That's rough!

Why wouldn't your kids would get your wife's citizenship in most countries? Also your (future?) wife's country probably has marriage visas and what not.

hackerman12345··on 'New Zealand wants you': the problem with tech at the edge of the world
I'd understand if it's actually something that is locally made but it's pretty annoying when a place like Brazil charges 100% markup tax on something like a video game console, video card, or what not.

It surely makes it difficult for locals to afford computers.

hackerman12345··on Ask HN: Is humanity going towards vegetarianism?
Wait until you read about how animals treat each other, and you'll pretty much think we are angels (obviously factory farms and what not are bad).

And before you say "yea but I choose to not contribute to their suffering", well what does that matter? You're still standing by while innocent creatures have all those things done to them by other creatures.

Aren't they entitled to not be tortured and slaughtered as well? Or does it just not matter if you're not the one doing it?

hackerman12345··on 'New Zealand wants you': the problem with tech at the edge of the world
Mentioning your citizenship might help, certain countries look for certain groups (e.g. they have a satellite team in ___ where you speak the language, bonus!).
hackerman12345··on Ask HN: Is humanity going towards vegetarianism?
I think the mice can usually run out of a way of a cow slowly grazing along pasture.
hackerman12345··on Ask HN: Is humanity going towards vegetarianism?
According to: https://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/sp/sp_ne153.pdf

it is not smaller. 12 mice per acre average. That's a lot more animal lives being ruined per acre IMO - and that's just the mice.

If you want to convince people of your cause, you need to be willing to be honest about the pros and cons instead of going for an emotional argument.

hackerman12345··on Ask HN: Is humanity going towards vegetarianism?
My point is that cows don't smash the field mice all day long.
hackerman12345··on Ask HN: Is humanity going towards vegetarianism?
Right, but also instead of a pasture for cows to run around and eat, you get a field with increases the amount of suffering of the little field mice and bunnies.
hackerman12345··on Ask HN: Is humanity going towards vegetarianism?
Everyone prefers grass fed cows anyway, right?
hackerman12345··on Ask HN: Is humanity going towards vegetarianism?
Emissions footprint is being improved every day - you might remember an article from a month ago discussing that giving seaweed to cows reduces their emissions by a huge amount.

If everyone went veg, we would need more farms right? How many more field mice/rabbits/snakes/whatever will suffer/get squashed from this? Is this number comparable to the amount of cows that suffer for steak? It seems like smaller creatures treatment never get considered.

It's not just marketing in that graph, it's sales & marketing. Insurance companies don't make getting drugs covered and to patients easy. Newly created drugs are pretty useless if neither doctor nor patient has heard of them.

hackerman12345··on University of Chicago to stop requiring ACT and SAT scores
I'm suggesting the whole reason behind this "better admission system" is because they want to reduce the amount of Asians there. If you keep changing the rules for admission, you'll eventually find one which xyz undesired demographic can't compete in as well.

It's not the first time they've been discriminated against.

hackerman12345··on University of Chicago to stop requiring ACT and SAT scores
ACT spokesman has a good point. I think the university will find this will lead to a reduced graduation rate, and less seats available for students who have a high probability of making it through the program.

As of 2016, the school recorded 43% of the new undergraduate class being white - already far below the national demographics. The only over represented group is Asians at 18%. This plan seems born of the usual trend in the past few years, with the goal of reducing Asian membership.

Heat isn't wasted if you live somewhere you need to heat your house anyway. Many people turn energy -> heat without any 'useful' byproduct in between. Imagine if instead they got free bitcoin or cancer research or server hosting in the middle - there's actually a company that is already working on that - putting servers in people's houses to heat them.

But anyway, it also produces a unique currency system with many benefits.

hackerman12345··on I wrote a negative Yelp review and it made my life a nightmare
Do you realize that Obamacare is based on throwing more money at insurers - and furthermore wanted to legally require that every American throw a share of money at a for-profit insurer?

Is everyone against that really a "person that hates others so much"?

hackerman12345··on I wrote a negative Yelp review and it made my life a nightmare
How can you claim to understand them when you're posting their oppositions propaganda instead of their own arguments? That's like starting a conversation by referring to a pro-choicer as a pro-death... even if you have great arguments against the choice of abortion it's not going to lead to a productive conversation.

As a sibling poster to you said, the ridiculous pricing is part of a game between insurers and care providers. Throwing more money at insurers might not be the ideal answer.
