haram_masala··on Show HN: Free 3D virtual office in the browser
The killer app here would be to license or safely mimic some classic office layouts: Mad Men, The Office, Silicon Valley, Parks and Rec. Or even the USS Enterprise.

Or, an “App Store” for interior designers and artists to sell office spaces and furnishings.

haram_masala··on You Don't Need UUID
There should be a name for this kind of article, this sort of know-it-all hectoring that occurs in so much media now. It goes well beyond the technical fields - think of how many parenting, cooking, and athletics blogs and articles hasten to inform you “you’re doing it wrong.”

No doubt this phenomenon successfully plucks at some emotional vulnerability most of us have, and thus brings in the clicks.

edit: I also disagree with most of the points this article makes, but that’s just, like, my opinion, man.

haram_masala··on Air France cancels flights as Russia withholds clearance
That would be much more than a shot across the bow, given how much the Russian economy and federal budget depends on gas revenues.
haram_masala··on Amazon Prime inflates prices, using the false promise of ‘free shipping’
A carabiner? I can’t imagine trusting my life with something bought through the Amazon marketplace.
haram_masala··on In Mexico, cartels are hunting down police at their homes
Mexican drug cartels have diversified into other industries, such as avocados. They employ the same tactics as they do with drugs in order to monopolize production.

Legalizing drugs would eliminate the risk premium, but both fentanyl and avocados are high-margin products. The problem is at least partially structural and cultural, not merely regulatory.

haram_masala··on Daniel Stenberg: curl doesn't qualify for TravisCI free tier
Agreed with this, because it gives you a relatively direct upgrade path in case you want to start using GitLab Enterprise.
haram_masala··on Overwork contributes to 745k premature deaths per year
Not me, which narrative do you mean? Perhaps one that is anti-work and pro-UBI?
haram_masala··on Americans are on the move, but their stuff doesn’t always follow
You're not going to believe me, but if not, it's your loss: Richmond, Virginia. It absolutely ticks all of those boxes, and does so with an offbeat gusto.
haram_masala··on How I raised a $5.1M seed as a first-time, female, solo founder for a biotech co
To paraphrase Feynman, the odds of winning the lottery are essentially the same whether or not you buy a ticket.
haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=ling+ling+boppin&t=fpas&ia=web

… returns plenty of results. And hip-hop is a subculture of pop culture that is dominated by and mostly caters to young black people.

Let’s assume the best of each other here on HN and not accuse people of making things up.

haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
So, every race, then.
haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
You make a very good point. Regarding the Korean example, I’d conclude that Koreans are more likely to get involved in organized crime in Japan because of structural factors of Japanese society and economy.
haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
One proximal but surely insufficient explanation is that assaulting Asian people has become a trope in hip-hop over the past couple of years (e.g. “ling-ling boppin’”).
haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
Just to explore this: what exactly is your objection to the often-cited observation that black people, who are 13% of the population, commit 52% of the violent crimes? I don’t even know if that’s accurate - if not, then surely that’s the biggest problem with it. But if it’s true, then why is it a dog whistle?

I’m not challenging you here, I’m trying to understand why it’s wrong to state it in this kind of context.

haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
I can’t speak to the other three points you made - though they sound reasonable and plausible. But divide-and-conquer is certainly being practiced in America today, both within ethnic communities and between them. It’s a nasty game orchestrated by the media and large corporations, and not fundamentally different than how it’s been practiced in other countries, like Rwanda and early Soviet Russia.
haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
One way to fight these biases is to remind ourselves that it’s a very small percentage of any demographic that commits violent crimes. It might be more useful, then, to say “99% of X people are never violent versus 99.2% of Y people.”
haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
The crowd is also attacking the white female passengers, but black-on-white crime is generally ignored by the media, including in this story.
haram_masala··on An Asian Uber Driver Was Attacked by a Mob. Then YouTube Took Down His Video
There was a screenshot of the video, and sadly your hunch is correct.
haram_masala··on If Apple is the only organisation defending our privacy, it is time to worry
True, it’s very difficult to see what iOS apps and iOS itself are doing. And we can assume that third-party apps are collecting whatever info they can - even after 14.5, when they presumably disclose what they’re collecting.

But, can’t we infer from Apple’s earning statements how much they’re monetizing user data? Currently that seems like not much. Then again, they probably wouldn’t have recruited Antonio Garcia if they weren’t interested in milking that particular cow.

haram_masala··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
You can’t enter without an Amazon account and the app on your phone, I believe.
haram_masala··on Bitcoin Miners Are Giving New Life to Old Fossil-Fuel Power Plants
To quote an old joke: they’re Dunning-Krugerrands.
haram_masala··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
I’m sorry, but I really don’t believe you and it seems like you’re just trying to agitate.
haram_masala··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
His adoptive parents were part of a circle of people who, in the 1970s, suggested that up to 70 million Americans might have to be interned and executed in order to bring about Communism. And to be specific, they felt that this would be an acceptable price to pay.
haram_masala··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
Once upon a time, when friends or acquaintances would complain about judgementalism, I’d tell them that to judge is normal and natural, that we as human beings are equipped with judgement for a very good reason, and that they truly would not want to live in a judgement-free society.

Today, they can live in San Francisco.

haram_masala··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
Please don’t chalk me up as some kind of Marxist activist, but: that padlock probably says a lot about the addictive nature, pricing, and perhaps engineered scarcity of Red Bull.
haram_masala··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
Why would a genetic cause be implausible? Genetics guide human behavior. It seems very unlikely that behavior doesn’t vary among ethnic groups, but many other phenotypic factors do.
haram_masala··on The anus is an evolutionary marvel
Not to be snarky, but isn’t every part of a successful organism an evolutionary marvel? If not, then perhaps a more interesting tale would be to look at the bodily systems that are substandard garbage. I’d probably start with the lower back.
haram_masala··on Host a Next.js SSR App with Real-Time Data on AWS Amplify – Amazon Web Services
What are the benefits of SSR apps? One that I can think of is preventing other people from stealing your content.
haram_masala··on ‘Belonging Is Stronger Than Facts’: The Age of Misinformation
Genghis Khan was Temujin. They weren’t separate people, as you suggest.

You make a lot of incorrect assumptions, too many to list, really. Honestly you seem a bit deranged.

haram_masala··on China lands rover on Mars
I don’t think the Uigyurs would agree with that statement. Particularly the ones that are being raped and re-educated in camps.
