happymellon··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
Yes, the bacteria target mosquito larve.

Though:

- It won't stop breeding in other standing water

- Depending on where you live, it could decimate the food source of other animals

- It attacks all mosquito's not just blood suckers

- I understand that there are conflicting reports on its effects on amphibians. I'm not sure how reliable the negative reviews are, or if it is "big citronella" sourced scare, but you may want to be cautious of which water sources you use them in.

happymellon··on Nearly 200 people under observation after Irkutsk lab worker dies from plague
So it's not improbable research lab that was testing off runs from a wet market found the stuff they were searching for?
happymellon··on Docker has always used microVMs (well since 2016)
Running all the containers with a shared kernel...

Yeah, if you are going to run Linux software on Mac or Windows then you'll need a VM. But security is not the reason for a VM.

> cannot ever get funding from the US for research on modified viruses.

So a guy who disagreed with the official CIA stance has been barred from obtaining funding for research from the US.

I mean, that just makes them seem more trustworthy.

Oh.

> I recently heard a scientist use a phrase something along the lines of “when two extraordinarily improbably events occur together, there is probably a connection”.

Dumbest thing I've heard today.

Ever since we started studying autism, we found it! Therefore studying causes autism.

Docker is a shared kernel.

So I can't comment on the raytraced experience because I don't bother with the raytracing, however I found AND worked out of the box on day one multiple times now. However RT benchmarks from January show it neck and neck.

https://www.techspot.com/news/110999-new-benchmarks-show-lin...

With significant improvements still incoming.

happymellon··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
> cos-play Tony Stark was inside his head

> I mean, do you think his Iron Man 2 cameo was random?

How did you make that jump? Billionaire wants to be viewed as Tony Stark, and then appears in an Iron Man film. He provided access to SpaceX for sets on the condition that he was in the film, much like Trump and Home Alone 2.

> he was generally liked across the board

I didn't say that. Before Twitter and his absolute detachment from reality, his backing of Tesla made him liked but his memes were never considered funny, and always cringe.

happymellon··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
At least in the UK, if I overpay my taxes HMRC will issue a refund.

I can even give them all my tax money, but if I also give them a list of items they deem to be a tax deduction, they will give me my money back. I don't even need to really ask for it except by putting it in the paperwork. I don't need to say "and therefore I believe I have overpaid by £X".

happymellon··on RSS Feeds for Last.fm
I don't see how this relates to anything the parent comment talked about.
happymellon··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
I don't know anyone who thought he was a funny memer man. And definitely cos-play Tony Stark was inside his head.

It was always the other way around, he was okay because he pursued improving road technology doing the things we want but car manufacturers refused. He stopped doing that and was only a Nazi waving, drug addled, idiot and is treated as such.

happymellon··on What reversing, modernising old games tells us about the economic impact of AI
So your argument is that cloning is such a low bar, that LLMs have solved coding by making innovation or new products not worth anyone's time?

That's not really what AI Boosters mean by "solving coding".

To add to this, how do I turn off all the AI nagging crap in Chrome?

So it still seems like Firefox is the better option.

I'm trying to think of the number of projects that consisted of:

The work has already been done. Recreate this to be identical but just in a different programming language.

I'm going to say never.

happymellon··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
No. They kept trying to push it over here.

It was always grim, bitter, but "oh so pretty".

happymellon··on The smart home graveyard is getting crowded
> Home Assistant won't read the state of them so they're lacking in integration, but the plus was that caused me to not set up Home Assistant. Not making a fragile computer a single point of failure and not tying my whole house to one shared-fate system with all the failure modes of a small scale full stack SaaS gave me a couple more nines of reliability.

My light switches integrate with Home Assistant, but I can just press the button or turn the knob to dim. Home Assistant Zigbee is there as a bonus, not the sole way of doing things and certainly not a single point of failure.

happymellon··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
What are you talking about?

If they are driving then they are currently potentially spending a couple of hundred pounds a month on fuel for a subcompact car. We are breaching the monthly cost of a car loan to move to electric purely in the cost of petrol.

happymellon··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
Its bizarre the hate your getting for this comment.

You can get a used Hyundai Kona EV from Hyundai for under £15k.

https://used.hyundai.co.uk/en/used-car-search/hyundai/kona/k...

Even going off your £18k price, a car loan search shows it would be under £200 per month. Not sure where they pulled £600 from.

But filling up my wife's compact Peugeot 208 (I think?) was £75 over the weekend. Filling up twice is almost the same monthly cost as buying a larger electric SUV.

It definitely seems like it would be worth investigating your options.

happymellon··on Video CDs Break Windows Explorer
This is sadly so relateable.

I feel like half my job these days is deciding which of the high/critical "security bugs" identified by someone's LLM is worth pushing back on because:

A. It isn't a bug, and just because it found a property with a similar name, perhaps it is an older feature flag and shouldn't be used as a default for customer accounts.

B. If I push back on all of these non-issues, I'll never have any time to get real work done. Of course the logging filters aren't checking and masking SSNs the app doesn't work with SSNs.

happymellon··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
They have many revenue streams from Android. The play store revenue is only a small part.

And we know they are not spending $30 billion on their SDKs.

happymellon··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
Ah yes, Google historically lost money from Android.
happymellon··on If we do not stop to help each other, what do we become?
> accelerate your learning

Thats a pretty bold position to take.

I find asking a question about whether an application should be doing what it is doing, and getting someone's braindead response of "Claude says it does this..." shows that people aren't learning. I know what it is doing, I can read an IF statement, I don't need someone to spit out 3 paragraphs of unrelated nonsense.

With Claude people aren't learning. They aren't even reading their copy/pasta response to see if it relates to the question.

happymellon··on Socialism's Positive Rating Tops 40% for First Time
Cooperatives have nothing to do with capitalism. It is a democratic process for workers to control the organisation. Which may or may not have to fit into a capitalist society, but it is very much a socialist institution by definition.

Are you sure you understand what you are arguing?

https://www.uk.coop/understanding-co-operatives

happymellon··on Two Git ignore files nobody told me about
Nah, I generate dependency trees from gradle because of the crappy way current $job has aggressive transient dependency scanning and I can't stand just updating someone else's transient dependency without validating that there isn't at least a new version of whatever pulled it in.

I have dependency_tree globally excluded because it is my unique naming convention. Actually it might just be my unique approach because other people don't seem to mind having 1000 overrides for libraries they don't use.

happymellon··on Socialism's Positive Rating Tops 40% for First Time
Cooperatives are certainly an implementation of socialism.

What makes you think that they aren't?

Unix certification requires things like case sensitive file systems, which MacOS can do, but doesn't so they had to supply a special configuration for certification.

So no. The MacOS you use is not Unix.

happymellon··on Apple Mac mini review
Ditto.

Lenovo contribute to Linux, and Apple is relatively hostile.

Look at how they break the GPU driver interfaces, and explain to me how that it isn't hostile.
