harvey9··on What I learnt co-leading an AI Safety bootcamp for legal and governance practit
In conducting his affair he was breaking the lockdown rules that he had written, which harmed their credibility. The antivax crowd (I am not a member) quite reasonably extrapolated that if the architect of lockdown was not locking himself down then he wasn't too worried about the virus, ergo vaccines were being oversold. When you are a public figure like that then the personal is political.
harvey9··on Reasons I didn't become an EMT, ranked
We already have a machine that can do CPR very well. What we don't yet have is a robot that can enter an unfamiliar environment and safely extract a patient who may have other injuries or be entrapped.
harvey9··on DeepSeek Harness Desktop for macOS and Windows
No jurisdiction but their operatives have global reach. For most people the more practical risk for any rented ai is IP theft.
harvey9··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
I once cracked a pretty good joke on a high-traffic thread and got about 30k upvotes for that one post. None of my serious posts in serious subreddits ever got close. I don't think Reddit karma is a useful indicator of anything.
harvey9··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
'a lot' depends on how much you had to begin with.
harvey9··on Show HN: HN.watch – Videos of all Hacker News posts
Please, nobody click on the link to this hn item within hn.watch as it would be even more dangerous than typing 'google' into Google
harvey9··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
In the UK, Trading Standards is done at local authority level. There is no funding scenario where your local council is going to be able to go toe-to-toe with big tech.
harvey9··on Show HN: I built a new version of my fun spatial 3D online meeting app
Having a birds eye view changes the dynamic of an in person event because you can more easily observe who makes a beeline for who. But as someone who gets a headache from first person games I still prefer birds eye anyway.
harvey9··on Keys Not Included: recovering the signing keys for US driver's license barcodes
Looks like the criteria were 1. No cost to the government/taxpayer. 2. Minimal work for the civil service.
harvey9··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
This seems tenuous. The LLM is not being exploited.
harvey9··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Not obvious to everyone.
harvey9··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
I suspect the person you replied to only happened to see that from physics grads. I have seen it in all sorts of people and I sometimes did it myself when I was young (I am not a physics grad).
harvey9··on Young Americans have never witnessed a functioning foreign policy
Popular opinion can just be at local scale. Hence Tom Lehrer's joke

"It takes a certain amount of courage to get up in a coffee house or a college auditorium and come out in favour of the things everyone else in the room is against like peace and justice and brotherhood and so on"

harvey9··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
I used to work for a firm that did custom homes for wealthy clients. Even when we paired them up with designers some of them just preferred a very plain appearance.

That said, I thought the games room with rows of hide-away PCs looked like a call centre or at best a 90s internet cafe.

harvey9··on Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone
People choose not to because they see no need to, but if they put some time, effort and not a lot of money then those barriers are not so high. I took the trouble to get a driving license because I saw value in that. I also took the trouble to learn to set up my own stuff on a VPS because I saw value in that too.
harvey9··on Urban Congestion Pricing and the Response Times of Emergency Medical Services
I thought it was an allusion to trams.
harvey9··on Mental Health Workers Say Algorithmic Triage Is Hurting Patients
This is still ER - clinicians using AI tools. The MH triage flow is patient interacts with an AI by typing or speaking. It could work - maybe the systems in the article are just not very well set-up.
harvey9··on Mental Health Workers Say Algorithmic Triage Is Hurting Patients
I mostly agree, except in some circumstances good triage can imply angry patients (assuming demand will exceed supply sometimes) : Lots of people present inappropriately at ER and then complain that they have to wait a long time.
harvey9··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
I used the web based installer and it was so easy that we would be complaining the kids are not really learning anything by doing it!
harvey9··on Identifying fake cosmetics using AI
Why do they rearrange the logos anyway? Surely it isn't hard to scan a real one.
harvey9··on The teenage girls behind a $25 minimum wage fight in rural Alaska
If you read the article you would know it is literally about Americans who walk to work in the snow because they can't afford gas.
harvey9··on The teenage girls behind a $25 minimum wage fight in rural Alaska
If bad software still generates revenue, that's the value. I'm speaking as someone who has used awful software that some ignorant boss bought for our organisation.
harvey9··on Tim Curry has died
Lexx.
harvey9··on AI is hitting entry-level jobs hardest, Stanford study finds
Some percentage of engineering is actually people and politics. The more power (or alternative options) you have, the more you can speak your mind. But if you need the job then argue your case just to the boss, discreetly.
harvey9··on Public services are increasingly strained by LLM-written appeals for benefits
I would be astonished to see this outcome. It is costly and highly subjective.
harvey9··on UK internet age checks have boosted rogue adult sites, says Pornhub
In the words of Tom Lehrer

"I've got a hobby

Re-reading Lady Chatterley"

harvey9··on UK internet age checks have boosted rogue adult sites, says Pornhub
Not all damage is fatal
harvey9··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
it says a large healthcare org but does not say if that's a care provider where on-site jobs will be completely different from remote-compatible ones, or an insurer where most jobs could be done mostly on a PC.
harvey9··on Sticky wage norms and the real wage cost of unexpected inflation
Item 2 seems like a circular argument. If your wages did keep pace with inflation then of course subjectively there is no inflation. On the other hand this does not hold in all situations. In galloping inflation you might as well spend because savings get eroded.
harvey9··on Sticky wage norms and the real wage cost of unexpected inflation
Britain has a few structural issues too, so someone who happens to live in a big city, especially London, will have more opportunities without having to move.
