hashberry··on Evidence suggests women's ovaries can grow new eggs
4. Consciousness wasn't supposed to happen as living organisms do not need it to survive and reproduce. But since humans are so successful: "It's a feature, not a bug!"
hashberry··on My husband raped two women and I had to answer for his crimes
You are not crazy. I also read this earlier this year. The URL is dated 2016-1-13 and archive.org confirms this publish date. Not sure if the listed date is a bug or deception by Vox.
hashberry··on iPhone 7
It's interesting how you didn't compare it to buying a new computer every year, but rather to cars/clothes, i.e., as a form of conspicuous consumption, a way to enhance social status. But this makes sense as this is how Apple markets its products.
hashberry··on VR on steam grew 0.06% in july and 0.02% in august
I demoed HTC Vive and wasn't impressed by the resolution. Current VR games look cartoony. Apparently realistic VR requires 8K+ resolution per eye, and VR is 10 years off from becoming "mainstream." So I'll wait. There are plenty of awesome "2D" games that look incredible in 4K in the meantime.
hashberry··on Uber Loses at Least $1.2B in First Half of 2016
Dude... Chromebook. I love Chromebooks and have them all over my house. Better than a tablet, less expensive than a laptop.
hashberry··on Uber Loses at Least $1.2B in First Half of 2016
Realistically, Uber faces major competition from Google and Apple, both who are investing heavily in self-driving cars and have easy access to loyal consumers.
hashberry··on 4 a.m. Is the Most Productive Hour
To each their own.

Most people have highly adaptable bodies and can train themselves to be a "morning person." If a person were to stay up until 2AM, there's no way they'd want to wake up at 4AM. They would therefore see themselves as a productive night owl.

hashberry··on The Hacker's Manifesto (1986)
For the full cultural effect, read it while listening to angsty MIDI music. Nirvana's Heart-Shaped Box is a perfect soundtrack:

hashberry··on My roommate received this email from a Microsoft recruiter today
So does Microsoft have good parties or not?
hashberry··on “But he does good work.”
What about "up-playing" rape? In an account of one of Jacob's assaults[0], the victim wrote: "he was rubbing my clit and rimming the edges of my vagina" and then below she wrote according to German law this is rape with a maximum of 10 years in prison. Was this torture and worse than murder?

hashberry··on A Lament for the LAN Party
It's cool to be a "nerd" if you're attractive with quirky yet charming social skills.

Portlandia did a good bit on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EMXRAWWiBw

hashberry··on How Marissa Mayer Failed to Turn Yahoo Around
"I don't think the failure is on Mayer; Yahoo was a walking zombie before she arrived."

So you're saying that no one can save Yahoo, not in the past three years, not now, and not in the future? The company is simply doomed? Sorry, I don't buy it... Mayer had a leadership position and she failed.

hashberry··on Bank of Japan Is an Estimated Top 10 Holder in 90% of the Nikkei 225
Quality of life? Japan's poverty level is at record highs.[0]

"Bookshops advertise a slew of bestsellers on how to survive on an annual income of under ¥2m ($16,700), a poverty line below which millions of Japanese now live."

hashberry··on Why Wait? the Science Behind Procrastination
I am a remote worker and suffer from chronic procrastination. This is a great article but I believe procrastination is an addiction. At times I feel like a compulsive alcoholic who sneaks off to do fun things all day instead of working. I have procrastinated as a student and my entire career and have always gotten away with it. I've been rewarded with praise of my great work, higher paying positions, and bonuses. I find myself enjoying waiting until the last minute and then using stress to help me succeed. It is a vicious cycle. I want to stop procrastinating but at the same time I like doing it.
hashberry··on A $700 Juicer for the Kitchen That Caught Silicon Valley’s Eye
I juice with the "Breville BJE200XL Compact Juice Fountain 700-Watt Juice Extractor." $99 on Amazon[0] (4.5/5 star rating out of 4,835 reviews). You don't have to chop anything--it's large enough to fit in small apples, pears, beets, etc. Carrots go straight in. Clean up is a breeze with three large easy parts (I clean while drinking my juice). It makes 25 oz of juice max versus 8 oz of this "Juice Box."

So in other words--I love juice but will be sticking with my cheapo juicer.

hashberry··on A $700 Juicer for the Kitchen That Caught Silicon Valley’s Eye
How many ounces of juice did you drink per day? $5-$8 for 8oz of juice seems pricey. That's the size of a "Short" Starbucks drink... I don't even want my coffee that size.
hashberry··on The mobile games industry is kept afloat by less than 1% of users
Interesting how you value money over time. WoW has bleed millions of gamer of their time, making them compulsively addicted, such as using incentives to make them log in every day (for "dallies" and other rewards). These gamers felt compelled/required to devote time to the game. Blizzard knew that they had to get as many subscribers as possible and keep them for as long as possible.
hashberry··on As Women Take Over a Male-Dominated Field, the Pay Drops
"Computer programming, for instance, used to be a relatively menial role done by women."

This statement requires historical perspective:[0]

"Coding implied manual labor, and mechanical translation or rote transcription ... [women] would code into machine language the higher-level mathematics developed by male scientists and engineers."

In other words, women did not do the type of "computer programming" done today. The job changed significantly as technology became easier and more accessible, and these type of "coders" became obsolete.

hashberry··on As Women Take Over a Male-Dominated Field, the Pay Drops
"The median earnings of information technology managers (mostly men) are 27 percent higher than human resources managers (mostly women)."

My company has both an IT Manager and an HR Manager, and I interact with both and they have different roles and duties. This is not a fair comparison.

hashberry··on Why Six Hours of Sleep Is as Bad as None at All
"The group who got six hours of sleep seemed to be holding their own, until around day 10 of the study."

So they were deprived of 20 hours of sleep (based on the 8 hour control group). The "no sleep" group was deprived of 16 hours of sleep. Both groups were deprived around the same number of hours of sleep. A more enlightening conclusion should be that "sleep debt" exists and is harmful, and we shouldn't feel bad sleeping in on weekends!

hashberry··on Noam Chomsky explains Donald Trump's recent success
Chomsky's analysis is the same as the NYTimes--that Trump appeals primarily to poor and uneducated voters, and that he has the same magnetism as Hitler. Too much ivory tower intellectualization.
hashberry··on A Review of the Amazon Books Store
"The central section however is dedicated to various gadgets, mostly created by Amazon itself, such as Echo, Fire TV, Kindle Fire, etc. In this the shop reminded me a little of the Apple Store, which clearly inspired the layout of this section."

The focal point of the "amazon books" store is its tech, not books. They are using "book store" as a cover. The U-Village is an upscale shopping experience and easily allows for impulse buys on new $100+ tech products. It's their version of the Apple Store.

hashberry··on The Fed Wants to Test How Banks Would Handle Negative Rates
What about the number of Americans receiving food stamps?

2008: 28 million

2016: 45 million

hashberry··on A domain move disaster
I've read similar horror stories. Everyone should be aware of this penalties and the numerous steps that need to be taken:

hashberry··on The cult of genius?
That article is rather misanthropic--all humans with average intellect are simply "teachable animals?" And does society and evolution really punish those with high intellect? Sidis was disgusted with sex and removed himself from the gene pool. That's his fault. And how are "smart women" affected by decreased procreation chances? They can go to the sperm bank and find a high IQ donor. And men can buy a surrogate.
hashberry··on Working remotely is hard
Working in an office is hard. Especially when you complete work early and have to pretend to be busy. With remote working, when you finish your tasks you are DONE. I've had many relaxing 4 hour days.
hashberry··on Campus Activists Weaponize ‘Safe Space’
Why do college students sound so childish? They expect university administrators to become the new parent, protecting them from the evil boogeymen of scary thoughts.
hashberry··on How One 17-Year-Old Coded a #1 App and Got Hired by Facebook
Good move Facebook--get them young and put them to work. "It's like being at Disneyland!" he says. I'm jealous of his wide-eyed optimism.
hashberry··on What The New York Times Didn’t Say About Amazon
The similarities and inaccuracies remind me of the Rolling Stone "A Rape on Campus" story. What is wrong with today's journalism? These are established, mainstream publishers. There is so much focus on the message instead of the facts that entire stories can be fabricated.

I canceled my NYTimes subscription last year because it has become increasingly frustrating to read, especially their "women in tech" articles. For example, their recent "What Really Keeps Women Out of Tech"[0] op-ed blames nerd male culture for making women uncomfortable, and argues for a more neutral environment with no Star Wars posters or tech magazines or nerdy t-shirts...

hashberry··on Efficiency up, turnover down: Sweden experiments with six-hour working day
I used job hop every 1-2 years looking for the perfect work environment. I couldn't find one until I started working as remote developer where the only thing that matters are results. My personal turnover is down: I've had the same job for seven years.

If you leave at the same time every day YOU ARE A SEAT WARMER. I remember sitting in a cubicle having completed all my work for the day, but couldn't leave at 3pm because it would look bad. That was my own personal hell because efficiency did not reward me with more personal time.
