happyslobro··on Implication of sabotage adds intrigue to SpaceX investigation
Sabotage seems totally plausible, considering that one company is making surprising progress towards us becoming a space faring species. Aliens also seems totally plausible, for the same reason.

If we're going to go nuts over pure speculation, I would prefer that we focus on aliens. They are much more entertaining.

happyslobro··on SVG has more potential
Forgive my ignorance, but why would anyone ever need to parse an SVG server side?

Now that you got me thinking, SVG might be a decent, if somewhat large, format for accepting sketches from users. Something like "draw a map, and we'll find it on Google maps for you". But I am certain that that (SVG user input) isn't a thing yet.

Yep, that headline and image will get lots of shares on Facebook. Let's just roll with it, and skip the A/B test.

Expert here! We need to wait and see if the angular velocity accelerates exponentially. Until then, we can't be certain that there is any hazard. You may all go back to work now.

We'll measure its angle regularly and bill your insurance monthly until something or nothing happens.

happyslobro··on The cypherpunk revolution
It always starts underground. When it breaks out into the mainstream, it won't even be a movement anymore, it will just be life as usual. That green lock will be gone from the browser, along with any protocols that do not end in "s". The dozen or so communications apps on your phone will be encrypting everything, but not exposing any configuration.

And, only one company will sign everyone's public key, because regular users just want to delegate everything to a familiar name. Then we will need another revolution, an underground network of public key signers. With names like 51GNpnk and TheRealBob. One of TheRealBobs will come smoke a joint with you in your parent's basement, and sign your key for $5, so that you can get into the Minecraft party on the weekend.

happyslobro··on 1 in 5 Seafood Samples Is Fake, Report Finds
Names are cheap. If you need to buy them in bulk as a commodity, that can be arranged.

I was lucky to work in the tame minority of the fishing industry, but we sure heard our fair share of horror stories from the boats registered out of the Philippines and Thailand. Not sure what percentage was true, but the common theme is: humans and their names and families are cheap, if the buyer isn't racist.

happyslobro··on Show HN: A flask app to make dashboards, easily
So, move expensive operations outside of the web processes. Looks like the Flask community has worked out good ways of doing that. Seems legit, answers my question :)
happyslobro··on Show HN: A flask app to make dashboards, easily
Yeah, I was running it under gunicorn. But that still leaves you with a small number of concurrent connections. If you want to have long connections, for something like long polling or websockets, then being limited to one request per CPU core seems a little sketchy.

Mind you, it could just be that I take high concurrency for granted. I build most web stuff on Node or Clojure, but now that I think about it, apps that require long quiet connections are actually not the norm.

happyslobro··on Show HN: A flask app to make dashboards, easily
Does anyone have experience running Flask at scale? I used it once, for a small internal reporting service, and was shocked to find that it was designed to process only a single request at a time, per process. Is this a problem in the real world, or do decent caching rules and query design render it a non issue?

What do flask apps do when they want a live connection to the client, or need to serve a heavy (slow) request? Communicate with a Node websocket server over a queue, and share a database?

I don't mean to disparage Flask. Their goal is to make it simple to stand up site with minimal boilerplate or bloat, and they succeeded at that.

Not sure why this is getting downvoted. Distractions suck - having a system to manage them is good. Pushing people to use it is necessary.
happyslobro··on Scientists Watch Thoughts Form in the Brain
Agreed, human equivalent AI is probably several hundreds of years off, at best. but we don't need anything that sophisticated to trigger an "overlords" scenario.

I'm picturing something like a very good legal AI, being abused by a foreign state's hackers to ensure the incarceration of political opponents, in preparation for a coup. We're not far off from that being a plausible scenario now, but if we all had the benefit of a personal legal AI, or access to a collective legal AI, then it would be a lot harder for anyone to use the legal system against an individual opponent, as a simple weapon.

Or, more practically, an interrogator could just remind you of a time when you logged in to a particular account, and then try to capture a password as you relive the memory.

This is what will make the difference between us becoming the cybernetic overlords, and us getting crushed underneath of them. Whatever powers we grant to the machines, it is critical that we also take these powers for ourselves.

happyslobro··on Facebook’s Point System Fails to Close Diversity Gap
Based on my own anecdotal experience with hiring developers, the m/f ratio is highly unbalanced before our own biases even come into play. A while ago, we had a recruiting agent helping us to find candidates, based solely on a list of technical criteria. She (yes, she) sent us almost only men, a dozen or two of them. The one exception was a woman who choked on the fizzbuzz test. That was actually really saddening.
happyslobro··on Facebook’s Point System Fails to Close Diversity Gap
TE: under represented, SM: over represented, at my uni, anyway.

This whole thing is way overblown, imo. If, for some reason, far more women want to be doctors than engineers, then good for them. The last thing we need are grumpy doctors who treat their patients like machines, or bored engineers who make a special snowflake out of each server.

Imagine how ridiculous it would be, if when I was enrolling in uni, an advisor had said something along the lines of "Are you sure you wouldn't rather be a doctor? Because we need more male doctors, and the engineering fields are way over their quota for males. In 4 years, you might not be able to get a job in that field, unless you discover that you are actually a woman in a man's body."

happyslobro··on Facebook is building its own Steam-style desktop gaming platform with Unity
Yep, if there was ever a game that deserved a custom game engine, it would be Kerbal Space Program. The version of Unity that they used constrained them to 3.5 gb, and 32 bit floating point coordinates, in a game that deserves a true scale solar system.

I keep hearing that double precision floats for coordinates are unrealistic because of the optimisations that are available only for 32 bit floats, but I am willing to make serious sacrifices to free myself from the Spheres of Influence and the Orbital Railroad of Destiny; the real solar system mod forces a full scale environment, and even though the visual geometry is off by roughly a metre from the physical geometry, I still consider it to be an improvement.

Facebook. Unity. Yuck.

I'm sure it will make them a killing, though (not sarcasm)

happyslobro··on Justice Department says it will end use of private prisons
International terrorism makes great money for the military complex, when a good customer uses it as an excuse for an invasion. And then employment goes up, people focus away from the domestic problems, politicians get their kickbacks without sacrificing an election, you've heard this story a million times...
happyslobro··on Justice Department says it will end use of private prisons
The problem with engineering our way to a utopia, or at least, a humane government and economy, is determining who gets to write the specs that the engineers implement. It basically the same problem of deciding who should govern us, and how much of our own autonomy we should delegate to them. We're still going to have the same problems with a technocracy, that we already have with representative democracy.

You could stash a helpful little Asimo in the trunk. It would be like a trunkmonkey, except without the tire iron ;) But that could also be a far, dystopian-future option: agile I-Robot style bots that leaps out of the trunk to beat down anyone who tries to jack you when you stop to charge your battery.

I have a mental image of a slow, but patient Asimo trying to winch a wheelless Jeep back onto a dirt road, in a soaking wet tropical jungle, like that scene in Jurassic Park. Meanwhile, the occupants get eaten. Asimo has no event handler for that situation, and continues working patiently to get the car back on the road. He does not smell interesting to the raptors, who leave after their meal.
