hackandtrip··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for a coding interview in a week?
The profit you can generate for the company depends on your likeliness to solve problems in an efficient way, and to learn how to solve problems in new efficient ways.

Company knows how the interview prep is, and the candidate that understand more how to solve non-trivial problems can be the right service provider for that company.

I'm not talking by experience but what I was taught, I'm currently finishing my university but the Data Structure and Algorithm course is one of the most difficult to pass and that's only basic structure. A candidate able to think fastly about dynamic programming or structure a possible solution for a NP-complete problem can provide a service that others candidate can't.

hackandtrip··on Ask HN: What is your favorite gym motivation video?
OT: I know you said you aren't a huge Dorian fan, but this Podcast [0] from Joe Regan is really awesome. He managed to be the first beast of his kind, and to get back in a normal shape to have an (almost) normal life ahead. He knew the price and managed it well, in a sort of Cutler way.

hackandtrip··on Ask HN: What is your favorite gym motivation video?
I'm really interested in this topic like others HN-er, seeing the variety of content, would be interested to understand why it's flagged: gym is a stress-reliever and others huge health benefits.

For me, it depends on the day: Ronnie squat (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVVdlwf1iyM)

Eddie Hall Deadlift (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4AQlamvFzs)

If lacking the motivation to DO usually Kay Greene works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jVQnoQ1S6U

Something more fitness-y , like Steve cook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNsc5GIUPIY

And if I want something more different, I check the last video from NickVisionMotivation, awesome videos!

hackandtrip··on Baidu's CEO Declares He Can Beat Google Again
That's the first time I read something like that, no sources on google seems to pop-up, nothing on "mobs china foreign countries". It's obvious that China's biggest companies are tied to government, but I would be surprised if this didn't make to the news.
hackandtrip··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
I'd say that those were crazy things, but not too much. AI understood that teamfight were impossibile to win, and so the really weird choices (sven dying for the tower lol) . I'd say that matches with such lineup are not too much and so they didn't really know, but they did an awesome job and kept things balanced for so long
hackandtrip··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
Chat deciding heroes can be so cool! We may see new strategy, AI out of the safe lane confidence!!
hackandtrip··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
It would be really interesting to see what bots will do once humans will try to exploit this strategy, like adapting to the lane movement they always do after winning a lane etc, humans did that once today but it may be used better. Excited for the TI to see less limitation, a better shop system (lot of money throw away) and maybe better ward.

Reaction times are limited to 200ms; it's all about the meta and the group tactics, and bot are apparently really good at it.

Exporting democracy with bombs has not worked well so far, I guess (or hope) governments learnt that. Terrible mistakes has been made, justifying war at all cost to satisfy people for election, or other wrong motivations.

You can't just destroy a regime, replace that with another democratic one and expect that a State of peace will grow. This just doesn't work. People from different areas of the world are used to different way of dealing with power, for cultural and religion issues. This is especially true with stabilizing an extremist Muslim regime. You need to cut their extreme belief, destroy their motivation, give them other chances. Examples: Gaza, Paris and its suburbs, etc.

Most of the time, in those contexts, war doesn't resolve anything.

hackandtrip··on A used voting machine from the 2016 election
It's not about the technical problem, it's about the perception from people of an electronic vote. People that didn't grew up in the tech revolution are going to be skeptical anyway, and I'm not sure about the ones that are full of social induces doubts about everything. It seems to me we are trying to solve a non existant problem

hackandtrip··on Urine, Not Chlorine, Causes Red Eyes in Pools (2015)
There are a variety of reasons why it's considered best practice to make people have a shower before entering the pool. They already explained it, talking about elderly people / etc. If it's sunny and you are out of the water from three hours tanning, your heart adjust to a certain frequency. If you jump in with any prior advice to your body into the water, heart has to adjust to a much different frequency, and an heart attack is possible.

The problem here is that a lot of people doesn't know what's going on with their hearth and certainly a lifeguard doesn't know about.

Also, adding to that, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_shock_response

I don't know about Sweden situation, but it seems really weird that no lifeguard was there. In Italy every public or private place with a pool needs a number of lifeguards according to the number of people of the pool / the pool's dimension. It's really easy to have some heart attack or hypoxia going unnoticed, example: X person jump in, simply doesn't get up. Also, time is key, if an heart attack occurs a close defribillator with someone able to use that / a lifeguard able to transport that person out of the pool without damages (it's not that easy as it sounds) can be really important. Drowning situations are even more dangerous, a drowning person can have a force in their arms able to do real damage and everything needs to be deal in the safest way.

hackandtrip··on Urine, Not Chlorine, Causes Red Eyes in Pools (2015)
I don't know about the Poland situation, but the main problem in Italian (I guess other lifeguard certs too) it's the lack of any required refresher course. Things are changing fast on first aid practices best practice and a lot of people are behind.

Personal example: I'm 20, I am a certified lifeguard (I did the training because I was a competitive swimmer), no experience but I could extend my certificate till I am 65 year old, in whatever physique condition with whatever knowledge of best practice. That's just plain wrong, and I know that a lot of States work in a really different way with refresher courses and such, making pools and sea a safer place.

hackandtrip··on Urine, Not Chlorine, Causes Red Eyes in Pools (2015)
Slightly off topic, but you should shower to avoid temperature difference too, specially in hot days. I don't know about the lifeguard situation in USA, in Italy it's pretty terrible; it should be absolutely required to have a shower before jumping in the water.

hackandtrip··on Having Alzheimer’s at 38 (2015)
Research is making really big step, we all hope for a cure of this and other plague that are ruining our lives.

I often ask myself if the nature of the disease itself make it even worse: AIDS was the worst in its age, people went in streets asking for a cure, now we made huge steps, the same it's happening with cancer, but Alz make everything different: the sick can't make his voice heard, he has no knowledge of what's happening, family, with an enormous economic sacrifice, try to take care of the sick, and their voices become silent.

I'm seeing this for the second time in my family and I can say that I can fully understand who rely in special clinics - Switzerland is famous for this - to stop their life once the disease make them not self-sufficient. A nice view of this situation is given by "Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die".

hackandtrip··on Cloud9Trader – Simple, powerful platform for algorithmic trading
How is the correlation between "epitome of a meritocracy" and "higly skeptical of a degree"? Is that for it being an evolving field?
hackandtrip··on Sex and Sexuality
Yes, usually people writes about the "homosexuality" in the Greece for example, but that's a completely different view: old philosophers used to have their own young boy that gave their body in exchange of intellectual knowledge. Platone express a completely different view (we won't never know how much the Aristophanes speech was Platone's, and viceversa), without judging.
hackandtrip··on Cloud9Trader – Simple, powerful platform for algorithmic trading
Another question to who does algorithmic trading, is a software / engineering education with a strong math and data analysis useful to get into that? Do you have some particular resource where someone can start to approach it?
hackandtrip··on Sex and Sexuality
Talking about Plato and his idea of sexuality and love, the Symposium[0] is worth a read. Aristophanes speech in particular is, in my personal opinion, one of the best thing ever written in this context.

hackandtrip··on Notes on Discrete Mathematics (2017) [pdf]
Well, there are books on subjects that are widely used in different countries, Sheldon&Ross for probability, Cormen for Algorithms, etc; Usually a professor choose his own way to teach things, with different example using maybe his own experience in the field, putting more focus into certain things, and students can just do better with a (usually free) reference of what is done in a particular class

We can argue if this method, where not every class on the same subject is equal, is good or bad, but till this is what is widely used, it's good for both students and professor to have a reference.

hackandtrip··on Ask HN: What are some great books that are relatively unknown in the US?
Candide by Voltairre , really short drama, funny with a really unique point of view of pestilence. Confessions by Rousseau, superb biography of an amazing life. Zeno's conscience, a psycho analysts novel with a different point of view.
