harha··on What are farm animals thinking?
It’s quite a practical one where I come from, you can choose civil service instead of military service, where you’ll function as an underpaid slave to an organization that lacks incentive to develop your skills, pay a fair wage and focus on things that are relevant, it will rather do whatever keeps the inflow of almost free labor going.

This is all because someone thought it’s good to have young people give something back to society, whatever that means.

harha··on What are farm animals thinking?
And before you know it you have some bureaucrat deciding on how to live your life.. I’d rather not have any mandatory service
harha··on Which Movies Are the Most Polarizing? A Statistical Analysis
Oh this is also my metric for good movies and conversely I drive clear of high critics ratings with low audience ratings.

Life's too serious already, I want to enjoy watching movies

harha··on macOS Sonoma is setting records for update size
There's a few reasons I can't do that and even though I've been using Linux since the mid 2000s, I don't want to spend my time tinkering.

Apart from that, the bigger issue is that this is something that affects many users and the selling point of Apple was always that it should just work, which it clearly doesn't in this case.

harha··on macOS Sonoma is setting records for update size
Not macOS but my iPhone is struggling with space to update and there’s a ton of data I just can’t delete like data X stores somewhere or WhatsApp that duplicates photos in addition to a massive amount of system files that aren’t specified.

Nothing beats concur - the app made so only people with an assistant can file expenses
harha··on It Is Time to End the War on Remote Work
There’s other aspects making the job an overall better option at the moment.

Policies like this aren’t good for productivity or retention though and I don’t see this being the long-term path for successful companies.

harha··on It Is Time to End the War on Remote Work
I head to the office to badge in every day, then I'm on Zoom calls, even with folks in the same office since there's often someone from a different office on the calls I'm on - of course because it helps in-person collaboration.

At the same time we don't have budget for me to regularly meet the team in person, so here we are with RTO making us more productive.

Before RTO I'd head in regularly for meetings or just to catch up, but the 2-3 days at home really meant I could get work done in peace and spend less for transport, food, etc. and get other things done without rushing.

I'm quite sure we'll see companies with a more reasonable approach both get more talent and make them more productive.

harha··on Tracking Austrian grocery prices by scraping store sites
That’s what you get when the population loves to be dependent on their government.
harha··on Pooling and Sharing of wealth makes everyone's wealth grow faster
Yeah US really has the worst of it all, very high taxes and not much to show for it.
harha··on Pooling and Sharing of wealth makes everyone's wealth grow faster
well you need to in a public system that's overloaded, so you lose both when paying in and again when you need to get treatment.
harha··on Pooling and Sharing of wealth makes everyone's wealth grow faster
and it creates all the wrong incentives since they're overdoing it by quite a bit. it also forces people to less optimal decisions because they need to avoid taxes. at the end of the day, this makes them less resilient, since governments won't be fast enough to react to new developments and incentivized to actually solve problems.

edit: just to add to this: I don't think pooling / sharing is bad, there are many cases where this makes sense (investments, insurance), especially when it's voluntary, but it's easy to overdo it in a forced model. European living abroad btw, familiar with many different ways people live.

harha··on Ode to the M1
But hey, they're super environmentally conscious at least by adding a few recycled cans to the new laptop you'll end up buying after the repair isn't worth it.

harha··on Will browsers be required by law to stop you from visiting infringing sites?
I don’t think this is the only reason. Government gains much more control when they can count on bad incentives to avoid people from being able to go through the due process.

When the ISP (or bank) becomes not only the service provider but also police and judge at the same time, they can simply block you and you’re left with no alternative

harha··on Will browsers be required by law to stop you from visiting infringing sites?
that and KYC
harha··on Will browsers be required by law to stop you from visiting infringing sites?
That's pretty bad - I don't think it's a good government pattern to move policing to corporations or the population. It messes quite badly with established principles such as innocent until proven guilty because corporations or individuals won't want to face the risk and it's also inefficient for each entity to figure out a process (and implement that badly).

In many European and Asian countries this was the prerequisite to get approval from the app to not be locked up

And yet they made it in policies all around the world with lots of people involved poking around in the other peoples noses and throats.
harha··on Time to subsidize e-bikes?
Yup making cycling at full cost the better option (as you describe tackling the issues around safety, theft) will have a real long-term impact, otherwise you might end up subsidizing a fun little toy that is used for a few weeks then goes back to the garage.

Another problem with subsidies is that it targets a specific mode (e-bikes), while simpler, cheaper, normal bikes might be good enough already. It could also lead to local sellers increasing the price of e-bikes.

harha··on SimCity 4 was released 20 years ago
Curious to learn more here: everyone was praising the M1 so much, but here’s a case that based on this wouldn’t fit the bill.

also how high do you think the penalty for running an intel binary is?

harha··on SimCity 4 was released 20 years ago
Would be nice if they’d do the same for civ 6 - it’s burning hot on my MacBook (not sure it would solve the issue but worth a try)

harha··on Stop whining about “The EU Cookie Policy” and improve your ways
What if you could only buy bundles of goods which are dynamically generated (and look like a basket to the user) and the seller just shows frequently purchased bundles or combines subsets of these? Curious where to draw the line.
harha··on Can we make bicycles sustainable again?
Oh yeah fully agree some things are just silly and not having the option for rim brakes isn’t good either, if you live somewhere dry and safe you’re probably better off with nice rim brakes than cheap mechanical disk brakes that aren’t properly adjusted.

Another annoying one is internally routed cables.

Some good things do happen though, e.g. thru axles, small and light TPU inner tubes.

harha··on Can we make bicycles sustainable again?
Well you don’t need disk brakes until you do when the car pops up in front of you.

There’s a bunch of people who would gain more from losing weight than whatever the marketing department of the bike company tells them, but it’s great to have this choice. I’m having just as much fun cycling as I do reading up on the tech and tinkering with my bikes, that’s time I’m not spending on being interested in cars.

harha··on Can we make bicycles sustainable again?
Internally geared hubs solve that problem if you’re not looking for a anything specialized like a road or mountain bike
