hammerbrostime··on Airtable raises $100M at a $1.1B valuation
Yes, Google has superb offline support for their suite of productivity apps
hammerbrostime··on Airtable raises $100M at a $1.1B valuation
I work in NYC. The most efficient form of transportation is the subway, and phone signals are not great down there. If you take a train out of the city, there are huge dead zones. There is at least an hour of my day that I am trying to be productive that I do not have good internet connections.
hammerbrostime··on Airtable raises $100M at a $1.1B valuation
Weird valuation. Ok app, had to write it off because of lack of offline support.

I'm surprised this isn't a non starter for more people/companies.

DragonBox Algebra is tons of fun.
hammerbrostime··on CEO’s Plan to Save Sears Would Hand His Hedge Fund $1B
The Staples near me seems the same. Just amazingly empty and dirty. They started shutting the little Staples shops in NYC in the last year too.

hammerbrostime··on Pioneer: A home for ambitious outsiders
Wow, what's with the agism by design?

<< Our goal is to build a decentralized network of YOUNG, creative and exceptionally motivated outsiders who don’t fit in to the traditional system. >>

hammerbrostime··on Art Is Becoming a Financial Product, and Blockchain Is Making It Happen
Digital paper-clips? Could you explain what that is? I didn't get any results via Google.
hammerbrostime··on Design for an Audience
It’s faster to draw a box then to code one. When still getting buy in from the team and testing your ideas with users, the ability to iterate quickly counts
hammerbrostime··on Three-day no-meeting schedule for engineers
Alternatively, I schedule 9-2 for every day as programming time. A company-wide policy though would be great, and having entire days blocked on or off for programming sounds like it would work much better than my method across timezones. However, having a couple of hours at the end of each day is super useful to keep collaboration with non engineers humming too.
hammerbrostime··on My best monitor hack
My computer glasses are prescription. Next time you get an eye exam you can just ask your doctor for a prescription for working at your computer. My vision up close was already pretty-darn good, but the prescription adds just a hint of clarity (I see the pixels now much more distinctly than I had before).
hammerbrostime··on My best monitor hack
At 34", my monitor is already pretty big. Also, my prescription glasses were pretty cheap @ $50 from eyebuydirect (including shipping).

I see an even bigger boost for the 2 hours I spend on the train during work days with my 15" laptop.

hammerbrostime··on The latest trend for tech interviews: Days of unpaid homework
You could pay serious candidates for their time spent on long assignments, and a think that would fix quite a lot.
hammerbrostime··on IBM Plex – A new typeface
Very funny, I viewed the page on my iPhone and the experience was a joy. Perhaps they overfit the experience for mobile?
hammerbrostime··on Show HN: Noderize – Create Node apps in 30 seconds
FYI Jest is great for Node too, not just React. Very happily using Jest for my non-React project right now.

hammerbrostime··on Show HN: TablePlus – A macOS client for relational databases
Wow, I am so excited about this app. I have to wonder, how come the market hasn't supported something like this in the past - or more specifically - why hasn't SequelPro thrived and evolved to eventually support Postgres? Are developers too cheap?

hammerbrostime··on WeWork is going to acquire Meetup
Tech meetup (please see my other response below)
hammerbrostime··on WeWork is going to acquire Meetup
Finding "a" space, e.g. for one or two events, is relatively easy. Finding a consistently scheduled space (e.g. "the second Wednesday of each month") at cheap/free is a whole other thing. Once you have a consistently scheduled space, getting speakers is rather easy, because you can schedule way out into the future. For example, a popular speaker may not be available in the next three months, but I could easily get that speaker for April if I already have my venue lined up.

The first meetup I had was a bit of a vicious cycle - we had no home, which made scheduling hard, which made getting speakers lined up hard.

The second meetup I ran started out a Pivotal Labs which was amazing. Free food, free drink, nice atmosphere, good location - and most importantly, we had "the second Wednesday of every month", which made scheduling ridiculously easy. Actually running the whole meetup was a level of magnitude easier after that. Current venue is also similarly awesome. I wouldn't go back to not having a regularly-scheduled venue.

hammerbrostime··on WeWork is going to acquire Meetup
Having run Meetups for the last ~4 years or so, with my current one being a nice size (~100/month attend), I can tell you the absolute biggest challenge for myself and for others is getting a good affordable/free space to run the events. As WeWork has so much prime real estate, I can easily see the Meetups being a natural feeder to get more people exposed to their spaces, and also to create community events for those that rent. Seems like a nice opportunity for synergy here. Hope it goes well. Two great NYC companies!
hammerbrostime··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
I'm surprised by the amount of negativity about the deal here on HN. It seems like an excellent match. I could see LinkedIn as an asset for Microsoft anywhere in the realms of work collaboration and HR. No other social network besides LinkedIn comes close to complimenting MicroSoft's wheelhouse of enterprise utility.
hammerbrostime··on 10th Anniversary of JQuery
I remember when it was announced - I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It was announced in a smallish room, maybe about 25 people. At BarCamp, if I remember how it worked, everyone who showed up was required to talk about a subject. It was as community-driven an event as any I've ever been to. Lots of amateur presenters.

There was a guy there that John Resig had shown jQuery to the night before, and the guy was just raving about it. And when John showed off jQuery, it just was damn impressive.

Wish I could remember more, its a bit of a hazy memory now! :)

hammerbrostime··on Anki – a program which makes remembering things easy
I love Anki, been using it for the last year. What has been most powerful for me, is that I no longer take standard notes when trying to learn a new topic. Instead, all of my notes are in "question" form, so that I can keep on top of it over time. The spaced repetition keeps my learning efforts efficient and keeps things from leaking out of my wetware memory.

The synchronization feature between devices has also proven to be very useful, as I use my laptop usually to put in new questions, but use the iPhone app to quiz myself whenever I have a few spare minutes during the day (waiting in line, walking to work, etc).

UI is a little wonky at times, but its features and flexibility more than makes up for it for a dedicated student.

hammerbrostime··on The Socratic Method: Teaching by Asking Instead of by Telling
I tried this out last year in my daughter's third grade class, and it was a total hoot. I still hear back about the event from time to time.
