hashberry··on Why the “Learn to Code” Meme Is Toxic and Shouldn't Be Used
I think sexism is also involved. Media professions attract more women (my journalism and marketing classes were filled with women). And the media loves to cover the gender gap in STEM. So now it's a bunch of guys tweeting to women telling them to "Learn to Code" after said women complain about getting laid off or career difficulties.
hashberry··on Hate Speech on Patreon
He is an infamous provocateur. I'm pretty sure this is the real reason why he was banned:

hashberry··on Hate Speech on Patreon
I find I change my language depending on my audience. Sargon was addressing the alt-right in an interview and using their own racist and sexist language against them, to insult them. It doesn't seem like he was attacking the black community or the gay community.
hashberry··on Amazon’s Minimum Wage Will Change How Americans Think About Work
I had many summer warehouse jobs doing picking and shipping/receiving. I busted my ass off with lots of manual labor and strict timetracking. But my co-workers were not exactly the brightest of the bunch: alcoholics, ex-cons, high school drop outs, poor English, etc. There's an entire bottom rung of society that most people ignore. Higher wages are for attracting and retaining better workers. If $15/hour ever becomes minimum federal wage, I bet Amazon would up their own minimum wage as well.
hashberry··on Amazon’s Minimum Wage Will Change How Americans Think About Work
An interesting tidbit on minimum wage:

> According to the Pew Research Center, when adjusted for inflation, the federal minimum wage in America peaked at $8.54 in 1968. If the federal minimum wage had kept up with increases in worker productivity since then, in 2012 it would have been $21.72 an hour. https://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2015/09/07/there-is...

hashberry··on Portland Anarchist Road Care Fixes Potholes Anonymously (2017)
> The state only exists to keep capitalist enterprise in check.

John Locke would disagree. The state exists to protect the rights of people and the public good. "Wherever Law ends, Tyranny begins."

hashberry··on What’s So Dangerous About Jordan Peterson?
I understand that cult leaders can be problematic. But do you think his followers are becoming a danger to society?
hashberry··on What’s So Dangerous About Jordan Peterson?
Jordan Peterson became famous after a student tried to debate him about his "Nazi followers" and gender pronouns:

Many people see him as an enemy because of his conservative viewpoints. His most recent debate with Cathy Newman from three days ago:

hashberry··on The worst distractions are the ones we love
My problem is that my procrastination is an addiction. There is a voice in my head telling me of all the productive things I need to do, and I enjoy rebelling against that voice and doing my own thing.

And then there is the nature of working for others, in that it requires a "sacrifice of ego." I shut down everything and become a work horse. I work for hours on end, because this is what I'm supposed to do for a living. I can't question if I really want to be doing this because that would cause me to procrastinate. Instead I become my work. Sometimes I enjoy what I do, but I am specialized in specific technologies so I'm doing a variation of the same tasks over and over. That's the life of this "modern worker."

hashberry··on Millennials Strike Back: An Esoteric Reading of the Last Jedi
The original Star Wars was about a son and his father, with redemption, forgiveness, and self-sacrifice. "I am a Jedi, like my father before me" still gives me shivers. But now Luke Skywalker says: "It's time for the Jedi to end." In other words: "it's time for patriarchy to end."

hashberry··on The Stress of Remote Working
There are two important aspects for successful remote working:

- Your company culture

- Your personality

For example, there is no way I'd participate in "very, very chatty" non-work meme sharing. First, people in my company don't expect this from anyone. Second, for me, it's easy to ignore these types of chats or just let them die off.

I just read the author's bio... he describes himself as as a "talkative full-stack coder." So for me, a quiet introvert, remote working is the opposite of stressful. No small talk, no pressure to participate in "office spirit," no "degradation of social skills" when my social skills are already at a set baseline, no desire to leave the house everyday for external stimuli, and no loneliness because all I need is my dog and close friends.

hashberry··on Apple’s diversity chief out after outcry
Yes, skin color does matter, read up on Critical Race Theory. To be colorblind is to be racist because it ignores the disadvantages one can't see due to one's own privilege.

The theory states that inequality is due to racism and anyone who is part of the dominant race not only benefits from racism but unconsciously perpetuates it. This is why everyone is so sensitive, because this is what is taught in the humanities in college. "Everything is racist, everything is sexist, etc."

hashberry··on Toward a Predictive Theory of Depression
> Depression has to be about something more than just beliefs; it has to be something fundamental to the nervous system.

Is he saying thoughts and beliefs aren't fundamental to the nervous system/CNS/brain?

What if people get depressed because their lives suck and they had a shitty childhood?

Also, why are women twice as likely to get depressed than men?[0] If "happiness is the derivative of neural confidence"... then do men have more neural confidence?

hashberry··on Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars
University degrees are a form of social signaling. It's a status symbol. I've met many self-taught developers with liberal arts degree from top ranked schools. I have no doubt their degrees helped them get their foot in the door and job hop and advance in their career.
hashberry··on Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars
I dated someone who worked an administrative position... she would complain of coworkers who would do nothing all day. She said her job was being done by three people when only one was needed. The lack of oversight and actual work being done was alarming. Who administrates the administrators? No one.

Bernie wanted to tax daytrading/Wallstreet to fund college education. I like this idea but it would probably cause the stock market to crash.

hashberry··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
> The tipping point for us making this decision was that the team behind Daily Stormer made the claim that we were secretly supporters of their ideology.

For those interested in more info behind this statement[0]:

In a post, [The Daily Stormer] site’s architect, Andrew Auernheimer, said he had personal relationships with people at Cloudflare, and they had assured him the company would work to protect the site in a variety of ways — including by not turning over data to European courts. Cloudflare has data centers in European countries such as Germany, which have strict hate speech and privacy laws.

Company officials offered differing responses when asked about Auernheimer’s post. Kramer, Cloudflare’s general counsel, said he had no knowledge of employee conversations with Auernheimer. Later, in an email, the company said Auernheimer was a well-known hacker, and that as a result at least one senior company official “has chatted with him on occasion and has spoken to him about Cloudflare’s position on not censoring the internet.”

A former Cloudflare employee, Ryan Lackey, said in an interview that while he doesn’t condone a lot of what Auernheimer does, he did on occasion give technical advice as a friend and helped some of the Stormer’s issues get resolved.

“I am hardcore libertarian/classical liberal about free speech — something like Daily Stormer has every right to publish, and it is better for everyone if all ideas are out on the internet to do battle in that sphere,” he said.

Vick at the ADL agrees that Anglin has a right to publish, but said people have the right to hold to task the Internet companies that enable him.

hashberry··on Outraged about the Google diversity memo?
I'm skeptical of blaming education. For example, 69% of developers say they are partially self-taught[0]. I've worked with many talented developers with liberal art degrees. The main takeaway of the memo is that women are filtering themselves out.

hashberry··on Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices?
Yes... for the first time in my career my desk is next to a window with natural light and fresh air. All previous positions have been in cubicles or stuck in the middle of an open floorplan.
hashberry··on Outraged about the Google diversity memo?
> I just dont understand how people who are supposed to be so smart can be so dumb.

Aspergers or something similar. Watch the Jordan Peterson interview. He's not well-spoken and he's not even that passionate. It's a joke the mainstream media is calling his memo a "manifesto" when it was just his attempt to analyze gender and diversity in his own socially awkward way. This really is about outrage culture.

hashberry··on Playing action video games may be bad for your brain – loss of grey matter
Yep. Teens (ages 13-8) lose 1 percent of their grey matter every year[0].

hashberry··on Playing action video games may be bad for your brain – loss of grey matter
It's more than video games:

- Becoming pregnant reduces grey matter[0].

- Watching porn reduces grey matter[1].

- Heavy use of Facebook reduces grey matter[2].

- Tweeting while watching TV reduces grey matter[3]. etc etc etc.

hashberry··on Prostitution decriminalized: Rhode Island’s experiment
> What the hell is this "rape has nothing to do with sex" nonsense

This is because feminists (and everyone else) started rejecting Freud's theories of sex in the '60s. Freudian theory states sex and aggression are interconnected (e.g. the much misunderstood Oedipus complex). Even now people think violence is due to our culture, not biological drives or instincts. This is why feminists say we have a "Rape Culture," and that all we have to do is fix culture, then all rape and violence will disappear. Freud was much more pessimistic. "Civilization and Its Discontents" is a good summary of why.

hashberry··on Memory of Mankind: All of Human Knowledge Buried in a Salt Mine
This is global doomsday level thinking. Reminds me of Y2K.

And using clay? This seems very sentimental. Are there not more long-lasting mediums? Especially with laser printing where we can quickly engrave knowledge without the risk of human error or time-consuming manual labor.

hashberry··on Peter Thiel believes the ‘age of Apple is over’
"Apple is not only devoting a lot of resources towards wearables research but is also very interested in a number of other areas, including machine learning, virtual reality and augmented reality."

hashberry··on Netflix's '3%' Turns the Google Job Interview into a Dystopian Nightmare
At least they can become the 3% based on innate intelligence and talent. With tech interviews, you need to come pre-packaged with experience and skill, like those "entry level" positions that want 3-4 years of experience across multiple technologies.
hashberry··on Killing Lara Croft
I remember playing the original Tomb Raider as a teenager, and while Lara did have "sex appeal," it was the action and violence I enjoyed the most. Let's not kid ourselves--violence sells video games. Imagine if Lara Croft never died and never killed anything/anyone. She wouldn't be Lara Croft. Almost every photo in this article shows a woman holding two guns. She is a killer, and I love her for that.
