We are a tiny dev team using Unity on a non-gaming project and we basically have to dedicate 2-4 weeks of the year to updating Unity and all the mess that it entails. But if you don't update then you have to spend even more time the next year catching up. Then we end up being too scared to use their new features cause they aren't supported well or cause bugs. Its lose-lose.

I'd add this the lack of a solid 3rd party developer ecosystem on their Asset Store. The fact that they don't have a subscription model for assets or any support for managing per-seat licenses is ridiculous and is the direct cause of multiple popular assets ending support. It doesn't make sense economically to sell any kind of service on their store.

Yet the support for it still sucks. I spent a few hours trying to set it up the other day and still couldn't get it working. (Unity developer of 6 years here). Maybe I just had one setting wrong.. but this shouldn't be that hard to anybody, and as rightly Garry points out its not necessarily a lack of documentation but the fact that the documentation is so out of date OR correct but only with one unique combination of versions from 2 years ago.

I found the 2nd & 3rd books of The Three Body Problem series to be much, much better than the 1st. IMO the 1st is just a bit of pretext for the real story of the series.

This is news in general. If it's not "new" it's not "news".

I dislike FB as much as the next dev here, but surely it's a widely accepted (and beneficial) practice that employees have special privileges in the apps they build. Imagine using this argument to say that Facebook couldn't shut down a page/group/account.

Using bad arguments is rarely an effective way to get what you want.

I'm not sure what difference it makes but it was actually Google, not Google Ventures, that made the investment.

Yes it's absolutely deliberate. He's been using the term specifically a lot lately.

How would AR make this more interactive? I haven't seen one AR device with an interaction model as good as VR. I also don't know why you'd want to set the real world while visualizing data. Maybe so you could interact with it with other people IRL that are also wearing AR headsets?

The comment was about underwhelming _sales_ of VR, not the opinion of current VR as an experience. To that point, I completely agree that PSVR is underwhelming and a complete vomit comet. Spend a few hours with the Rift or Vive playing quality content and based on my experience theres a high chance you'll change your mind. I show VR to a lot of new people, gamers and non-gamers alike, and very rarely do people come away with anything but utter awe. Its not uncommon to show somebody an experience like Tilt Brush have them spend 30 mins+ exploring it.

With risk of derailing this thread: As somebody in the industry I don't think the sales have been underwhelming. I'd say they are almost spot on with what people in the know were expecting, and higher than expected on mobile. People that were expecting CV1 to be the iPhone of VR were irrational.

Since when does augmented reality only annotate the world? This seems to be a meme spread by Google Glass, which wasn't even augmented reality since it didn't use reality in any way.

Unfortunately this isn't the case. It's just pure VR.

It's an actual term to decribe an entire spectrum of augmented to virtual reality. It's an incredibly confusing term to brand a product that very clearly falls on a specific part of that spectrum.

People also fling critique at Magic Leap for the same problem, since it is very clearly an AR device.

Yes, it is the case, the digital nomad scene is illegal in most (all?) countries. The plus side is nobody knows what you're doing and typically you don't have any money going through Thai bank accounts. There have even been rare examples of co-working spaces being raided.

In reality, it's a non-issue for the reasons above.
