hackbinary··on Fixing Scrum (2019)
Honestly, Project/Product/Program staff, BAs, and Testers perform an important function when properly aligned and cooperating with development staff. When done well, they keep pesky 'business side's owners out of the way so the technical workers can get on with development work.

Not Kingpin?

;)

hackbinary··on Ask HN: How do you manage your financials?
It depends on which index. The Dow Jones is an exceeding poor index and a good actively managed fund will out perform it easily.

The Dow does not take into account market cap or float, and when a security comes off of it at $5 a share and a new one goes in at $105 per share, then the index jumps $100 in value.

The S&P is better, but managed funds are usually better.

hackbinary··on Volkswagen exec admits full self-driving cars 'may never happen'
Congestion is not just caused by reaching capacity. It is also caused by human behaviour:

- selfishness eg stopping or parking in no parking zones, driving aggressively

- error eg causing accidents

- ignorance eg not knowing the traffic flow in an intersection, driving slowly to find your bearings.

Also, if we have fewer cars, but higher utilisation of vehicles then we will require less parking.

hackbinary··on Mercurial’s journey to and reflections on Python 3
I disagree. If someone else wants to continue to develop Python 2 outside the Python foundation and formalised development community, then that is their prerogative, but Python has the right to decide what is and is not Python.

Dilution of what is commonly accepted to be Python would not be a good thing, and would further add to confusion.

I know that platform upgrades are painful, but we need to move with the times or we'll all be mired in technical debt and old technology.

Yes, it is called Windows Defender, as above.

This just lends more evidence to the view that the system is rigged.
hackbinary··on OpenWRT will natively support NextDNS in upcoming 19.07.0 release
dd-wrt had a better web interface in the early days, and they took copies the OpenWrt kernel in 2005.

It used to be that dd-wrt was less open than openwrt, but worked better. I think now, though, openwrt has surpassed dd-wrt.

hackbinary··on Telling Whiskey from Whisky
Many distilleries are now owned by Japanese. Eg, the Bowmore.
hackbinary··on Telling Whiskey from Whisky
Bagpipes are amongst one of the oldest instruments, and originated in central Asia.

Also, Japanese whisky is amazing.

hackbinary··on Show HN: ALL_CAPS => sudo all_caps (Bash)

ctrl-a (readline command for beginning of line)

type "sudo"

Also, ctrl-w is really useful. Heck, learning the readline editing keyboard in general is really useful.

hackbinary··on ‘This Did Not Go Well’: Inside PG&E’s Blackout Control Room
Decisions about investments and what to do with profits come immediately to mind.

It is not like you have had a market choice to decide to payout dividends to shareholders or to maintain transmission lines.

Natural monopolies should not be private.
hackbinary··on D-Link Home Routers Open to Remote Takeover Will Remain Unpatched
>> If a car spontaneously

This is false equivalence. A car is not $/£/E/50 piece of hardware.

hackbinary··on D-Link Home Routers Open to Remote Takeover Will Remain Unpatched
What do you expect from companies that sell kit at $50/£50/€50?

You always kind of get what you pay for. If you pay an annual maintenance, then you can expect regular and secure updates, otherwise you are buying the product as is at time of purchase.

Then again, I buy stuff that can be flashed with OpenWRT ...

hackbinary··on Most Canadians Are Now Better Off Than Most Americans
Because of government cutbacks on public spending and erosion of the 'welfare' state.

Public policy and investment in housing for ordinary people while allowing the mega elite to extract as much wealth for themselves. The non-elite then use debt to maintain their standards of living.

hackbinary··on How to Make Billions of Dollars Reducing Loneliness
Start dancing. I started swing and jazz dancing a couple of years ago. The community is awesome, and you get to meet loads of people. There are regular events all over the world.
hackbinary··on Hiring Is Broken?
Probably. Everything else seems to broken as well, housing, education, healthcare, justice, and politics. So it seems perfectly rational to think that hiring is broken as well.
hackbinary··on Alcohol Belts of Europe
Well, whoever wrote this doesn't know about whisky in Scotland. :D
hackbinary··on Most Canadians Are Now Better Off Than Most Americans
Well spotted. And that is mostly due to Harper and the Conservatives giving huge tax breaks to the very wealthy, and the super ridiculously wealthy.

hackbinary··on Regex for Noobs – An Illustrated Guide
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that from personal and anecdotal experience I got 97% in a first year calculus course. I went in with a marginally good algebra result, but I resolved to learn the shit out of everything that came my way.

I systemised as much as I could, but there was a lot of write practice when it came to learning trigonomic idendities and transidnetal functions. And not just the normal ones; I mean all of them ... both the inverserse and hyperbolic identities.

I did all of the problems and got extra ones.

In short, I knew the material backwards and forwards; I finished hour long exams in 20 minutes, and was usually the first or second person to leave.

What I am trying to say is that REGEX is similar to calculas and in my view requires significant focus and practice to master. Or you can muddle your way through it when you have to.

hackbinary··on LA getting serious about lifting parking requirements in downtown
I am guessing that you are aligned political to the ideological view of the smallest possible government and regulations.

Unfortunately, developers and property owners will care nothing for the wider community. Firstly, at what point would you end regulations? Perhaps zoning and planning permission frameworks are too much? Let the market decide. Electrical, again that really is too much regulation, and we should let the free mark reign as people will have to adhere keep up their personal reputation.

The unfortunate fact is that personal reputation does not count for shit. Just look at Trump and Johnson. They outright lie and nobody is holding them to account, so what makes you believe that shonky developers and property sales people will hold to their word.

Secondly, our road systems and other community infrastructure can only accommodate and scale with so much growth. If growth is not managed reasonably, then our communities will become truly awful places to live.

I would agree that where population density is lower, then there needs to be less regulation, and where it is higher there needs to be more.

Finally, I would add that that charging 5p for disposable plastic shopping bags has had a hugely positive effect on curtailing the use of single use plastic bags.

Sometimes there is too much regulation, and sometimes there is too little, but fundamentally we need regulation, and participatory democrat systems to manage it.

Your quality of your life and ownership should not be obliterated overnight because somebody bought the neighbouring property and decided to build an industrial composting facility.

hackbinary··on Regex for Noobs – An Illustrated Guide
Practice, my friend. You might have developed a systematic methodology for quickly learning and internalising (many) other things. (Kudos.) But sometimes it just comes down to wrote practice and repetition; time and effort might be key here for your mastery of this subject.
hackbinary··on New bill would ban autoplay videos and endless scrolling
I thought I was going insane with all these videos auto playing in Facebook and Twitter. It truly is annoying.

I'm not sure if I am against endless scrolling, however. I would, though, accept the loss of endless scrolling if that would stop videos from auto playing.
