hackingonempty··on Netanyahu calls Israel's war in Gaza 'opposite of genocide' in UN speech
> Invoking his late brother Yonatan Netanyahu, a commando killed in a 1976 raid to free Israeli hostages from a hijacked airliner in Entebbe, Uganda, he repeated the lines: “We are going to win. We have no other choice.”

Netanyahu doesn't just invoke his late brother, he invokes the bible saying 'Remember what Amalek did to you' (Deuteronomy 25:17) [0] 25:19, one sentence later, is 'When the Lord your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.'

hackingonempty··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
This is the Administration of Poe's Law and Order.
hackingonempty··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
The USA can't afford to waste money shipping a bunch of rocks halfway across the Solar system just so some woke geeks can speculate if Mars in the past could have supported transgender athletes.

It would jeopardize important national security projects like the White House Ballroom, the Triumphal Arch, the Garden of Heroes and National Golf Course, and of course the Donald J. Trump Center for The Performing Arts (formerly The Memorial To That Loser That Got Assassinated.)

hackingonempty··on How much oil-market buffer is left?
This years RAAM (Race Across America) winner finished in 8 days 19 hours, that's almost 350 miles per day.

Normal people no, but top ultra endurance cyclists can do 300 miles a day for two weeks straight. Especially if they are not self-supported and/or the course is not too hilly.

hackingonempty··on Dystopian Surveillance Is Becoming a Reality
Just like running your own mail server doesn't help when nearly everyone you talk to uses GMail, simply not using these devices yourself is likely not to make much difference.
hackingonempty··on Pulse: Proof-Oriented Programming in Concurrent Separation Logic (Output C/Rust)
"Pulse is a new programming language embedded in F*, inheriting many of its features (notably, it is higher order and has dependent types), but with built-in support for programming with mutable state and concurrency, with specifications and proofs in Concurrent Separation Logic."

hackingonempty··on Dramatic insider warnings over AI fall flat with some in Silicon Valley
Maybe they can use their brilliant super AI to address some real and present threats that are being ignored like nuclear annihilation, the loss of the prohibition of the acquisition of territory by force established after WWII, the certainty of all of the fossilized carbon being dug up out of the ground and released into the environment, the resurgence of measles and a poor posture for the next pandemic, ETC...
hackingonempty··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
A similar maneuver is already being used for the White House National Security Ballroom.
hackingonempty··on Instagram's head says engagement falls by half without the algorithm
> I don't get how instagram is as popular as it is.

Stockholm syndrome.

hackingonempty··on Exercise intensity is associated with cardiometabolic health
Here's a video of an amateur cyclist going all out for about a minute after spending about five minutes getting up to speed, pushing his bike to 76.11 mph.

hackingonempty··on I have a theory that software drives people insane
The Cochrane review of "physical interventions to interrupt or reduce the spread of respiratory viruses" that infamously does not find a significant effect for masking does find significant effects for hand washing.
hackingonempty··on The Invention of the MMO
This article ignores the true inventors of the MMO, Trubshaw and Bartle with MUD1 at University of Essex in 1980ish.
hackingonempty··on US to ban Canadian dairy, alcohol, motor vehicle imports on September 29
Trump wants all of the leaders of the world to kiss his ass and make a deal. Tariffs are about the only cudgel he has short of using the military.
hackingonempty··on Trusting-Trust Attack against an Entire Linux Distribution
AI could enable script kiddies to pull this off.
hackingonempty··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
Why wouldn't it? People are agreeing to indemnify and hold manufacturers harmless all the time. IANAL though.
hackingonempty··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
> They could, but running local operations isn't his forte, preference or interest, it seems. Even if he had a massive fleet of these, he'd have to navigate local laws, demand, operations and logistics.

Doesn't Tesla operate its own dealer network?

hackingonempty··on If a Tesla Cybercab fleet were profitable, Tesla wouldn't sell you one
I would be very surprised if the manufacturer would sell you one without you agreeing to indemnify them.
hackingonempty··on Adult Film Producer Unmasks Prolific 'John DOE' Torrent Pirate as Meta Executive
Downloading it and making a copy on your disk are separate potentially infringing events from copying into memory and a model.
hackingonempty··on Adult Film Producer Unmasks Prolific 'John DOE' Torrent Pirate as Meta Executive
I doubt many consumers of these videos are watching them straight through like a normal movie.
hackingonempty··on Adult Film Producer Unmasks Prolific 'John DOE' Torrent Pirate as Meta Executive
Strike 3, the studio involved, files more lawsuits in the USA than anyone else. I think that makes them the biggest Copyright Trolls of all time. They run their own BitTorrent monitoring operation.
hackingonempty··on Sanders introduces bill to ban artificial superintelligence and pause AI
In the USA, thousands of people are killed every year by car drivers. This is tolerated without a peep, relatively speaking, even though 20 times as many pedestrians are killed by drivers as are killed by mass shootings that dominate the news and voter issues.

So I predict the number of people we will tolerate being killed every year to have good AI will be more than zero, much more.

hackingonempty··on There Is No AI
This post is on Phil Wadler's blog (of haskell and monads fame) but it is entirely a 2023 quote from Jaron Lanier (of VR fame.)
hackingonempty··on Htmx 4.0
HTMX is designed for enhancing web pages, not making full apps on web platform as Elm is. They have different use cases.
hackingonempty··on Playa Phone
Brad Templeton did this 20 years ago, https://www.templetons.com/pq/build.html
hackingonempty··on Htmx 4.0
You can use ReScript with Htmx (or anything else) and get no runtime errors. It has a sound type system, great language.
hackingonempty··on Black hole singularity is a surface not a point
Physicists say a singularity is a classical prediction so most likely wrong.
hackingonempty··on A look under our trunk: what's in our compute
Road damage scales hypercubically with axle weight, so an 11 ton 2-axle bus does ~1400 times more damage to the road than a 1.8 ton Tesla.

hackingonempty··on A U.S. Strategy to Prevent the Creation of Mirror Life
Mirror life is a serious risk that could be recognized by our leaders. For example, the natural SARS-COV2 virus killed a million people in the USA alone.

Mass shootings, on the other hand, is a shocking but tiny problem that only kills about 350 people a year in the USA.

hackingonempty··on Build a Stratum 1 PTP Grandmaster on a Budget
>The key hardware fact: The CM4 uses the BCM54210PE Ethernet PHY which has full IEEE 1588v2 hardware timestamping support. This is what makes sub-microsecond PTP possible on the CM4. The BCM54210PE timestamps packets right at the wire inside the PHY, before the packet touches the kernel network stack. This eliminates the jitter that comes from kernel scheduling and interrupt handling.

Very cool feature I wasn't aware of because I'm not a true Chime Head.
