even better
hans_mueller··on Sugar industry withheld possible evidence of cancer link 50 years ago
no, switch to xylitol.
hans_mueller··on Mitmproxy – Open-source console-based proxy
I'd say, it's not just a web based interface, it also is a console.
hans_mueller··on How to get enough protein without meat
Bingo
hans_mueller··on Slaughterbots: Stop Autonomous Weapons [video]
technically there is nothing new in this clip. People have been singled out and murdered for since we exist and sometimes nobody is singled out but everybody killed with a bomb. nonetheless there is something undeniably creepy and unsettling about being killed by a soulless machine.
hans_mueller··on Slaughterbots: Stop Autonomous Weapons [video]
a hydrogen bomb has never been used.
hans_mueller··on Slaughterbots: Stop Autonomous Weapons [video]
to develop countermeasures is always way harder than developing an assaulting technology. like firing a rocket is easy, but catching it mid flight is very difficult.

it also seems that most people are too optimistic with regards to involvement of robots and ai in war. first of all an asymmetric kill power distribution will lead to asymmetric war anyway - that's what is referred to as terrorism. if an opponent has no chance fighting a 1on1 battle they will resort to planting bombs in malls. and the idea that robots Will fight for humans is also very naive because if the robots are done on one side then humans will be back fighting.
hans_mueller··on Germany replaces US as country with best international image
the Bürgerämter are an issue in all large German towns. Hamburg is a catastrophe and Munich is also maxing out its capacity since mass immigration.
hans_mueller··on Germany replaces US as country with best international image
you definitely have a point. but Berlin is still without doubt am exceptionally exciting town to live in. and public transportation is just as broken in Munich.
hans_mueller··on Germany replaces US as country with best international image
> I have almost nothing in common with the people of Alabama.

seriously? you have very much in common with them. you want clean water to drink and air to breath, healthy food to eat, peace, a non-corrupt and efficient government, safety, medical infrastructure and so on ...

hans_mueller··on A Chess Novice Challenged Magnus Carlsen
the text is not superbly written at all. it's an advertisement with lots of plot holes and utterly absurd formulations of any kind. just the sleep/sister analogy is so weird and pointless it made me cringe ...
hans_mueller··on The Paradise Papers: How Ridiculously Easy It Is for the Rich to Avoid Taxes
people from country A can only hide money in country B if the number of people from B hiding money in A is not significant to the government or society of B and vice versa. otherwise A and B would sooner or later have an agreement to avoid this because both will make more money then through taxes. that's what happend with Switzerland and the EU.
hans_mueller··on Ask HN: What tech were you convinced would take the world by storm but didn't?
as my fake username suggests - I'm a German.
hans_mueller··on Ask HN: What tech were you convinced would take the world by storm but didn't?
yes, but the English spoken by most non-natives is actually something like an Esperanto. the pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar is almost normalized and an artificial dialect. i think English is a very good compromise. the only problem are French people and other communities who disdain English for patriotical, historical, or political reasons.
hans_mueller··on Ask HN: What tech were you convinced would take the world by storm but didn't?
FG probably would allow advertisers to bypass FB products for identification of potential customers and hence is not in best financial interest of FB.

this is how I met my until now best friend about 15 years ago.
hans_mueller··on Why do we care more about benefit ‘scroungers’ than billions lost to the rich?
the scroungers are visible while the rich are rather abstract and invisible.
hans_mueller··on New Orleans man locked up nearly 8 years awaiting trial, then case gets tossed
sadly that's just positive thinking. most people don't toughen up, they just break and maybe commit suicide.
hans_mueller··on Did you buy that latte 2 hours ago? Think about leaving the coffee shop
A coffee shop is not public space. It's a private space opened to the public under conditions defined by the owner of the shop.
hans_mueller··on Drink Cheap Wine
>Europeans seem perfectly comfortable cracking open a 1-euro tetra-pak of wine for guests. Germans, for example, pay just $1.79 on average for a bottle of wine.

I stopped reading here, b/c that's simply not correct. It's true that most people don't spend more than 5 Euro on wine and that you get great wine around that. But except for students getting ready for a binge, nobody considers tetra packed alcoholic grape juice as wine.

hans_mueller··on Take the Money and Run
I also wondered about this fast-food-soup or restaurant dichotomy. You can eat quite cheap and fast while healthy - f.x. full-wheat bread with avocado and onion.

hans_mueller··on Germans, still outraged by NSA spying, learn their country may have helped
Spiegel went from investigative journalism decades ago to publishing very shallow and (in case of its online version) click-baity articles. Süddeutsche is certainly more insightful.

But at least it is safe to say that Spiegel is not much politically biased on a whole.

hans_mueller··on Germans, still outraged by NSA spying, learn their country may have helped
> Note that Der Spiegel is considered a top notch news source.

By who? Certainly not by me ...

hans_mueller··on “Flower of Battle,” a combat manual created in the first decade of the 1400s
Not sure why - but this looks as fake as a six dollar bill ...
hans_mueller··on Artificial-Intelligence Experts Are in High Demand

hans_mueller··on What happens after you’re arrested at a protest in New York
Well, Italians aren't just very patient at organising - so police will deal with those situations more impulsively:

"Once arrested, protesters, including five Britons, were taken to a police barracks where they were beaten again, sprayed with asphyxiating gas, threatened with rape and forced to sing fascist-era songs."

hans_mueller··on Online Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course
> whether they live in Moscow, Idaho or Moscow, Russia

That's a funny way to put it.

I can say from personal experience that actively learning to be mindful - meaning present and sensing - instead of constantly being obsessed with thoughts and mental picturing of the future and the past - has a very positive impact on my well-being and that of the people in my environment who I communicate and interact with.

I am definitely going to give this course a try.
