US to ban Canadian dairy, alcohol, motor vehicle imports on September 29

Why are we doing this again? The current administration established the existing trade deal back during the first term and now they are unhappy with it?

Dont shoot the messenger...

> While President Trump continues to lock in fair and reciprocal trade deals with nearly twenty trading partners across the globe, Canada continues to retaliate against the United States for its efforts to correct trade imbalances and protect American workers, farmers, and businesses.

> Over the past year and a half, only two countries have chosen to retaliate against President Trump’s tariffs rather than negotiate a deal with the United States: The People’s Republic of China and Canada.

Both countries that deserve our praise.

If only all countries could come together to embargo the USA.

Us/Canada had a nice free trade deal signed by the current prez in his first term. Pity said prez is ignoring it. Hasn’t left the agreement, just ignoring it. And nobody bothers to point that out and how he’s breaking us law to do so (ratified treaty).

In Bob Woodward's book on the first Trump presidency, Trump shows a fixation with trade deficits and trade imbalances. His cabinet would try to explain that the US having a trade imbalance with South Korea (one of the topics in the book) was expected, and he had to consider the defense and intelligence agreements as part of that. Trump would not have it – he was described as obsessively focused on the trade imbalance alone, believing it made the US look weak.

White House staff took to sneaking into the Oval Office to remove draft letters and agreements from his desk before he could sign them, so he couldn't ruin trade deals like KORUS or NAFTA over his misgivings. This time around he has obviously learned he should only have yes men in the cabinet.

I'm not sure that site is the best one to link to give a balanced explanation of the situation. The Wikipedia page on the topic seems pretty thorough and reasonable as a starting point: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tariffs_in_the_second_Trump_ad...

You'll need to cite a more reputable source

taps sign

Trump wants all of the leaders of the world to kiss his ass and make a deal. Tariffs are about the only cudgel he has short of using the military.

But make a deal on what? He literally signed the current deal we have with Canada?

That makes me think that what he really wants is either a bribe

Donald has made more money on the presidency than every president before him combined, then add an order of magnitude of wealth on top of that.

It's the Putinification of the Presidency playbook. Too big to jail.

He doesn't want a deal for the US, he wants to personally profit from it.

This. It's why "unitary executive" is so attractive - he can extend his tendrils into every nook & cranny of policy (foreign and other) to personally monetize it.

> Why are we doing this again?

Because Donald Trump is mentally ill, and it’s time we start talking about it as a Nation.

Mostly because Canada is allowing Chinese vehicle imports, which US auto industry is not happy about. There's also some pressure from US video streaming producers and distributors, after Canada expanded regulations for television and movie production into streaming video platforms.

The chinese cars was a consequence of the tariff (and other) threats, not a cause.

Pure distraction from the current administration's other gigantic ongoing failures in both national and foreign policies.

Doubling down on more failures to distract from the other failures

This needs a full-length parody of “I once knew a lady who swallowed a fly…”.

> The dairy ban covers whey protein, invert molasses, cane molasses and non-alcoholic beer, per notices on the White House's website.

I think the authors of this ban are a little confused about what dairy is.

The terms customs uses are completely unrelated to normal human words for things. They have a 21-page document (https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/202...) describing the difference between a bolt and a screw. It starts off by citing the regulation differentiating them by intended use, then spends the rest of the document differentiating them solely by looks.

"What Every Member of the Trade Community Should Know About: Distinguishing Bolts from Screws"

Is this a parody of some sort?

So this means those products will drop in price in Canada, right?

More complete article here: https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/canada...

I’m still confused about where this Canadian tequila and mescal is being made

En Winnipég y Edmontón, señor.

Do we even export any dairy to the US? I'd assume most of the auto stuff is parts not complete product, so banning that will probably just make everything more expensive for everyone.

“Dairy” is a technical term for a category of goods that is broader than milk and milk-related products.

(Yes, I know.)

Remember there's still a VERY large section of the US population fully supports this administration - tens of millions of people.

tens of millions is not large

Interesting to note that his popularity is at the lowest it's ever been though, and he appears to be losing support even among his base. What he's doing is not loved by anyone.

Canada's counter-tariffs take effect on various US goods

All Canada has to do is ban export potash to the US, that will end this crap almost instantly.

I think Canada could easily just import everything from China just to piss Trump, and take hardliner approach, it would bring trump and government to its place. But Canadian leaders are not so brave...

Carney is one of them few (if there are any) leaders of Western countries who is actually genuinely popular and has a very high approval so he does have a lot of leeway to do what he thinks is best.

Sounds interesting! Elucidate?

potash is needed for farming, in the US something like 90% comes from Canada and Canada is the largest exporter of it for the world. Stopping its export will disrupt US agriculture for quite a while and cause food prices to rise a lot.

This will make Trump stop this nonsense since we are right before the mid-terms.

Saskatchewan would demand a substitute buyer, I think. Finding cooperative middle countries is a difficult strategy.

I’ll just leave this here… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_response_to_Hurricane...

“ One of the first things Canada did was to deploy Vancouver Urban Search and Rescue to Louisiana... the team started operations on September 3; they saved 30 people that day. They were the first outside responders to arrive in St. Bernard Parish, beating American response teams.[4] By the time they returned to Vancouver on September 6, they had reportedly saved over 110 people.”

Canadians are disgusted by the way we’re being treated by the US.

This is what made a generation of Kennedy's...

Did they ban Maple syrup ?

I got a 2yr supply just in case…

Motorcycles, not motor vehicles. Lots of cars and trucks go both ways across the border. Motorcycles is a lot smaller trade, mostly done by Bombardier: those three wheeles bikes popular with seniors. Trump hates Bombardier, they had the temerity to compete with Boeing.

BRP is no longer associated with Bombardier. Although I don’t think for a second that the Trump administration isn’t incapable of that error I suspect these are actually strategically targeted.

These tariffs are counter to the Canadian tariffs on Harley and Indian if I had to guess.

Time to shut down the oil exports. That'll instantly get rid of the trade deficit that Trump keeps complaining about. That's what he wants, isn't it?

If US-ians stop cutting checks to Alberta oil companies, the trade deficit goes away. Get cracking on the cracking and get those drillers into Venezuela. I guess one can't have trade deficits with colonies, er, states?

Sakoku law, Murrica style.
