haney··on Ask HN: Who's an AirBnB host?
I'm an Airbnb Super Host, I own my home and my girlfriend does too. We eventually decided to move in together so my place is fully converted into a rental unit, I've taken everything that I care about out of the unit except for one closet which I added a locking handle to.

I also purchased a two sets of white linens that I bleach between rentals, having twice as many as I need for a stay and having the ability to bleach out stains has made dealing with linens easier. I have a professional cleaning crew that handles everything else.

I have an August lock that integrates with AirBnB that automatically sets up access during the guest's stay. I also have a backup lock box for when guests have trouble with that. In general it's been pretty good.

I have had a few issues where guests are expecting a townhouse to have hotel style amenities, different people have different expectations of what AirBnB is supposed to provide and for what price (I'm significantly cheaper than hotels in the area). For the most part I feel like people read the descriptions and reviews on places to find somewhere that meets their expectations but it would be helpful if there was some kind of "service level" ranking that had a policy associated with it or something.

haney··on Ask HN: What tech companies do you invest in?
FB, They have access to great consumer information that will continue to make them a valuable advertising company for a long time AND they've continued to expand into other markets (VR) while making smart defensive acquisitions to protect their core.
haney··on Show HN: Kyso – an easy way to share Jupyter notebooks
We use AirBnB's Knowledge Repo project[1][2] for things like this at my company. I love the idea of making it easier to deploy things like this though.

haney··on Show HN: ProximityHash – Geohashes in Proximity
I haven't used this specific library, but it's common to want to convert lat/lon into a single dimension where sorting the hash gives nearby locations. This is helpful for lookups/indexing/caching geospatial data. This appears to solve some of those problems.
haney··on Show HN: ProximityHash – Geohashes in Proximity
Are you familiar with the S2 library for mapping lat/lon into a 1d space? (http://blog.christianperone.com/2015/08/googles-s2-geometry-...) any idea what the tradeoffs would be between this and S2?
haney··on Turning Off GitHub Issues (2016)
> Think you found a bug? Fork the repo, add a failing test

It seems like this would also really help with duplicated error reports which can be burdensome to sift through, and hey if someone else comes along and has the time to fix the bug in question they now have a great means to validate their fix by.

haney··on Turning Off GitHub Issues (2016)
For this, I've seen several large projects push discussions to discourse or stack overflow, which are much better-suited mediums for discussion IMHO.
haney··on We Don't Need No Stinkin' Databases
You're assuming quite a lot about the use case. I personally don't have a problem that's solved by this particular utility, but it's not uncommon for our analytics team to use pandas to join CSV files on their way into our data warehouse (or to otherwise reshape small datasets). I could definitely see the utility in plain text relational tools.
haney··on Ask HN: Who is firing?
I read this post as more "what companies are winding down in a way that might indicate that their teams need new jobs", but I might have misunderstood OP's meaning.
haney··on Uber Driver Tip-Hustling Schemes
I'd argue it's easier to not tip when you have the option to tip in the App. If you're transacting with cash the driver knows if / when you aren't going to tip them. It'd be next level aggressive to sit and watch if you tip the driver on the app before you get out of the car. Personally, I'm fine to tip since the normal barrier to tipping for me is having cash, but either way in app tipping seems to make things easier.
haney··on Show HN: Singer – Simple, Composable Open Source ETL
The most similar thing I've found is Apache Beam[1] which allows you to run ETL code on multiple engines but doesn't necessarily come with off the shelf integrations for commercial products. As far as "how ETL is done today" it's definitely going through changes Airflow[2] is a popular open source tool that can run ETL pipelines but it's more of a task runner so again you're writing your own extraction and loading logic for things off the shelf CRMs and Accounting tools. I'm excited to not have to write extraction scripts for third party tools that I'm sure other people have also written. Very cool project.

haney··on America’s Fastest-Growing Loan Category Has Eerie Echoes of Subprime Crisis
Title is definitely a bit overblown, while it sounds like there's a definite problem with the incentive structure that incentives people to sell loans that borrowers can't afford, 22B isn't close to the size of housing bonds during '08. Further peppering the article with comments about it being the 'fastest growing category' don't take into account the fact that the absolute size isn't really that large. It sounds like someone should take a look at better regulating these loans, but the sky isn't falling.
haney··on Jest – Painless JavaScript Testing
I've been working on a React Native project and I really enjoy how easy jest is to use. It's hard to tell from this post though, is there something new/specific about it? Or are we all just agreeing that it's awesome?
haney··on Amazon Aurora Update – PostgreSQL Compatibility
Very cool, can anyone tell if it supports PostGIS?
haney··on Show HN: Nando – Team Meetings Done Well
I'd be way more likely to continue through if there was information/screenshots before I was asked to input information. As it currently stands I don't know why I'm inputting information and what benefit it is going to provide me.
haney··on Ask HN: Team for Hire?
I think I speak for everyone when I say that we miss having you in Chattanooga.
haney··on Too Many Tools and Frameworks (2015)
I agree that there is a high risk of project abandonment and it is frustrating that we haven't yet found a consensus around javascript frameworks. But, I would argue that Rails became dominant because it was so much better than the alternatives, we're in the messy part of the cycle where we're not sure what the next great/common/standard library or framework is going to be, but on a long enough timeline I'm confident that the best abstractions/communities/frameworks/libraries will be the most popular, because they allow developers to produce the best things quickly. We're a part of the immune system that helps us to converge to that reality.
haney··on If You Want to Predict the Election, Use FiveThirtyEight.com
FiveThirtyEight also does a great podcast where they discuss the assumptions built into their model and as polls change over time or events happen in the election they explain the impact on their models. I've found it really educational for both politics and statistics.
haney··on Gender pay gap in modeling
I think they were referencing a scene in Zoolander.
haney··on Ask HN: What are the must-read books about economics/finance?
I'd highly recommend The Intelligent Investor.
haney··on Apple owns the world's largest hedge fund
I'm not sure it's accurate to call this a hedge fund? From a zero hedge article[1] (that also refers to it as a hedge fund)

> "it is all invested in ultra-safe securities."

If we take hedge fund to mean, "pool of less regulated money" then yes, but they're certainly not executing the sorts of strategies that are typically associated with hedge funds.

haney··on Hillary's IT guy asking Reddit how to cover up emails
There's now a post in /r/exchangeserver that's making fun of this old post[1], but is there a link to the original (or has the post been deleted?).

I'm still rather skeptical of things I read on /r/conspiracy.

haney··on Crawl the web for anything
Is the crawling actually taking place on the phone or is there a backend service that's grabbing data? If the phone is doing crawling I'd imagine this would nuke your battery.
haney··on You’re Not Invited
It's amazing how much fear of missing out motivates people. Exclusivity is a powerful motivator.
haney··on GNU Social
I'm disappointed that there's still not a popular federated social service like this. I know diaspora tried and that there are other projects that have attempted work like this. I know that they'll never work until they're simple enough that my mom can use them, but I wonder if something like tor2web for a decentralized social network could offer an entry point for users who didn't want to operate their own federated node. Can a decentralized social service grow large enough to be useful without a dedicated growth / marketing team?
haney··on [dead]
As a previous hiring manager I usually take the average of the range and then negotiate from there, so there's still some implicit anchoring going on.
haney··on [dead]
> TRICK: If you want to earn more, use this salesman tactic: never mention a price until the recruiter says how much she can pay.

I'd disagree a little on this one. I think that as a candidate you could make good use of the anchoring technique. If you establish a number that's friendly to you and then negotiate from there you're likely to end up in that ball park. If they throw out a number that's way below where you wanted to be it's hard to negotiate up much more (although perhaps, that's a good signal that this position is not up to your salary requirements).

haney··on Netflix Orders Bill Nye Talk Show
Very cool, typically when I hear 'talk show' I think of something that's going to be released on a regular interval (daily or weekly) is Netflix moving away from it's bulk release schedule for shows?
haney··on [dead]
History will remember the day the world lost the headphone jack
haney··on Ask HN: Those 'employed' do you see no other resort?
I don't necessarily buy the notion that all companies treat their employees poorly. Start a company if you want to (I have before, and it was very freeing) but the world might not be quite as binary as you're seeing it right now.
