hanley··on Why I Stopped Selling My Time for a Living
Not to nitpick, but I don't see any physical activity in that schedule even though you say you're into bodybuilding and need 6 meals a day. If that schedule is literally how your days go then you probably don't need 6 meals.

There's a typo in the Request Invite to Python 101 modal. It should say: The initial class size will be limited to 20 students.

You should also check out Chapul Bars [1], they are the original cricket flour bar. The Chaco bar is very tasty, I haven't tried the other flavors yet. Unfortunately, Chapul doesn't seem to be on their marketing/media hype game like Exo is.

There's something really weird going on with http://sidebar.io/new. When using Disconnect [1] in Firefox, it blocks over 1000 requests to Twitter and just keeps growing, as if Sidebar makes a new request every time Disconnect blocks it. Whatever is going on it causes Firefox to lock up repeatedly.

hanley··on Show HN: I made a site that lets you bet against Bitcoin Hash Rate Volatility
From the 'How It Works' page [1] - " During the betting round, payout odds will change depending on how many BTCs are placed on either side at any given time. Payout odds are finalized once the betting round closes."

hanley··on Find out how many social shares a URL has?
If I plug in a YouTube link will it also tally all of the YouTube link variations for that video? For example, if I put in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE3fmFTtP9g, will it also include the shortened http://youtu.be/wE3fmFTtP9g in the tally?

Double Edged Razors are definitely a win in terms of shave quality and cost. I bought a year supply of blades on Amazon for under $20.
hanley··on Center of the universe
Is that not allowed? People post their own articles and blog posts here all the time.
hanley··on Ask HN: Have you made a profit mining Bitcoin?
I think it's still stealing since you don't own the hardware and don't pay for the power usage. Therefore the mined coins should be property of the department/school/etc. and would help them lower costs even more. Unless you have permission to keep profits obtained from the usage of those machines.

hanley··on FAA to lift mobile shut-down rule
In the past few years I've noticed this pattern more and more - flight attendant asks passenger to turn off iPhone, passenger simply pushes the top button to turn off the screen, flight attendant accepts this. So flight attendants either don't know or don't care that turning the screen off doesn't turn off the device.

I'd be willing to bet that most people don't bother to actually turn off devices / switch to airplane mode. On a flight last month I even watched a guy turn off the screen on his iPad when asked to shut it off, then as soon as the attendant walked away he turned it on again and continued to use it throughout take-off.

hanley··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
Why would someone use this instead of Weather Underground, Weather.com, WeatherSpark, Forecast.io, etc.? It doesn't seem very specific to climbing and there doesn't seem to be much room for growth since Mountain Project is already the go-to site for route and community information.

Looks like this chart is just the US. I'd like to see other regional charts, and a global one as well.
hanley··on Black student forced to participate in slavery reenactment
I went to Nature's Classroom (the camp mentioned in the article) sometime around 2001. I remember the slavery re-enactment, but don't remember any use of the n-word or threats of whipping. We mostly just ran around in the woods one evening and hid from "slave owners" behind buildings. I imagine there was some education going on but I don't really remember.

I never considered at the time if re-enacting slavery was appropriate for a 5th grader, and hadn't really thought about the re-enactment until reading about it now.

The term "wiring money" still has a connotation of being complicated, probably from all the movies and TV shows that mention wiring money in exchange for hostages, etc. I wish people would just refer to it as a bank transfer.

hanley··on Why I Changed My Mind On Weed
"Only weed is _much_ easier to get hooked onto, because it's much cheaper than alcohol, and you don't need much more than rolling paper (as opposed to refrigerator, soft drinks etc)."

Stop spewing bullshit. You clearly don't know what you're talking about. A gram of marijuana costs $10-20 and that will get 4 people properly stoned with some even left over. Meanwhile, I could go to a liquor store and buy a handle of shitty vodka for under $20. A handle will get you 40+ shots, which will definitely get more than 4 people drunk.

hanley··on Why I Changed My Mind On Weed
What an insightful idea - HELP people instead of just locking them up in timeout only to release them back into the public with the same (or worse) problems that they started with.
hanley··on Why I Changed My Mind On Weed
I don't necessarily disagree with your post but you should be careful with generalizations that aren't backed up with evidence. "The US has the most pot smokers/capita by a long shot" sounds a lot like some assumption you just made up based on your own personal experience. A study like marijuana users per capita is inherently difficult because people don't like admitting that they partake in illegal activity. The only statistic to go on for that study is how many people were arrested for marijuana crimes, which only shows how many people were caught breaking a law, not how many people use.

Also I think your marijuana/drug law knowledge is a little behind. There are a number of countries in Europe and elsewhere who are changing to more relaxed drug policies similar to the progress in the US (including Portugal who effectively decriminalized all drugs in 2001).
