hackermeows··on GM's big bet on driverless cars turns sour
money alone can't build good tech. It's about the passion and drive of the builders, not just deep pockets. You can't just throw cash at tech problems and expect magic to happen.
hackermeows··on FCC Is Trying to Stop Discrimination in Broadband Deployment. Telecoms Are Mad
I'm currently in the process of buying a house in a major U.S. city, ideally located near a school and in the heart of the city. However, The house, despite its central location, only has access to a 4-7 Mbps max speed CenturyLink twisted pair connection, which is astonishingly slow.

My attempts to resolve this issue have led me into a frustrating loop between ISPs. When I contacted Comcast, hoping for a better service, they informed me that it was CenturyLink's territory and they couldn't provide a connection. However, when I reached out to CenturyLink, they countered by saying it was actually Comcast’s area for broadband service.

It's bewildering to me that in 2023, in a major U.S. city, there are still areas where you can't get a decent broadband internet connection. To provide some context, this area was an old red-lined district, which has recently been gentrified, partly due to the tech boom in the city. Had to give up on a perfectly good house that my partner and i loved because of this

I just lost a lot of music that had saved on apple music after switching to a new phone. There is definitely something wrong with iCloud sync
hackermeows··on Why Darwin admired the earthworm
You make an interesting point about the terms "native" and "invasive." The lines between what's considered native or foreign in nature and in demographics can be blurry, especially over long periods of time.

The earthworm story highlights how nature simply evolves, and labeling things as native or invasive can mirror some societal attitudes. These words can carry some deep biases.

Why is this better than running wireguard directly on a cheap instance .
hackermeows··on The most prolific packager for Alpine Linux is stepping away

hackermeows··on Canada’s new tech talent strategy
One of the main problems people have with this is “housing costs “, what’s causing the housing problem there. Surely its not just the immigrants that are to blame . Canada has swaths of land, it definitely does not have a space issue. It has plenty of resources (major economic driver is natural resources) , no resource issues either . What exactly is causing the housing price to stay so high compared to income .
hackermeows··on Is forced treatment for the mentally ill ever humane?
One of the primary problems with this is who gets to decide what is metal illness ? Is being gay a mental illness , I’m sure there a whole subset of the population including some doctors who thinks it is. Is being overly religious a mental illness ? There is so much potential for abuse here it just doesn’t make sense to force anything on anyone, unless they are a direct threat to others
hackermeows··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
If you are comfortable using AWS , You could us AWS Batch (free) with Spot Fargate jobs with Cloudwatch cron as the trigger . You only pay for the vcpu hours your job consumes https://aws.amazon.com/fargate/pricing/ , it’s a set it up once and forget it model.

You could use lambda if your runtime is expected to always be less than 15 minutes Batch fargate jobs documentation - https://docs.aws.amazon.com/batch/latest/userguide/fargate.h... Cloud watch cron documentation

Everything can be deployed as a simple cdk app once you have your code ready in a docker repository somewhere . There are no servers to maintain and no ongoing maintenance will be necessary

hackermeows··on What do you really get from IDE-driven development?
I’ve worked in this industry for 10 years . Without ides it would have taken another 10 years to do the things I’ve done with the help of IDEs

hackermeows··on Internet addiction and the habit of book reading
Why is it bad though . I don’t have hours to spend reading a book. Did they not say the same thing when TVs initially came out ? Seems like just another “back in the good old days” post .

hackermeows··on Mexico's Supreme Court has decriminalised the private use of cannabis by adults
I could say the same about bacon
hackermeows··on The Washington state legislature has voted to end limits on municipal broadband
I’m sure this has its negatives . I lived in Seattle and have experienced the issues with the current system first hand , when moving I looked at houses in historically redlined parts of the city , some of the houses I looked at had abysmal options for internet 7mbps was the max I was getting . There’s only two companies that provide service Centurylink and Comcast , I tired calling and visiting offices of both companies to find out if there was any chance I could get better speeds in the future , there was none , each company said these areas were under the area of the other and refused to install upgrades . I’ve also moved around a lot in the city , each place had different broadband prices from Comcast , if there were other competing services you could get 1000 mbps for 70-100 $ but if there are no other competitors in the building you are in you are paying the same 70-100 for 45 mbps speeds . These companies have stopped innovating completely and are only doing rent-seeking . Any change is better than the status quo .
hackermeows··on Nothing Can Stop Google. DuckDuckGo Is Trying Anyway
I stopped using Google due to intrusive ads, if you have someone in your family that have a chronic disease and you've ever googled it, get ready to be blasted with ads reminding of that every-time you watch youtube/browse the web. There are just some things I don't want to be reminded of Google !

hackermeows··on John Giannandrea named to Apple’s executive team
From what I've heard it is much harder at Apple to use your user data non-anonymized i.e they focus more on Privacy vs Google, Amazon etc where any team can use your data to do experiments and run A/B tests, ultimately what this means is that the quality of AI will be poorer. Developers of the $30 Google Home puck uses your data without thinking of the privacy consequences (internal bad actor), and hence is way better. This is what I've heard from developers/spokespeople of Apple. Has anyone else heard the same excuse ?
