halgir··on What if remote work didn’t mean working from home?
It sounds like you're the manager in this case, and that your intentions are genuine. But are you entirely sure that your team feels the same?

I've done similar, but in local restaurants during working hours. It's unfair to implicitly demand your team to donate free time, regardless how much you believe they should enjoy and appreciate it.

That aside, virtual options have come pretty close for us. Give everyone a budget to arrange their own food and either organize activities/games that your team will enjoy or just hang out.

halgir··on Why do older individuals have greater control of their feelings?
Surprisingly relevant to my post from last year, actually titled "Fucks are finite": https://halgir.com/fucks-are-finite/
halgir··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Thanks! Old Angry Birds muscle memory probably.

Found the high score, 1773.

halgir··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Best $1.99 I spent all morning.

Your score disappears on game over, so I didn't get a chance to see my exact high score. Somewhere in the 1,700s I think.

halgir··on Underwater Roundabout in the Faroe Islands
I drove through the new tunnel today, and this is exactly what the ventilation looks like. I noticed they spun very slowly, which is likely variable based on detected air quality.
halgir··on Underwater Roundabout in the Faroe Islands
Local sentiment is very positive. I'll be making my first trip through the tunnel tomorrow for last minute Christmas deliveries.
halgir··on Underwater Roundabout in the Faroe Islands
I think "depends" and "hefty" are arguable. The subsidy is currently at ~105M USD (and shrinking) on a GDP of ~3.2B USD.
halgir··on Underwater Roundabout in the Faroe Islands
I think he's referring to the fact that this tunnel is constructed by a Norwegian company. Thus return on investment from Norwegian money.
halgir··on Underwater Roundabout in the Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands were part of Norway for 800 years until about 200 years ago. Nordic territorial rivalries continue to exist as friendly banter (for now).
halgir··on AirPods Max
You're right, there's not a direct and linear increase in demand as price goes up. I concede my Veblen point.
halgir··on AirPods Max
Apple gear is, to a degree, a classic Veblen good. [1]

> Always trying to get the best for the smallest possible price starts to drain you.

So true. I've been doing this lately, and have realized how mentally draining it really is to conduct exhaustive research to maximize the value/price you get for a product. Not to mention the time spent easily runs into the hundreds of dollars worth.

For enthusiasts it can be a joy to research a product. For example audiophiles with headphones. But for average consumers like me, just going with the expensive but safe option is on average a really good heuristic.

halgir··on AirPods Max
Owning Apple gear signals status among a significant portion of the population. Maybe not for you, me or the majority of HN's clientele. But even for those who don't buy into this definition, adhering to it can still bring tactically social advantages.

I have a very hard time believing you're not aware of this, and feigning ignorance in order to criticize the fact is just disingenuous.

halgir··on Faroe Island roundabout under the Atlantic Ocean
I'm sorry, do you mean build the tunnel in an entirely different country?
halgir··on Faroe Island roundabout under the Atlantic Ocean
It's a matter of economics. Passage will be tolled [1] and this particular tunnel is projected to make economic sense based on expected traffic.

Also, there's not much interest in a bridge/tunnel connecting Strendur and Runavík. That's not what the roundabout is for. Before the roundabout was proposed, there were debates whether the tunnel should surface in Strendur or Runavík. The roundabout is to connect both Strendur and Runavík to Tórshavn without either villagers having to circle around the fjord.

The other islands you mention are sparsely populated and have a hard time justifying the cost of subsea tunnels. Populations [2]:

  • Svínoy: 31
  • Fugloy: 38
  • Kalsoy: 75
  • Nólsoy: 224
  • Mykines: 16
  • Hestur: 18
  • Stóra Dímun: 10
  • Lítla Dímun: 0

A Tórshavn roundabout even won the prestigious International Roundabout of the Year award from UK Roundabout Appreciation Society. Wish I could make this up.

You're right, found this on NCC's Norwegian website:

I don't follow local politics much, so I'm not 100% sure about the following. But my impression is that it's financed by loans, paid for with tolls for using the tunnels. And I think the project is being dug by Norwegians.

Denmark does pay a yearly subsidy to the Faroe Islands of ~105M USD to help with general upkeep, but that's not earmarked.

> Big city

Choose one. Though being serious, it takes about five minutes to drive to the hospital from any point in the capital if you have sirens going.

halgir··on Monica: Personal CRM. Remember everything about your friends, family and etc.
Like others in this thread, I tried using this some years ago. But unfortunately the friction of yet another specialized tool kept me from actively maintaining it, which of course makes it entirely worthless.

I've started just using Google Contacts for this. It syncs and integrates with all my devices, supports birthday reminders, relations and custom fields, and has a general purpose note taking area for gifts and other details.

I only wish the custom fields were more powerful/versatile and that the relations could be hyperlinked with other contacts instead of being just text fields.

Congrats, this looks really slick.

My one big worry for this is that you might have built a company around something that might as well be a single feature for someone else with an existing foothold in the industry.

For example, most larger labels use Linkfire to manage smart links, pre saves, bio links, etc. There are other companies with similar offerings. This seems like an obvious addition to a suite like that. Have you considered the defensibility of your product if your one feature is incorporated into a tool that many potential users are already familiar with and use daily?

Your intention to be industry-agnostic does partially mitigate this. Also I imagine you'd build your own suite with additional features if you get a foothold with this one.

Disclosure: I work at Linkfire, so don't reply with anything you wouldn't want a potential competitor to know.

Edit: I just realized that this actually is just one feature of a larger offering. Looks great!

I agree, but when reading book-like HTML content I miss bookmarking, highlighting and note-taking. Ideas for how to solve this? Other than personally by keeping a separate document for notes while I read.
halgir··on You've only added two lines – why did that take two days?
I know this can be nuanced, as pointed out in other replies. But as a product manager, I admit to having used this as a form of triage. People have told me they don't have time to write a proper bug report. I tell them if it's not important enough for you to spend five minutes reporting, it's not important enough for a developer to spend five hours fixing.

I of course don't respond to everything as black and white as this, and I'm not expecting them to do the kind of troubleshooting that me or a developer could do much quicker.

That's the point.
halgir··on Show HN: Planning poker online – estimate tasks without influencing others
This is great. Clean landing page, easy to get started, simple and transparent pricing. Doesn't solve an enormous problem, but scratches an itch that's just annoying enough to justify the price.

I've shared it internally, excited to see if teams decide to use it. So far we've seen everything from spreadsheets to physical cards being used.

Congrats!

halgir··on Show HN: Planning poker online – estimate tasks without influencing others
I think selling teams on the idea of planning poker is out of scope for this project. It's my impression that most devs and product people are already familiar with it, but that's just my own anecdata.

For those who know what planning poker is, the landing page is very clear.

halgir··on Santa Hat on VScode Insiders
I agree that it's unfair for the VSCode team to have to deal with trolling for trolling's sake. But I imagine many of the fake issues are a form of protest, and a protest is designed to be inconvenient for the sake of raising awareness and making your point heard.

It's like a strike. Is a coal miner's strike "fair" to consumers who are dealt power outages or price hikes? No, but the whole point is to generate inconvenience.

I sympathize with the VSCode team the same way I sympathize with front-line customer support at an airline with striking baggage handlers. But that doesn't make the strike less meritable.

In this way I think the fake reports are like any other market action used to demonstrate dismay with a certain behavior, like strikes, protests or boycotts.

There's also some amusing issues being reported in response: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3...

> Color themes are offensive to blind (and colorblind) users

> Snowflake doesn't represent people in the southern hemisphere

> Don't add "santa hat" as it's really a coca-cola's santa and I like pepsi more
