On this post specifically or HN on the whole? ;)

hanklazard··on Norman Foster's steroidal new skyscraper is an affront to the New York skyline
Sure, I was just giving a different perspective. Congrats to Norman Foster for having such strong opinions about architecture, I also have an opinion and in this case it runs contrary to his.
hanklazard··on Norman Foster's steroidal new skyscraper is an affront to the New York skyline
What a strange article—it really goes out of its way to just try to insult every element of this building. It looks pretty incredible to me and I’m glad I live in a country where people push the boundaries of what can be built.
hanklazard··on Proto Rig and Proto Fleet: A paradigm shift in Bitcoin mining
Looks like nice hardware. And great to see the software being released as FOSS.
hanklazard··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
I’ve been using obsidian also, I just use the daily note with some tweaks. Works great with todo’s autopopulated in new notes until they are checked off, deadlines, etc. Only downside is that I do pay for their sync functionality since iOS makes it very annoying otherwise. I’ll check out your plugin though, sounds useful.
hanklazard··on GitHub is no longer independent at Microsoft after CEO resignation
What are you using for git repos?
hanklazard··on Ubiquiti launches UniFi OS Server for self-hosting
> There's no better prosumer option - good, bad or otherwise

That’s why I just had to buy new Ubiquity gear two weeks ago after an update bricked an older ubiquity switch and router (purchased in 2019). Spent a ton of time on the console but both were stuck in some sort of boot loops and were not salvageable.

Ended up buying replacements from ubiquity, but I feel pretty dumb buying new stuff from the company that just screwed my weekend and wallet. I could also swear that I had auto updates off for firmware but maybe that part was on me.

hanklazard··on OpenAI’s Windsurf deal is off, and Windsurf’s CEO is going to Google
Cursor at 20$/M is pretty great
hanklazard··on Gridfinity: The modular, open-source grid storage system
Yeah his video was linked on the page and i found him incredibly entertaining. Agreed, he’s a very clever writer.
hanklazard··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
I migrated all my pocket saves to a self-hosted Karakeep (previously Hoarder) instance a few months ago. No issues with the import and I’ve been happy with using it thus far.

hanklazard··on Fluoxetine promotes metabolic defenses to protect from sepsis-induced lethality
I am absolutely floored by the depth of this paper. They really explored so much of the phenomenon and were able to dissect much of the mechanism.

This is also such a fascinating example of the body's inflammatory response to a pathogen being one of the major drivers of mortality. I suspect we'll find this to be the case in many more disease processes in the future.

hanklazard··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
re: up XX number of points, I haven't bothered for many years, but that sounds like NPR's "All Things Considered" or "Marketplace". Always drove me nuts too and does nothing to help people understand financial markets.
hanklazard··on BorgBackup 2.0 supports Rclone – over 70 cloud providers in addition to SSH
I previously used Borg and didn’t have any bad experiences, but in the end, just switched my server over to zfs. Simple, straight-forward backup tools with native snapshots, and bit-rot resistance.
hanklazard··on A Canadian lobby group is promoting "widespread adoption of age verification"
Sure let’s start with age verification and get the infra and social expectation in place for blacklists on *any* parameter they choose (for the sake of “safety”, of course).
hanklazard··on Home Assistant blocked from integrating with Garage Door opener API
That project looks great! Now the issue is finding a Chamberlain or Liftmaster opener without myQ built-in. Or maybe I just don’t have to activate it.
hanklazard··on The Billionaire Who Controls Your Medical Records (2021)
I’m sorry, that’s terrible. Best wishes to her and your whole family.
hanklazard··on The Billionaire Who Controls Your Medical Records (2021)
It’s total shit.

I’m rooting for something like this in the long term: https://github.com/openemr/openemr

hanklazard··on How I installed TrueNAS on my new ASUSTOR NAS
I’m probably not as proficient with ZFS as you are, but for me, the basic Ubuntu LTS option you mentioned has been great. I was sick of all of the GUI and bloated features of unraid. Then I tried TrueNas and it was okay, but in the end I realized that all of the GUI abstraction was just getting in the way. I really just wanted ZFS features and some docker apps.

I think if I needed a lot of VMs I might go with Proxmox, but yeah, the bare bones Ubuntu has been really elegant and stable since I built it a few months ago.

hanklazard··on Reddit App – Suspicious high number of recent 5 star, one word reviews
One of the reasons I stopped listening.
hanklazard··on Get Phones Out of Schools Now
let them have a simple communication device. they don't need tiktok and instagram in school.
hanklazard··on Get Phones Out of Schools Now
How about "get fully capable smart phones out of schools now"? This safety argument could still be fulfilled with a cheap, simple phone that allows the student to text / call 9-1-1 and a handful of trusted contacts.
hanklazard··on Young adults in the U.S. are reaching key life milestones later than in the past
“Whole lot of girls with older parents it seems.”

That’s an interesting observation. Are you aware of any data on that?

hanklazard··on Adobe Tells Users They Can Get Sued for Using Old Versions of Photoshop (2019)
This is very helpful. I haven't heard of Affinity before but I am really excited to try it, especially given the one-time cost model. Seems like Affinity + Capture One could be a great non-subscription pairing for photo work.
hanklazard··on Shutting down my legal torrent site after 17 years
The right to bank should be enshrined in the laws of free societies. I don't care what the business is or what people's moral qualms might be--as long as it is not breaking the law, there is no excuse for cutting off this critical business infrastructure.

+1 for this project and I’m currently testing out the built-in podcast server
hanklazard··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
I listen to a ton of tech, current events/news and finance podcasts. Their radio programming seemed to weaken over the last few years so I lost touch. Are there any NPR podcasts worth listening to ?(asking honestly, looking for recs)
hanklazard··on Fed and FDIC discussing backstop to make SVB depositors whole, stem contagion
Businesses aren't making upside by putting their working capital in a bank checking account. Mine was making like 0.1%, it's negligible. I would be happy to socialize that upside for higher limits on deposit protection.

Equity and bond holders are a totally different group of people, they are investors in that bank. They are explicitly taking risk on the bank as an investment, not as a basic piece of their financial plumbing.

hanklazard··on Fed and FDIC discussing backstop to make SVB depositors whole, stem contagion
This is referring specifically to deposits not equity or corporate bond holders, management, etc. The depositors are not making a sizable returns, they’re just wanting to keep their money in a bank account.
