastic to see this on the front page! Thought about this yesterday (while skating), skateboarding is really THE best sport... You're competing with yourself while generating more fun, discovery and advancement for all. Total opposite of zero sum. The best are those magic sessions when everybody gets hyped off each other and lands crazy tricks far above their usual skill. Hope the kickstarter succeeds:

haywirez··on Why assessing the state of the world is harder than it sounds
Yugoslavia massively propped itself up economically by allowing its citizens to work in Western countries and effectively siphoned wealth home. Some 700.000 worked in West Germany alone[0]. It would have collapsed much earlier without piggybacking post-WWII Western economies...

"By 1988 emigrant remittances to Yugoslavia totaled over $4.5 billion (USD), and by 1989 remittances were $6.2 billion (USD), which amounted to over 19% of the world's total. A large portion of those remittances came from Yugoslav professional and skilled workers employed by Yugoslav engineering and construction firms with contracts abroad, including large infrastructure projects in the Middle East, Africa and Europe."[1]

haywirez··on Vaporwave’s Mini-Boom of Floppy Disk Releases
The main thing I miss is the tactile feedback of seeking through tracks and DJ sets with a walkman. If I held the buttons down only halfway pressed, the output would remain patched in to the headphones and I could hear the pitched up scrubbing sound. Also - when the batteries were dying, it would still play for about an hour, but progressively slower until it finally stopped.

I'm bringing this back to the web for sure.

haywirez··on EU copyright law proposal rejected
As a side note, I've spent quite some time calling the offices and sending individually personalised e-mails to most of the PPE abstain voters. I guess normally they would've voted in favour. Maybe it's possible to have some small effect in the end?

A special award goes to a Slovenian NGO for making this hilarious vote tracking page:

haywirez··on Show HN: B2blaze – A Backblaze B2 library for Python
I'm trying to use it as an S3 replacement for audio content delivery - seems slow and laggy unfortunately. Uploads also fail frequently enough. I don't know if CDNs would make a big difference. (Europe)

Edit: lack of webhooks or something similar for doing follow-up after successful uploads is also irritating.

Article 13 vote is tomorrow - there's still time to contact MEPs and voice your opinion. Ask them[0] to support the "Reda compromises" [1]

haywirez··on YouTube’s Piracy Filter Blocks MIT Courses, Blender Videos, and More
As you might know, this is related to the disastrous EU copyright reform directive proposal that would mandate such filters put in place everywhere. Please don't be complacent, it's very important to do something about this.

At risk of repeating my comment[0] from 3 days ago, I'd like to appeal to you to contact the MEPs that will vote on Wednesday in the EU's JURI committee. This was the first time I called politicians' offices to voice my opinion. The assistants were shocked that a private person actually bothered to do so and seemed quite humbled - I could hear the change in the tone of their voice when they realised an ordinary citizen is calling. I think it's a lot more effective than the 1000s of e-mails piling up in their spam folders.

Please help out to make sure this directive proposal is voted against on Wednesday by the majority of the JURI committee. List of Twitter handles of reportedly yet undecided MEPs:

haywirez··on The Soon-To-Be-Extinct Embedded Software Engineer
Seems like the opposite, there's a smaller revolution going on in audio and music tech. Several big software names are about to start manufacturing their own dedicated hardware devices running DAWs.
haywirez··on Twitter delays shutdown of legacy APIs as it launches a replacement
Can someone give a short summary of the changes and what will be axed? From a quick look, follower counts should still be easy to retrieve from the free tier, right?
haywirez··on Young Chinese are sick of working long hours
I believe you shouldn't "work" more than 20-24 hours a week period, especially if you have your own projects or other systemic pursuits.
haywirez··on 'Google go home': the Berlin neighbourhood fighting off a tech giant
Not only Brexit escapees but from all over the periphery - it felt like half of Portugal, Italy and Greece was in Amsterdam. Same here in Berlin.
haywirez··on 'Google go home': the Berlin neighbourhood fighting off a tech giant
I live right in the middle of this and have been been collecting photos of posters and other relics - which I always promptly send to my friend now working at Google (elsewhere). The neighbourhood is definitely changing. A key fact is that the protests stem from the anarchist / squatter scene that is based literally next block.
haywirez··on The rise of the pointless job
I recently visited and totally noticed a lot of minders, caretakers and other seemingly unnecessary jobs, mostly carried out by retirement-age employees or retired volunteers[0]. It was weird but seemed to make sense from a societal perspective, quite heartwarming.
