harbud··on Perl 5.17.6 is now available
I agree on several of your points. CPAN is kind of meh right now, since Python/Ruby/node.js are quickly catching up (or have passed it, even). You can quite easily find libraries existing in other languages and not in CPAN.

For me it now boils down to: sunk cost (if you're already familiar with Perl, it makes sense to keep doing it in Perl) and some features that Perl currently really excels at (variable scoping, regex integration, Unicode).

harbud··on Perl 5.17.6 is now available
Except perl 5.17.6! (I suspect the hash randomization feature will cause a lot of disturbance)
harbud··on PJSON: pretty, colorful json output formatting for terminal
Is there a colored JSON dumper in Perl?
harbud··on Why Did I Choose Perl When Building Crowdtilt?
Reason no 6: The expression of people's faces when I tell them that I use Perl. “Oh! wow, why?” Priceless.
harbud··on HTTPie: A cURL-like tool for humans
Except wget -r, which is still widely used and has no equivalent functionality in curl.
harbud··on Distribution of colors in movie posters between 1914 and 2012
Ok, httpie is prettier and has some syntax shortcuts, but it doesn't even do a fraction of what curl or wget does. No recursive downloads, no simulating diferent HTTP protocol version, no SSL options, no even retry options! #fail

(I am in no way an httpie hater.)

harbud··on Pure CSS3 animated Pac-man (no images, no javascript)
I thought there was going to be an actual game.
harbud··on Here comes the greatest Internet landgrab in history
The winner will be ICANN who laughs all the way to the bank with hundreds of new gTLD registration fees (equalling tens of millions of US$). The losers will most probably be companies like uniregistry.com (or, more specifically, their investors) who will register tens of new gTLDs and later find out that they are not worth as much.
harbud··on Sony Smart Watch
Judging from the store website:

- Recharge cycle every 3-4 days (compared to months/years for a traditional watch)

- No apps listed for functionalities that usually belong to a feature/sports watch (heart pulse/BP monitor, temp/moisture/altitude reading, compass)

- It's Sony

Verdict: not interested.

harbud··on Xip.io - a magic domain name that provides wildcard DNS for any IP address
Nice, although were I to write one, I'd probably just use PowerDNS and its pipe backend. Probably only some 30 lines of Perl/Ruby/whatever. Example: http://wiki.powerdns.com/trac/browser/trunk/pdns/modules/pip...
harbud··on Facebook Launches Simple Mobile Payments
Don't worry, if this workaround is popular enough, Apple will change its policy again.
harbud··on Facebook Launches Simple Mobile Payments
Hence, FB has been trying to create its own phone/mobile OS.
harbud··on Facebook Launches Simple Mobile Payments
Probably because FB is not a bank, and there are strict regulations in most countries for companies that store people's money like banks. Paypal is not a bank either, but I'd guess storing credits is still easier regulation-wise.
harbud··on Yahoo Axis
Yahoo! never cared for Linux users. Remember the Linux version of Yahoo! Messenger? It lagged behind the Windows version so much before being quietly removed. Coincidentally, I never care much for Yahoo! anymore.
harbud··on GIMP 2.8 (Stable) Finally Available For Download
Single window, ok cool. But after ages, still no tool to draw some boxes and circles? This is proof that Gimp's goal is not designer's productivity. Pass.
harbud··on Reasons to Learn Markdown
Nothing beats Org (http://orgmode.org) for me. But sadly outside of Emacs (and Vim) it's virtually unknown to the rest of the world.
harbud··on GNU Wget in decline?
The lack of libwget does frustate me sometimes; I have to use wget strictly via command-line. curl also has some nice features lacking in wget: selecting HTTP/1.0 or HTTP/1.1, support for multiple SSL libraries, etc. But wget surely has many features that curl doesn't have.

In short, I use both.

harbud··on GNU Wget in decline?
But curl curve is inclining.
harbud··on Which reads faster, Chinese or English?
Thanks! Although over time I've also come to accept that I will never be near as fast as the natives (or people who learn to read from when they were a child).
harbud··on Which reads faster, Chinese or English?
Off topic: I started learning Chinese a few years ago when I was already an adult, and my Chinese reading speed is still stuck below 150 WPM, while my English, also non-native language, is around 500 WPM. Any tip to increase it? Recently tried flash reading exercises like the aforementioned spreeder.com, seems to help a bit.
harbud··on Yet Another Task Application - org mode style tasks in the browser
So the only use case for this application is when one cannot use "the real thing" (org-mode in Emacs), e.g. when browsing using an internet kiosk PC, tablet, and smartphone?

Btw, I do hope tablets and phones can run Emacs soon :)

harbud··on Cpanel University! But you're doing it all wrong!
Well, competitors have existed since a decade ago, but many have also died. The closest competitor now seems to be Plesk, but it hasn't been able to snatch the crown from cPanel yet. If I remember it, Plesk 7 or 8 for Windows is a mess. All software suck :)
harbud··on Imagine a world where Bash supports JSON.
I'd rather see an extensible quoting syntax a la Postgres' pl/pgSQL, e.g. ``j` {"a": 1}``. When you want to support YAML: ``y` {a: 1}``.
harbud··on Imagine a world where Bash supports JSON.
So you never use 'single' and "double" quotes?
harbud··on Google+ Introduces Automatic Face Recognition To Photo Tagging
Never used photo tagging in G+ or FB, opt-in for who btw? For the one being tagged or the user who uploaded the photo?
harbud··on Do You Hear What I Hear? Yes, It’s Paypal Stealing Money From Kids
We just need more competitors for PayPal. Perhaps one from credit card company, one from Google, one from Facebook, and a couple from successful, less evil (for now) startups.
harbud··on Want to Register a Domain Name? Don't Go With GoDaddy - Technology - GOOD
Just bought my first domain name at GoDaddy 2 days ago (it's a .co, and GoDaddy has a nice bargain on those). Oh well, maybe I'll transfer in a couple of months.

Actually I hate the web interface and domain management panel. "Too user-friendly" and too many options.

harbud··on Are Europeans Really Not Using Twitter?
So what do the French use for talking to fellow Frenchmen? (Like QQ for Chinese).
harbud··on Asciifi - an ASCII art converter for a more civilized age
Thanks. I think the music sounds cool and is quite apt for the page.
