hashberry··on Experiments find higher social class more likely to have inflated sense of skill
It's because the browser disables certain features (I believe FileSystem API) which makes it easier to fingerprint.

One workaround is to clear storage in devtools (Application tab) whenever visiting NYTimes and smile that you're messing with their analytics and tracking data.

hashberry··on When Women Outrun Men
Here's a related scientific study that gives a possible reason why: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4899381/

> Women have more body fat than men in both elite (Vernillo et al. 2013) and recreational (Hoffman et al. 2010a, b) athletes. In both elite and recreational runners the percentage of body fat is higher in women compared to men (Blaak 2001). It could be argued that fatty tissue may be used as an energy reserve and this could be an advantage for ultra-distances since runners tend to lose body fat during multi-hours running competitions (Karstoft et al. 2013; Schütz et al. 2013). Women might benefit from their higher percentage of body fat since both sexes lose a similar amount of fat during an ultra-endurance performance such as a 100 km ultra-marathon (Knechtle et al. 2010a, b, 2012a, b).

hashberry··on Israeli Mossad launches cyber challenge
There's no reason to load a 30KB JavaScript library for such a simple webpage. See http://youmightnotneedjquery.com/
hashberry··on Israeli Mossad launches cyber challenge
woosh, loading jQuery to access an element is not needed. document.getElementById would suffice.
hashberry··on Israeli Mossad launches cyber challenge
This site loads the jQuery library in order to...

1. Access $("#text1")[0].innerHTML

2. $( document ).ready() { typeWriter (); }

hashberry··on Fasting Affects the Brain
> And that’s what we’re finding in lab animals — the brain and body actually perform better during fasting. In the case of the brain, cognitive function, learning, memory, and alertness are all increased by fasting.

I find this to be true whenever I fast for 12+ hours. It feels like I'm on a drug.

It's strange to realize how not eating can be good for you.

Fun trivia: the longest a human went without food is 382 days. [0]

hashberry··on I lost my job for speaking up about women’s rights
The biological sex vs cultural gender debate is rather fascinating because it comes down to categories and definitions. Each side can't agree on the "correct version" of reality because culture creates simulacrum (representations) that feel real and authentic.[0][1]

hashberry··on Tesla Posts Big Quarterly Loss as Its Electric-Car Sales Lag
Yeah, bad wording, changed it to "smoked weed" to match the NYTimes narrative: "Elon Musk Smoked Weed On Air" [0]

[0] https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/07/business/dealbook/elon-mu...

hashberry··on Tesla Posts Big Quarterly Loss as Its Electric-Car Sales Lag
> Mr. Musk, who had previously said the company did not need more capital, indicated that he had changed his mind because Tesla was now in a position to use capital more efficiently.

This concluding paragraph contradicts a quote in the middle of the article that explained the loss is due to inefficiency ("spiking costs for obvious strategy missteps really drew blood at the bottom line"). NYTimes journalists enjoy making Elon Musk look dumb, like when he smoked weed with Joe Rogan.

hashberry··on Ask HN: What are your tips to reduce drinking alcohol?
If you're not a "one or two drinks" type of person and alcohol is a negatively impacting you, then you really have to permanently stop drinking like Justin Kan. The average drinker "keeps a lid" by moderating their intake because they know how to stop. It's that simple. If you don't know how to stop, then you have to stop completely.
hashberry··on Developer Survey Results 2019
Drupal and jQuery are now the top two "Most Dreaded Web Frameworks," with Ruby on Rails and Angular.js trailing.[0]

hashberry··on Tesla stock down more than 8% after reporting biggest sales drop in its history
Tesla had their moment but now their competition is catching up, especially luxury brands. Also, if a recession hits, the auto industry is going to take a beating (maybe the sales drop is a foreshadowing).
hashberry··on Switching from Disqus to Commento reduced my page weight
Also, Disqus is owned by Zeta Global, a marketing company that exists to "maintain and monetize customers, using 'people-based, precision marketing'" with a database of 350 million people. [0]

hashberry··on Remote Work Is the Future
I'm not so sure about this. Remote is great for task-based work. But certain companies like Amazon seem to have a "cult"-like culture that keeps everyone focused and on the same page. And Google provides on-site services to increase productivity and time spent on campus. Being a remote worker, I feel more detached from the company "vision" and more like a mercenary who likes to get things done and then go about my life.
hashberry··on Facebook 'mistakenly deleted' years of Mark Zuckerberg's old Facebook posts
Looking forward to reading the postmortem from Facebook's IT team on why this happened and how they plan to prevent it from happening to other users...
hashberry··on The Weird World of Vegan YouTube Stars
> Commenters have called her “disgusting,” a “fraud” and a “hypocrite,” and others have told her to kill herself ... This kind of online abuse is typical for ex-vegan influencers.

The irony of vegan ethics against causing harm and pain to animals, except when it comes to humans.

hashberry··on 1100 layoffs at Bay Area tech companies
Do these companies foresee an upcoming recession? It seems big companies always try to tighten up before a recession becomes "official."
hashberry··on Millennials Are Driving Cars as Much as Older Generations
> Americans born between 1980 and 1984 are just as likely to own cars compared to, say, their parents’ cohort.

This demographic is age 35-39. What about younger millennials?

hashberry··on Appeal accepted: Google removed my ads-free app for “deceptive ads”
Good to hear!

Social media is an excellent tool for publicly shaming companies, but it's sad it has come down to this.

hashberry··on Why Is Silicon Valley So Obsessed with the Virtue of Suffering?
It's more profitable to make news than report on the news.
hashberry··on Procrastination Has Nothing to Do with Self-Control
Chronic procrastinator here. Procrastinating feels like an addiction for me because it offers instant pleasure. Right now I am procrastinating instead of trying to fix a dumb JavaScript bug. When it comes to "bad mood," I've noticed a pattern from my self-centered ego: 1). The work is "beneath" me, and/or 2). The work threatens my ego.
hashberry··on Why big tech should fear Europe
GDPR compliance is expensive to implement correctly. It's more about data regulation than privacy. It hurts small startup firms who don't have the resources or time, and rewards large companies that do.
hashberry··on Elite Colleges Make Low-Income Students Feel Unwelcome
Classism is America's dirty secret. What makes these colleges "elite?" Rich kids attend them because their rich parents attended them (or donated to them).
hashberry··on Moving Back to Lighttpd
> We haven’t seen a lot of open source projects doing well after the parent company had been acquired.

Seems premature. Often the project gets forked when the parent project goes downhill. Right now NGINX is an excellent, stable, performant, flexible web server with lots of community support and documentation.

hashberry··on The mass shooting in New Zealand was designed to spread on social media
Is anyone disturbed by the amount of media coverage by the mainstream media? Here is how the New York Times is covering it, multiple articles saying the same thing. They want their own content to go viral: http://nytimes.com/trending

- New Zealand Shooting Live Updates: Attack on Christchurch Mosques Leaves 49 Dead

- A Mass Shooting of, and for, the Internet

- In Christchurch, Signs Point to a Gunman Steeped in Internet Trolling

hashberry··on Tumblr has lost 30 percent of web traffic since December
This "sex censorship" includes child pornography, since the availability of it caused Tumblr's app to be banned from iOS.[0]

hashberry··on Facebook Loses Top Executives, Including Chris Cox
I'm curious about this as well. From her Wikipedia article[0] and experience in online sales, maybe it means this:

> Author Shoshana Zuboff called Sandberg "the Typhoid Mary of surveillance capitalism."

[0]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheryl_Sandberg

hashberry··on Facebook Loses Top Executives, Including Chris Cox
Some theories:

1. Rebranding Facebook as secure and private

2. If this increases usage, more opportunity to display ads

3. Their data shows they gain more information by monitoring what people publicly share, not say in private

4. Removes all responsibility to work with law enforcement and governments for illegal activity, since it's encrypted

hashberry··on Facebook Loses Top Executives, Including Chris Cox
Interesting spin from the NYTimes ("Facebook Loses Top Executives, Including Chris Cox"[0]):

"The departures follow two years of scandals for Facebook around data privacy and disinformation. The issues have buffeted the Silicon Valley company, causing internal turmoil and a redirection in strategy."

hashberry··on Why the “Learn to Code” Meme Is Toxic and Shouldn't Be Used
Look up James Damore. When men comment on women's career choices, they get fired. And now men are getting banned from Twitter. Probably because "sexism."
