hatenberg··on 15-Fold increase in solar thermoelectric generator performance
It’s explicitly part of Chinese science and technology strategy to think outside the box and it’s what’s pushing them forward on areas like semiconductors as well.

Given the massive advantage in talent they’ve built up while the Us reverts to Drill Baby Drill we know how this ends.

Eventually the Us with push for atmospheric dimming to “fix” the negative externalities of their approach which had the nice side effect of degrading solar ….

Big Tech: We shouldn’t pay, each individual piece of content is worth basically nothing.

Also Big Tech: We added 300.000.000 users worth of GTM because we trained in the 10 specific anime movies of Studio Ghibli and are selling their style.

hatenberg··on Zuckerberg approved training Llama on LibGen [pdf]
Nah it’s just that Zuck watched the Barbie movie and realized Soace Karen was getting entirely too much limelight and declared a Year of Masculinity
hatenberg··on Does current AI represent a dead end?
False equivalence. Humans fail in predictable ways that can be mitigated though process and training.

Try training an LLM.

hatenberg··on Does current AI represent a dead end?
Even with RAG you’re bounded at some 93%, it’s not a panacea.

hatenberg··on Alignment faking in large language models
This is a classic.

We put a human mask on a machine and are now explaining it’s apparent refusal to act like a human with human traits like deception.

It’s so insulting you have to wonder if they are using an LLM to come up with such obvious narrative shaping.

hatenberg··on Tesla is looking to hire a team to remotely control its 'self-driving' robotaxis
Gotta love a new age of slavery where human drones in the colonies are serving us without us having to look into their faces.

Now the anti immigrant push makes perfect sense, it’s priming demand for the slave labor matrix

The plan was regulatory capture and defanging. It worked.

American's still very much buy into the super-villain complex regarding Russia drilled into them over the decades.

Yes, Putin does all kind of shit, but this ... please, the national security interest card from copyright holders has been an evergreen.

I love that this perspective completely misses the point in the light of GenAI, the greatest appropriation of all human creation by large american tech companies, destroying untold commercialisation.

Can't have one discusson without the other.

hatenberg··on Timothy Snyder on How the Collapse of the Soviet Union Took America by Surprise
Singapore has a great coat of paint over its economic system so westerners think it’s pure capitalism but that’s a mirage.

- The majority of locals work directly (PSD, Government, Education) or indirectly (Temasek / GIC owned entities like CapitalLand, Surbana, Singapore Airlines, the three local banks, etc.

- 80% of the property market is directly under government control (HDB), with 20% heavily regulated but “free”

I could go on, but Singapore works precisely because it’s not free for all capitalism but a tightly controlled economy that makes sure the country benefits

hatenberg··on Reports of the death of dental cavities are greatly exaggerated
Well literally any change removes money from some to give it to others. Side effect may be that people are better off (see Ozempic) but oh boy are the people losing money going to muddle the water / for investors as well as to fight the change.
hatenberg··on Concord had a dev culture of toxic positivity that halted any negative feedback
It’s not so different from mid 2000s BioWare culture (where many hits were created). Games looked like a shitshow right till the end and the general answer to these conceran was faith in “BioWare magic”.

Sure, different track record but still, this kind of mindset is the norm more often than not because of an industry where failure of the project also means loss on job - so there’s no incentive whatsoever for studio level people to flag in progress failure that may lead to a studio closing.
