hackworth··on Thank you Hacker News - You are all invited to Scribd's party tonight in SF
539 Bryant Street, Suite 200
hackworth··on Scribd CTO: “We Are Scrapping Flash And Betting The Company On HTML5″
you have to log in to read documents on Scribd? i've never had to.
hackworth··on Valve Leaks Teaser Images for Announcement of Steam (and Games) for Mac
i wonder what this will do to Apple's hardware lineup? If people are demanding more power from macs as game technology on the platform advances, and people can't just upgrade their video card, what will happen to the game market? Die off, or goad Apple into a mid-range mac pro?
hackworth··on Get Rid of DSL and Go Wireless
"Sponsored by Sprint!"
hackworth··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
funny, i was thinking that auto-generated tag clouds for the day's hot topics might help reduce duplicate stories, too.
hackworth··on Windows 3.1 Online - With Minesweeper
man, there was no web browser in windows 3.1. not even in windows for workgroups 3.11.
hackworth··on Myths That Can Kill a Startup
Rome, although, may just end up being a pipe dream. YMMV.

hackworth··on Television Begins a Push Into the 3rd Dimension
from the article: '“Three-D is an effort by the industry to come up with something that will motivate consumers to trade up,” said Van Baker, an analyst at Gartner Research.'

i think that's the root of it. and i suspect they will have a hell of a time trying to manufacture consumer demand to meet their supply.

hackworth··on Looks like I’m going on FoxNews today because it’s cold outside
i prefer to use "global climate change" instead of "global warming" to avoid confusing people with only a cursory understanding of how climate works.
hackworth··on You should FIRE anyone doing an "adequate" job - Netflix does
what the article doesn't state is which segment of their comapny this applies to. engineering? management? i'm going to guess not janitorial staff.
hackworth··on All style tags after the first 30 style tags are not applied in IE (4-8)
also important to note: each stylesheet cannot have more than 4095 CSS rules, in IE. experiencing this limit makes for some mighty interesting debugging.
hackworth··on Google Chrome - Linux - Can't Render Gmail
yeah, i was noticing error messages in chrome linux beta w/ gmail yesterday, too. would pop up an error dialog that said some features did not load, etc. though i could read and reply to mail just fine after i dismissed the dialog box.
hackworth··on Fewer high school students taking computer science classes
hell, the "web design" course i took in college was a joke! this was late 90's, but still, we used netscape composer for most of the work. i taught myself everything i know about web design/development today, and i've been in the industry since 2000.
hackworth··on Yelp Walks Away From Google Deal, And Half A Billion Dollars

hackworth··on Why do you use Foursquare (or Gowalla)?
i use gowalla (prettier) mostly just to kill time while i wait in line or for the bill to arrive. and to stalk my friends. not much use beyond that, to me.
hackworth··on Front end code reusability with CSS and JavaScript
not a bad tutorial, but i feel like this is more a demo of jquery's cycle plugin more than a lesson on code reusablility.
hackworth··on Posterous Makes a Play for Business Blogs
well, that is one thing that will definitely set it apart from tumblr. hopefully they can use it to carve out a good niche.
hackworth··on Ask HN: Beginning Photography
Barbara London and John Updike's "Photography" is literally the textbook most beginning photographers get in school. i'd suggest looking at used book sites to see if you can get a copy second-hand, since it is priced like a college textbook, too.
hackworth··on Ask HN: What artists do you like?
self link, but i keep a tumblelog of new artists i find around the internets: http://lowart.unstoppable.org.
hackworth··on US DoD snuffs open-source 'misconceptions'
i love how that article cites zero references. anyone interested in what the DoD actually released, see here: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10384067-16.html
hackworth··on Underscore.js: Functional Programming for jQuery
nice, all this needs is a Class object and it'd be perfect (though i guess you could just add base.js to the mix).
hackworth··on Lithium - another (new) PHP framework
site sorely needs a more prominent description of what the goals and/or philosophy of the project are, so you can tell why you might want to choose it over any other php framework.
hackworth··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
mobile stylesheet, plz!
hackworth··on Ask HN: Learning Javascript & AJAX
Jeremy Keith's "Dom Scripting" is a pretty good guide for getting up to speed with the basics of good JavaScript coding. If you want to transition to something more advanced later, I'd suggest "Pro JavaScript Design Patterns" by Dustin Diaz.
hackworth··on On Google and Python
how much does google rely on python currently for products?
hackworth··on IE6 Offenders: report companies that still require the browser.
apparently they don't do any kind of verification yet: http://twitter.com/IE6Offenders/status/3394307542

suppose you could add mozilla to the list, if you really wanted to.

hackworth··on Disqus 3 Preview
that new logo is a no-go. i would not want that on my site.
hackworth··on College Students: Pass Up That "Free" iPod
well, why do you think they call it a tax on the stupid? credit card companies don't stay in business because of prudent fiscal practices. the exist to enable your bad habits.
