hanlec··on Pencil – Multi-platform GUI Prototyping and Wireframing
If someone who used Pencil could share what they've liked at it, that could be more helpful than the current documentation.
hanlec··on Text-only NPR
This is the new "Instant Articles".
hanlec··on How I Hacked My Way from TC to YC
I'm overly impressed with those being able to build a project by the end of a hackathon. In my life I haven't had many chances to participate to one, but I'm also the more methodical type (you can call that over engineering and I wouldn't argue on it).

Any advice on how I could switch to this mode from time to time?

hanlec··on Taking Inspiration from Failed Projects
This seems to be more about thinking about timing of a project. What has changed since this project failed that could make it successful today.
hanlec··on How Marissa Mayer Mobilized Yahoo
My impression is that the biggest impact MM had since becoming CEO of Yahoo! is the change in perception at the level of Wall Street, journalists, and analysts. "She must know what to do. She's been so high in Google ranks" By no means I'm implying that MM doesn't have a plan and some signs can be seen here and there from a customer perspective: better iOS apps, a budget for Flickr, more users through the acquisition of Tumblr, etc. But at the end of the day, what matters for Yahoo! the company is this:

> In eight of the nine quarters that Yahoo has completed since her appointment, its display-advertising revenue has seen a year-over-year decrease.

hanlec··on Anders Hejlsberg – What brought about the birth of the CLR? (2004)
According to Wikipedia [1] ("which never lies"):

> He was the original author of Turbo Pascal and the chief architect of Delphi. He currently works for Microsoft as the lead architect of C#[1] and core developer on TypeScript.

hanlec··on Why Is Mayonnaise Loved and Hated So Deeply?
Maybe it's using only the egg white and not the yolk?
hanlec··on Piper Pied Imitates HBO’s Silicon Valley and Creates Lossless Image Compression
I'm tempted to assume that the lossless part is coming from the reporting side (probably influenced by the TV show too), rather than the project itself.
hanlec··on Etsy CTO on Its Conservatively Crafty Tech Philosophy
> One way Etsy drives this kind of commitment to deep understanding that seems to underlie its technology choices, is limiting the number of tools it uses as a company. It would rather be the master of few tools than have a broad knowledge across many different ones.

Every large(-ish) company I know has pretty strict rules about the languages, frameworks, and tools used for the main products.

The more flexible of these do allow prototyping using a different toolsets. The ones that have a developer audience always experiment with new environments.

New tools and new processed get adopted over time, but in many cases the cycle they go through emulated pretty closely the adoption cycle seen outside. Even if the new shinny toy syndrome is very strong in this field, this makes a lot of sense, as nobody really wants to throw away everything. (_While writing this I got to think about the numerous rewrites eBay has seen over years_).

> The company owns and operates its hardware and networks in its own datacenter. Part of the reason for avoiding the cloud is control, but not necessarily just from a security perspective as you might think. The real reason is Etsy personnel want to get under the hood and understand every aspect of every piece of technology the company controls.

I continue to be very curious about how polarizing the cloud remains.

hanlec··on Why Is Mayonnaise Loved and Hated So Deeply?
I still remember when I was a kid how everyone was teaching me how complicated making mayonnaise is. Years later, I was taught how to prepare it in minutes by dropping all the ingredients in a jar and using a mixer. Nobody could tell the difference.

(and yes, sign me under those that love mayo... actually I'm in the group of "can I have some extra mayo")

hanlec··on DocStore: Document Database for MySQL at Facebook [pdf]
I came here to post just this. Bret Taylor, one of the co-founders of FriendFeed, was CTO @ Facebook after the acquisition.

Also besides FBSON, most of what I've read in those slides looks like PostgreSQL's JSON support:

hanlec··on Rust Priorities after 1.0
After using Go for a couple of pet projects in the last couple of months, I came out bored. Many people seem to be quite excited about Rust. I'm setting up my (new) Emacs end for Rust.

Any cool projects I can take a look at?

hanlec··on L.A. school district ditches iPad curriculum
tl;dr There wouldn't have been enough eyes on this article if it correctly stated the issue is with Pearson and not the iPad or Apple.
hanlec··on Puppet 4 is now production-ready
I've kept an eye on this space---automation is not my day job--and I have to say that I still cannot put my finger on Puppet or Chef or Salt or Ansible.
hanlec··on OS X Reviewed
I don't know how many were in this camp, but with every OS X release I was more excited about reading Siracusa's review than upgrading.

While I started only with 10.3, I have found reading the older review as a fine page of OS X history. Maybe Siracusa these should become a book. Maybe Apple should move to OS 11.

hanlec··on Making Python 3 more attractive
You've probably read this over and over, but for me there were 2 reasons why Python 3 wasn't a top priority: 1) lack of support in some libraries --- this got a lot better; 2) lack of support on Google App Engine.

On the other hand, I didn't find the new features in Python 3 appealing enough to make me fight the above drawbacks.

Last but not least, while I use most of the tools I've developed in Python on a daily basis, they are just that: tools meant to make my life nicer.

hanlec··on The IRS guide to debugging XML errors in your rejected tax return
Ridiculous. I'm wondering how large was the budget and who got the largest stake of it for spitting all this useless errors (_nb_ it's still better than failing silently)
hanlec··on Presidential candidate website tech, compared
CloudFlare 3 - Fast.ly 1

PHP 3 - Python 1 :-(

GoDaddy 2 :-((

(well, I guess you can tell what PL I prefer)

hanlec··on Playback Video Player
The live streaming of the BT sounds like a very interesting feature. One that could lead to possible improvements to those sites hosting videos behind thousands of ads.
hanlec··on StackNotes
Are there some sort of plugins that link the source with the notes? If there's no direct link between these, how do you remember you made some notes on a particular snippet?
hanlec··on Elementary OS Freya Released
I saw today on HN PapyrOS. Anyone can explain the difference between the two? (leaving aside that PapyrOS is still unreleased)
hanlec··on PapyrOS, based on Arch Linux
What are the advantages of PapyrOS versus say elementary OS?
hanlec··on Alternote: Alternative Evernote Client for Mac Goes Golden Master
I always wished Evernote would store my text as text and Alternote seems to be the first tool that (at least tricks me---in the good sense) that I can use Markdown to enter my notes.
