harshbutfair··on Apple has locked my Apple ID, and I have no recourse. A plea for help
I created a Google developer account with a separate email due to warnings like this. Then Google closed it because I left it idle too long and I didn't get the warning email. Sometimes you can't win.
harshbutfair··on Most Stable Raspberry Pi? Better NTP with Thermal Management
Thanks for writing this up! I have a similar setup, largely based on your earlier post. I'm looking forward to trying out some of these ideas.

Do 16Hz pulses make much difference? I found conflicting information and haven't yet tried it myself.

What do you use to get the data into influxdb? I'm using collectd but it doesn't gather a lot of useful info.

harshbutfair··on Incident: Swiss A333 at New York, rejected takeoff due to traffic on runway
Here's a very good video to help visualise what happened. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW6lAwLy_Os
harshbutfair··on Latam Airlines SYD to AKL flight: 50 people treated after mid-air incident
Hardly "almost the same place", it's ~6500km away.
harshbutfair··on One-Pedal Driving Explained
Depends on the car, mine (Polestar 2) uses regen braking regardless of whether one-pedal driving is selected. The consensus seems to be that coasting is slightly more efficient but barely enough to make a difference.
harshbutfair··on A decade of Have I Been Pwned
I do the same thing. I wondered why I hadn't received any breach notifications for a long time, I don't remember seeing a notification of this change.
harshbutfair··on The 1988 shooting down of Flight 655 as a user interface disaster
In my previous job writing a naval combat system (not Aegis) I figured that I couldn't prevent warships from existing, but I could make the combat system better, safer, easier and less error-prone to use which would ultimately reduce the likelihood of people being killed inadvertently. But I totally respect people who choose not to work in defence.
harshbutfair··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
Wall-mounted monitor rails, mounted horizontally. Normally I work with two 24" monitors side-by-side, but I can slide them apart if the kids need to use a monitor while I'm working.
harshbutfair··on Octopuses caught on camera throwing things at each other
In Australia we would never refer to pizzas as pies. Is this a US-only thing or does it happen elsewhere?
harshbutfair··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2022)
Rio Tinto | Senior Software Engineer | Perth, Australia | Full-time | Onsite/Hybrid

We're seeking experienced software engineers to expand our team for ongoing development of Rio Tinto's Autonomous Drilling System. Our machine automation software controls heavy equipment on a mine site thousands of kilometers from our operators.

Experience with complex applications written in C++ is a must. Python, Rust, Linux, PostgreSQL, GPS, networking and machine automation experience would all be relevant.

harshbutfair··on Sriracha hit revenue of $150M a year with no sales team or ad spend
Much like ugg boots are the name of the boots. Oh wait. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-05/trademark-battle-for-...
harshbutfair··on Unexpected 'Black Swan' defect discovered in soft matter for first time
I still think it's a strange phrase. To me a black swan is a normal swan.
harshbutfair··on Why are there so many Canadians in India?
As an Australian I will often use en-GB due to decades of Microsoft trying to force American spelling on us.
harshbutfair··on Unicomp New Model M Keyboard
As much as I would like one, $108 to ship a $104 keyboard really kills the deal.
harshbutfair··on 50k-year-old three-ply cord fragment found at Neanderthal site
That was my first thought as well.
harshbutfair··on Pizza Hut’s First Website
Redirects to the pizzahut.com.au main page for me.
harshbutfair··on The worst sales promotion in history: Hoover's free flight fiasco
There was a very similar promotion running in Australia last year where you could get free return flights for buying six bottles of wine (minimum cost around $68). They also required sending in paper forms and nominating three destinations and three sets of dates. I went to Bali on that deal.
harshbutfair··on Video suggests huge problems with Uber’s driverless car program
From many years developing safety critical software, I reckon culture and processes are more important than certification. There are various standards for developing safety systems in other industries (defence, aviation, etc) and these standards exist for a reason. Have Uber applied any standard for their automation software? Or equivalent development processes? "Move fast and break things" is fine for an app, but not fine for controlling a vehicle.
harshbutfair··on Uber’s New Rival in Australia: An Indian Upstart
I think it's negative, and describing them as "an Indian Upstart" sounds a bit racist to me.

Oxford dictionary definition #1: (derogatory) A person who has risen suddenly in rank or importance, especially one who behaves arrogantly.

harshbutfair··on Measuring the many sizes of a Git repository
This seems like a very useful tool, and it provides useful information on our repository.

But in RHEL7 it gives this error: error: couldn't open Git repository: git rev-parse failed: Unknown option: -C

I assume it requires a later version of git.

harshbutfair··on Cortana is really bad
If I type "lync", the default option is to run Skype for Business (Lync's successor).

If I type "skype" the default option is to install Skype for Business, even though I already have it installed.

It is very unintuitive. It is as bad as the search in Jira/Confluence, and that's saying something.

harshbutfair··on Show HN: The best time to visit any city
Likewise Perth has the same error. "The warmest time of year is generally mid-February where highs are regularly around 63.7°F (17.6°C)". The text in Overall Perth Travel Experience by Season is also wrong.

I like the concept though.

harshbutfair··on Flight QF72: What happens when automation leaves pilots powerless?
I think the second event you're thinking of was a Malaysia Airlines flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur. https://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/investigation_reports/2...
harshbutfair··on Dangerous Skyscrapers Channel Wind and Sun, Topple Pedestrians and Start Fires
If I remember correctly, my university constructed a new building for the architecture department but it was so impractical they gave it to computer science instead.
