habeebtc··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
I make a habit of responding to each and every recruiter.

The ones who send me jobs I am way overqualified for, or simply don't pay enough, I tell them my current compensation package with the advice to send relevant offers in the future.

Realistically though, every external recruiter I have talked to since I got into my current big tech company has been a waste of time. They can't usually touch my comp package, and only the other big tech companies are likely to be able to (or internal recruiters).

habeebtc··on Sony to buy video game maker Bungie in $3.6B deal
To actually finish all the content in each D2 expansion you have to invest full time job kind of time in it.

Destiny doesn't just feel like a job, in some sense it IS a job.

I thought they did a good job rehabilitating the first game from the sorry shape it shipped in (see: the economics of the loot cave). It is a mountain which can be climbed, and it is fun to do so. (There is also a literal mountain to climb)

habeebtc··on Ask HN: Where do you hang out virtually online?
I quite like BoingBoing bbs.

You will find a mix of knowledgable on a very wide variety of topics discussing current events. Many techies, but also doctors, lawyers, engineers, professors, etc.

habeebtc··on Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life
If you are only meeting lonely programmer types at dance lessons, you should pick something more social.

Book clubs. Films clubs. Run clubs. Hell, take up fishing and go to meetups (super social sport, believe it or not).

There are many varied ways to connect with other people. If it is a romantic partner you want to meet and you are a straight man, skip fishing meet ups and replace that recommendation with Yoga or Zumba.

My point is that congresspeople are unlikely to legislate their lunch money.

As well, there is an angle about the fiscal health or the middle class as well. Depending on how much you think the average congressperson feels about them.

habeebtc··on Citizen developers are rapidly becoming the vanguard of corporate digitisation
I am old enough to recall RAD, and young enough to have seen a few of these low/no code solutions come and go.

Don't get me wrong. I love them as a coder. Once I get the hang of them, I can bang out powerful stuff in a few minutes.

The problem is (IMO) to get to that level, you have to already be a coder to some extent. I strongly suspect this stated success story had a ton of upskilling help from MSFT, if not hand-holding.

I would not bet on a non-coder coming fresh to these platforms and building something useful with no other context. In their current state they are likely to be (very powerful) lazy programmer tools.

Until there is some paradigm shift I do not see the "Citizen Developer" becoming a practical reality. A field tech who crimps ethernet all day is going to have to learn some programmer skills to make a power app that pulls data from an API, parses the JSON and then does something useful with it.

habeebtc··on Right to Repair Fight
The big problem with regulating big tech is you are punching yourself in the pocketbook.

Even if congressmen are not trading on inside info and getting rich, if you have a 401k you are gonna get dinged in net worth by this kind of regulation. On AAPL especially.

habeebtc··on 'Dutch reach' rule change to Highway Code welcomed
This is a great commonsense idea which is likely to have a positive impact.

However, given the array of things which have been termed "Dutch" in English, does "Dutch Reach" sound naughty to anyone else?

habeebtc··on I won the local election, but my township ignored the results and state law
Indeed. The methods mentioned make it quite clear that we do not know how bad it really is very corrupt countries.
habeebtc··on The computer built to last 50 years (2021)
> The machine will be built to communicate in written format. It means writing and reading. That covers already a lot of use cases. Writing documents. Writing emails. Reading mails, documents, ebooks. Searching on the network for information. Reading blogs and newsletters and newsgroups.

Really, this is most of what I use my phone for. Even the sites I read voraciously are mostly text (where I can get it anyways). Except the occasional streaming during some bored moments, my smartphone experience would be improved by less images and video.

habeebtc··on Ask HN: Is the past disappearing on the web?
I see some articles which always have a "last updated" of today. You can refresh a day later and watch it change.
habeebtc··on Get ahead by not shooting yourself in the foot
Incredibly scary, and on point. Definitely describes how I have moved around jobs.

It's articles like this that make me realize how fortunate I am to work in Tech, which has a really low unemployment rate. It's pretty easy to get a job that pays the bills (if your bills are reasonable) - it's more difficult to get one which is higher than your last one.

habeebtc··on Is old music killing new music?
I can't disagree here about some really good music using Autotune. Even if it is not your cup of tea, Cher's "Believe" is undeniably iconic.

I am not a record producer, but I feel like Autotune is a big part of the reason that we don't have many modern classics. I would love some producers' hot takes on this article.

habeebtc··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
I use Azure Logic Apps to pay attention to things I should be paying attention to, and then send emails or take other actions when something happens which needs attention.

Some of my colleagues think I never sleep. I think partly because I do work very hard, and long hours at times (just not all the time). However, I make no secret that a lot of these emails are coming from, essentially, simple bots. Some definitely have a mistaken impression about how much I actually work.

habeebtc··on Is old music killing new music?
What you think of as Autotune from your examples was popularized by Cher (turning it up all the way to produce that effect).

Used sparingly it can turn people with terrible pitch into reasonably good singers. Turned up a bit more gets you a pristine sound, which sometimes pops pleasantly but often enough ends up bland and less memorable. You may have to have an ear for music a bit to notice it.

Once you notice it, it is everywhere.

habeebtc··on I Spent Hundreds of Hours Working in VR
> Has anyone actually worked this way?

I tried with the Samsung Odyssey+ a few times. I used the counterbalance and extra support kit (it is a bit heavy), and it's quite nice with those. Still some pressure on my nose bridge, so have a bit of adjustment to do. Touch typing takes a bit of getting used to, but it works well enough. I already am using a trackball 100% of the time (I know, I'm a monster), so I don't have to worry about knocking stuff over with my mouse.

The real problem is that since I have a WMR headset, none of the really good virtual desktop softwares people use are available. The ones that are, aren't that great, for various reasons.

Then there's the issue that my laptop is a surface book 2. Powerful enough to run VR smoothly, but while the system fan is blasting at full volume the whole time. Also it seems to slowly drain the battery. So it's really not an all day affair regardless of usability.

I don't want to use my gaming PC (which is more than up to the task), because then I have to basically let my company own it, in order to meet the security policy requirements. I'm concerned if I do that, that I'll never really get all the bits off again short of a reimage. I haven't ruled out buying a dedicated HDD to swap out (I have a hot swap bay).

Some 360 games shipped with console updates as well. Required to be applied before you could play the game.

The alternative here is to buy a waterproof tablet, and a decent mount to attach it to your treadmill.

habeebtc··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
Indeed the Steam Deck is very exciting because what we've seen is that the mobile space is where Linux has been able to defeat Microsoft in end user adoption.

As some other folks have pointed out, the existence of WINE and other compat layers is actually hindering gaming on Linux, by disincentivizing game devs to make games directly for linux. A huge hit with the Steam Deck could actually start bringing more games directly to Linux.

habeebtc··on Teaching how to code is broken
My inclusion of them on the list is from just 2 data points:

Those sorts of classes were available when I was in school, but it was not a whole track, it was 1 class each.

Second data point: These are the types of roles I meet in the wild who would benefit from coding, and they usually cannot (or can do some very light scripting).

I cannot explain it exactly. They just usually are missing that skill.

habeebtc··on Teaching how to code is broken
When I was in school (it's been a while), we built super boring things that nobody cared about as our assignments. Various inventory systems, which you have to sort/search.

That was a big challenge of mine in school. I wasn't that interested in the assignments, because I was building boring stuff that didn't really solve problems, let alone ones I cared about.

I am pretty prolific in my career, and I'm not even what you would call a hardcore dev. Which brings me to my next gripe with CS curriculum: It is geared towards training hardcore devs and not any other type of engineer.

The types of coders we should have some sort of curriculum for, which we to this day mostly do not:

-SRE's -Ops people -Support people -PM's -Accountants/General finance -DBA's -SysAdmins -Network engineers -Cloud engineers

habeebtc··on Music industry is suing youtube-dl hosters
There was a meme a while back (which was completely accurate), about how the minimum sentence for uploading a Michael Jackson album was less than the sentence the doctor got for literally killing Michael Jackson.
habeebtc··on Music industry is suing youtube-dl hosters
Indeed. I don't think most xxx streamers (or streaming platforms) are "stones" with enough "blood" for them to be worth squeezing.
habeebtc··on Music industry is suing youtube-dl hosters
I was also surprised at this. Despite all the copyright claim controls, I was under the impression that YT was still the biggest source unauthorized music distribution.

This seems to me to be akin to bullying a mouse because bullying the elephant in the room isn't going to pan out.

habeebtc··on Ask HN: Do you have to use LinkedIn to get hired?
I've gotten hired twice via a linkedin "Stumble Upon" type process, but not used it to apply for a job (successfully, anyways). I typically have done that with the recruiter or company directly.

I don't switch jobs that often. My career has been at only 4 companies over 20 years so far.

I agree with other comments here, your LinkedIn profile is useful for showing people what you're about and what you can do at a high level. I know people who don't have linkedin because they are in-person networkers. They go to conferences to build relationships, and when they need a new job they work that social network that they built into their "little black book" by hand.

habeebtc··on Cryptoland [video]
Some people cannot conceive of the thing falling apart and everyone dying of hunger and thirst.

It is rather less tropical but Put In Bay fits the bill much better.

habeebtc··on The Rise of Performative Work
I have been arguing with people on Blind about this. Not actually fraud!

However, you are likely in violation of employment contract. Where I currently work, and my previous job, you could actually find a way through the official channels by just not being totally accurate about the other job(s).

If challenged it comes down to the details. Moonlighting is a perfectly normal activity for driven people (I did tech blogging for a previous employer once while employed by someone else, so I have navigated this system at one company), and by structuring your disclosures very strategically you could likely avoid any legal impacts.

All that said, working multiple jobs like that will definitely get you fired if you are found out. Even in a state with strong worker protections.

And again, all that said: Don't do this.

I can appreciate the performance aspect of your perspective here. But, if it takes up way too much screen real estate, it matters. If I spend extra time navigating a bad UI, it matters.
