hackbinary··on Ask HN: Are Lucene/Solr/ES Still Used for Search?
We have on prem Coveo, which is based on ES. It is/they are horrible. We pay a large amount in Enterprise support and maintenance, and it is next to nonexistent.

Thankfully we are moving to Azure Cloud Search services, which just work, over the next year.

Good bye manure pile, hello compost.

hackbinary··on The Last POWER1 CPU on Mars Is Dead
I thought a second was a SI base unit: (from Wikipedia)

The second, symbol s, is the SI unit of time. It is defined by taking the fixed numerical value of the caesium frequency {\displaystyle \Delta \nu _{\text{Cs}}} {\displaystyle \Delta \nu _{\text{Cs}}}, the unperturbed ground-state hyperfine transition frequency of the caesium-133 atom, to be 9192631770 when expressed in the unit Hz, which is equal to s−1.

hackbinary··on Canada's forests emit more carbon than they absorb
I'm not sure what the author is playing at, but I think at the very least he is trying to be a bit clever.

His argument is based upon that forest biomass is shrinking and therefore forest are causing CO2 emissions:

"When you add up both the absorption and emission, Canada's forests haven't been a net carbon sink since 2001. Due largely to forest fires and insect infestations, the trees have actually added to our country's greenhouse gas emissions for each of the past 15 years on record."

Forest only reduce CO2 when they photosynthesising, so if the forests are being killed by fire or insects, then the forests are not ingesting CO2 but are expelling.

They way this article is titled leads one to believe that forests are causing the problem and that it is implicitly okay to be reducing forest biomass. I think the title is misleading and disingenuous.

Seems to me that "#include <gtk/gtk.h>" means that gnome-shell does use gtk. Or maybe I am missing some nuance of your statement.

MS Exchange on-prem does not include an anti-spam solution. You have to buy one like Symantec security cloud or MS Exchange online security. Exchange is not a 'hosted' solution.

Gmail by contrast is only a hosted/cloud solution, and comes with a security solution as part of the service.

I can compare Symantec Security Cloud sitting in front of an Exchange solution to a Gmail solution, and say that hands down Gmail is far and away better with exactly zero phishing emails making it through compared to numerous attacks able to get through Symantec Security Cloud to our Exchange users.

Comparing Exchange to Gmail is like comparing kwiwis to radishes, in my view.

hackbinary··on Subscription Hell
Honestly, the subscription model is more honest than a one time purchase pyramid scheme. Software changes over time. It has to, new operating systems, libraries and hardware dictate forward maintenance costs, nevermind bugs and security flaws.
hackbinary··on EU agrees on total ban of bee-harming pesticides
>> I must admit I find the EU pretty progressive and thought-leading lately - ironically using the tool progressives despise the most: Regulation.

Who said it is necessary for 'progressives' hate regulation? Progressiveness, I think, is a contextual thing. Capitalism, free-marketism, socialism, theocracism, and indeed any political and social movement can all advocate progressivism toward their own ideologies.

So, in my view, progressivism has more to with general change to an idealogical view, whatever that idealogical view is, and not got anything to do with change to a certain idealogical view. As in one person may view a change being progressive, eg reduction in regulation, and another might view that change as being regressive, eg removal of regulation of toxic chemicals into a river system.

hackbinary··on Electric Buses Are Hurting the Oil Industry
Thank you all for the thoughtful replies and it seems to me that moving to electric transport is the way forward.

I would like to point out that the article in the main was about China, where they are building out significant coal capacity. However it does seem that on balance it does seem the right thing to travel to trade bus diesel engines for static coal generation.

hackbinary··on Electric Buses Are Hurting the Oil Industry
Okay, cool. But the energy still has to be produced somehow. Are we shifting the diesel to coal power plants? So for every km driven, what is the comparative amount of CO2 produced? Is there a net benefit in this regard? Coal power plants might be more efficient, but then we are shifting the smoke stacks.

Then what about the batteries? The batteries need to be produced, and they have a useful lifespan, then need to be disposed of or recycled. How do we deal with all of that contamination?

Are we further ahead with electric cars and buses?

I went to the Volvo museum last year and learned that pneumatic tires consume something like 30% of the energy expended by road vehicles, should we not be focusing on better rail transport? Or solid tire technology?

I had a quick look over their pricing plans, and they actually seem pretty fair to me. $48 per year to store all of your photos on the basic paid tier, and all the other tiers seemed aimed at people that are either enthusiasts or professionals, eg people who want to have their own domain.

The old adage of "you kind of get what you pay for" seems to apply.
