hajimemash··on If you care about privacy, it’s time to try a new web browser
This is a valid concern, it's kind of icky to open Firefox and see them pushing some company Pocket's services.

Inspired to research further, I looked and found that Mozilla acquired Pocket in 2017, and it supposedly works on your local-only data for recommendations. Pocket has a subscription plan, and Mozilla as a free software co doesn't have many revenue streams. Them needing to present their product to users doesn't seem that bad viewed in the context of needing a way to support the product. I do think it could be better presented ie explained clearly what pocket is and why they show it to us.

hajimemash··on Working at Apple (2011)
Fuck.. should have worked retail at Apple, self-studied CS and bought my own house instead of a $50k CS degree!
hajimemash··on In 1980s Los Angeles, a bank was robbed every hour (2019)
Unfortunately, pault is already in a happy and committed relationship.
hajimemash··on Microplastics found in the placentas of human fetuses
It's misleading because you're stating something false. You adamantly say the article says one thing when it ain't there.

You: 'Its described in the article itself that microplastic attracts/collects toxins (heavy metals etc.)' Article: 'Further studies need to be performed to assess if the presence of microplastics may trigger immune responses or may lead to the release of toxic contaminants'

Maybe and does is one difference. The absence of the mention of heavy metals which you state is from the article itself is another difference. I like the other stuff you said though.

hajimemash··on iPhone factory workers say they haven’t been paid, cause millions in damages
Haha when you put it like that, it helps Apple's case. They're only making less than 10x more than Costco for all the serious technical innovation vs large-scale reselling.
hajimemash··on iPhone factory workers say they haven’t been paid, cause millions in damages
WTF MAN do you always spout lies so confidently xD
hajimemash··on Startup Stock Options – Why A Good Deal Has Gone Bad (2019)
To many people who value $$$ to get other important things in their life, shares are a meaningful factor in their expected value from devoting their life to a job.

So when you say you don't work at a startup for monetary reasons, and that you don't care about shares, which has an expected value of real money despite the uncertain outcome, it's natural to wonder if you don't care about compensation aka money.

This is correct, but this is incorrect.

hajimemash··on Slack wanted to stay independent, but was unable to compete with tech giants
Yes it must be very hard for one dude, but if anyone's in a position to make even just a decent version, it should be a billion dollar company who's core product is already pretty stable..
hajimemash··on A former Uber engineer's disaster story
The emphasis could be on their behavior of 'complaining without providing much in the way of solutions'. Certainly, though obvious now, they could have empirically presented at least one legitimate case as to why Obj-C was a better choice (app size).
hajimemash··on Google Stories
Yeah, but ppl were using Mapquest for years before Gmaps came out. People were using Google before Bing came out.
hajimemash··on How I Collected a Debt from an Unscrupulous Merchant
As a non-vi user, I feel very excluded :( ^H means backspace guys. And probably the same type of CEO that wants to make money by not paying out affiliates
hajimemash··on No, DeepMind has not solved protein folding
Just because you don't understand exactly how something works, don't mean it's not useful. Someone who doesn't understand exactly how everything works, like how do bikes stay upright and how does gravity work, can still use the bike to acquire food or advance science.

I thought this was cool.
hajimemash··on Having 170 competitors in not an obstacle
Haha the copy-pasting part is terrible, but the name invoicely is vastly superior to a name that sounds like an allergic reaction or bees.
hajimemash··on So you've made a mistake and it's public
Wow can't believe that's from the start of Coronavirus outbreak, very prescient. What does this have to do with the topic though
hajimemash··on I sold Baremetrics
Very interesting to see the benefit of transparency materializing into real touchable cash.
hajimemash··on I sold Baremetrics
He worked out a win-win deal that gives them publicity and him $4M. In gaming terms, I believe this play is known as a QUAD KILL.
hajimemash··on On Apple's Piss-Poor Documentation
The n=1 sample sounds like a normal beginner that wants to buy high-end equipment for a new aspiration. Doesn't mean much. My n=1 is for unix architecture and reliability. Probably the same for many devs.
hajimemash··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 14
That sounds really cool.

I did some searching to see people's experiences substituting other languages for C++ through LLVM, and didn't find much other than samples of translated calls.

Given that there would be a big benefit to this (not having to learn a new language, less manual memory management), are there good reasons this isn't way more common?

hajimemash··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 14
How have you written backend code in Swift, were you able to use it in places you would normally use e.g. C++?

I'm asking because I like Obj-C/Swift, and am wondering if it's possible through some clang/LLVM magic to be able to code Obj-C/Swift in environments that expect C or C++, for example like in Qt. Like, could I have a traditionally C++ app (Qt app) but have most of my code be in another LLVM-compatible language.

hajimemash··on The benefits of note-taking by hand
Ever since the GTP-3 blog posts came out, every single article I read now makes me wonder- am I being fooled again into thinking a article was written by a human? Thanks u/adolos haha
hajimemash··on The benefits of note-taking by hand
Wow, for 30 years I thought cursive was a fluffy, largely-useless style technique. Didn't know it had practical uses for writing faster.
hajimemash··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
Wouldn't this amount to basically working less hours effectively? Maybe that's the real issue here- the majority of people are forced to devote 80% of their weekdays on work and chores (10hrs work+commute, 30 min lunch at work but personal time ie unpaid, 1hr dinner+relax, 30-60min misc chores = 3.5-4hrs out of 16hr day remaining).

This seems insane to me but everyone seems to put up with it
